Endwall Boundary Layer Flows and Losses in an Axial Turbine Stage

In order to gain an insight into boundary layer phenomena in axial flow turbines, experimental studies were carried out on a large-scale, low speed, single stage machine. Low and high frequency instrumentation supplemented by flow visualizations were used to determine the details of the flows and losses in the stator and rotor blade rows. Measurements of the turbine stator flows, which were obtained at two different inlet wall boundary layer thicknesses, were generally consistent with typical linear cascade observations. A major difference concerned the presence of appreciable radially directed flow. Hot-wire anemometry measurements at the turbine rotor exit, revealed strong secondary flows at the high turning hub section. The flow pattern was seen to be influenced by the spacing between the two rows of blades and by the rotor’s instantaneous position with respect to the periodic flow field arising from the upstream stator row.

A computational method for secondary flows in a compressor has been extended to treat stalled flows. An integral equation is used which simulates the inviscid flow at the wall, under the viscous flow influence. We present comparisons with experimental results for a 2D stalled boundary layer, and for the secondary flow in a highly loaded stator of an axial flow compressor.

In this article, a theoretical analysis of the flows arising in the cross sections of fluid and gas flows is performed. Such flows are subdivided into secondary flows and coherent structures. From experimental studies it is known that both types of flows are long-lived large-scale movements (LSM) stretched along the flow. The relative stability of the vortices is traditionally explained by the fact that the viscous friction forces that inhibit the rotation are compensated by the intensification of the swirl when moving slowly rotating peripheral layers to the center of the vortex due to longitudinal tension. An analysis of this mechanism made it possible to develop a relatively simple model of vortex structures in which the viscous friction forces and axial expansion are considered to be infinitesimal. Under these assumptions, one can use the equations of motion of an ideal fluid in the variables “stream function - vorticity”. It is shown that under certain assumptions these equations take the form of a wave equation, and the boundary conditions are the condition that the stream function on the solid walls of the flow equals zero. The obtained solutions of the wave equation describe the following special cases: Goertler’s vortices between rotating cylinders, secondary flows in a pipe with a square cross section, swirling flow in a round pipe, paired vortex after bend of the pipe. The physical sense of more complex solutions of the wave equation has become clear relