A Finite-Element Simulation of Pulsatile Flow in Flexible Obstructed Tubes

A finite-element model for pulsatile flow in a straight flexible partially obstructed tube is developed. In the unobstructed sections of the tube the model considers the continuity equation, the one-dimensional momentum equation, and an equation of state relating tube cross-sectional area to pressure. For the obstructed region, a nonlinear relationship between the flow and the pressure drop across the stenosis is considered. The applicability of a model is checked by comparing predicted flow and pressure waveforms with corresponding in-vitro experimental measurements obtained on a mechanical system. These comparisons indicate that the model satisfactorily predicts pressures and flows under variety of frequencies of oscillation and stenosis severities.

This paper for the first time attempts to establish the biomechanical characteristics of bovine skin via experiment-theory integration and finite element simulation. 30 specimens prepared from fresh slaughtered bovine were uniaxially stretched in-vitro using tensile tests machine. The experimental raw data are then input into a Matlab programme, which quantified the hyperelastic parameters based on Ogden constitutive equation. It is found that the Ogden coefficient and exponent for bovine skin are μ = 0.017 MPa and α = 11.049 respectively. For comparison of results, the quantified Ogden parameters are then input into a simple but robust finite element model, which is developed to replicate the experimental setup and simulate the deformation of the bovine skin. Results from experiment-theory integration and finite element simulation are compared. It is found that the stress-stretch curves are close to one another. The results and finding prove that the current study is significant and has contributed to knowledge enhancement about the deformation behaviour of bovine skin.

The one-dimensional (1-D) equations of blood flow consist of the conservation of mass equation, balance of momentum equation and a wall constitutive equation with arterial flow rate, cross-sectional area and pressure as the variables. 1-D models of blood flow enable the solution of large networks of blood vessels including wall deformability. Their level of detail is appropriate for applications such as modeling flow and pressure waves in surgical planning and their computational cost is low compared to three-dimensional simulations.

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture is responsible for the majority of myocardial infarctions and acute coronary syndromes. Rupture is initiated by mechanical failure of the plaque cap, and thus study of the deformation of the plaque in the artery can elucidate the events that lead to myocardial infarction. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) provides high resolution in vitro and in vivo cross-sectional images of blood vessels. To extract the deformation field from sequences of IVUS images, a registration process must be performed to correlate material points between image pairs. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of an image registration technique termed Warping to determine strains in plaques and coronary arteries from paired IVUS images representing two different states of deformation. The Warping technique uses pointwise differences in pixel intensities between image pairs to generate a distributed body force that acts to deform a finite element model. The strain distribution estimated by image-based Warping showed excellent agreement with a known forward finite element solution, representing the gold standard, from which the displaced image was created. The Warping technique had a low sensitivity to changes in material parameters or material model and had a low dependency on the noise present in the images. The Warping analysis was also able to produce accurate strain distributions when the constitutive model used for the Warping analysis and the forward analysis was different. The results of this study demonstrate that Warping in conjunction with in vivo IVUS imaging will determine the change in the strain distribution resulting from physiological loading and may be useful as a diagnostic tool for predicting the likelihood of plaque rupture through the determination of the relative stiffness of the plaque constituents.

Diabetes mellitus induces a variety of neuropathies and causes various symptoms. Understanding how diabetes affects mechanical properties of nerves is useful for preventing complications of diabetes mellitus such as the carpal tunnel syndrome. In a previous study, a two-dimensional hyper-viscoelastic finite element model (FEM) of the ultra-structures of normal rat sciatic nerves was developed using an optical coherence tomography (OCT) microscope and in vitro parallel compression tests. The main goal of this study was to extend the FEM from two to three dimensions and use it to explore hyper-viscoelasticity of ultra-structures of sciatic nerves of diabetic rats. A modification of the compression testing system to enhance OCT cross-sectional images of the nerve samples was also conducted. The results showed that the instantaneous shear moduli of the perineurium, epineurium, and endoneurium of the diabetic rat were all greater than those of the normal rats. Due to high instantaneous shear moduli and low percentage of relaxation, the diabetic nerve is prone to damage when subjected to prolonged mechanical loads.

Abstract A finite element model was developed to simulate the tire-rim interface. Elastomers were modeled by nonlinear incompressible elements, whereas plies were simulated by cord-rubber composite elements. Gap elements were used to simulate the opening between tire and rim at zero inflation pressure. This opening closed when the inflation pressure was increased gradually. The predicted distribution of contact pressure at the tire-rim interface agreed very well with the available experimental measurements. Several variations of the tire-rim interference fit were analyzed.

The aim of this paper is to design and fabricate a star die and a cylindrical die to produce a star shape by redrawing the cylindrical shape and comparing it to the conventional method of producing a star cup drawn from the circular blank sheet using experimental (EXP) and finite element simulation (FES). The redrawing and drawing process was done to produce a star cup with the dimension of (41.5 × 34.69mm), and (30 mm). The finite element model is performed via mechanical APDL ANSYS18.0 to modulate the redrawing and drawing operation. The results of finite element analysis were compared with the experimental results and it is found that the maximum punch force (39.12KN) recorded with the production of a star shape drawn from the circular blank sheet when comparing the punch force (32.33 KN) recorded when redrawing the cylindrical shape into a star shape. This is due to the exposure of the cup produced drawn from the blank to the highest tensile stress. The highest value of the effective stress (709MPa) and effective strain (0.751) recorded with the star shape drawn from a circular blank sheet. The maximum value of lamination (8.707%) is recorded at the cup curling (the concave area) with the first method compared to the maximum value of lamination (5.822%) recorded at the cup curling (the concave area) with the second method because of this exposure to the highest concentration of stresses. Background: Finite element simulation has become an important method for the mechanism research of metal machining in recent years. Objective: To study the cutting mechanism of hardened 45 steel (45HRC), and improve the processing efficiency and quality. Methods: A 3D oblique finite element model of traditional turning of hardened 45 steel based on ABAQUS was established in this paper. The feasibility of the finite element model was verified by experiment, and the influence of cutting parameters on cutting force was predicted by single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment based on simulation. Finally, the empirical formula of cutting force was fitted by MATLAB. Besides, a lot of patents on 3D finite element simulation for metal machining were studied. Results: The results show that the 3D oblique finite element model can predict three direction cutting force, the 3D chip shape, and other variables of metal machining and the prediction errors of three direction cutting force are 5%, 9.02%, and 8.56%. The results of single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment are in good agreement with similar research, which shows that the model can meet the needs for engineering application. Besides, the empirical formula and the prediction results of cutting force are helpful for the parameters optimization and tool design. Conclusion: A 3D oblique finite element model of traditional turning of hardened 45 steel is established, based on ABAQUS, and the validation is carried out by comparing with experiment.

This paper shows the finite element simulation of a representative specimen from the firewall section in the AEROMARMI ESTELA M1 aircraft. This specimen is manufactured in glass and carbon / epoxy laminates. The specimen is subjected to a load which direction and magnitude are determined by a previous dynamic loads study [10], taking into account the maximum load factor allowed by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) for utilitarian aircrafts [11]. A representative specimen is manufactured with the same features of the firewall. Meanwhile a fix is built in order to introduce the load directions on the representative specimen. The relationship between load and displacement is plotted for this representative specimen, whence the maximum displacement at the specific load is obtained, afterwards it is compared with the finite element model, which is modified in its laminate thicknesses in order to decrease the deviation error; subsequently this features could be applied to perform the whole firewall analysis in a future model [10].

The microstructure and material properties of AZ31 magnesium alloy are very sensitive to process parameters, which directly determine the service properties. To explore and understand the deformation behavior and the optimization of the deformation process, the microstructure evolution during equal channel angular pressing was predicted by using the DEFORM-3D software package at different temperature. To verify the finite element simulation results, the microstructure across the transverse direction of the billet was measured. The results show that the effects strain and deformation temperatures on the microstructure evolution of AZ31 magnesium during ECAP process are significant, and a good agreement between the predicted and experimental results was obtained, which confirmed that the derived dynamic recrystallization mathematical models can be successfully incorporated into the finite element model to predict the microstructure evolution of ECAP process for AZ31 magnesium.
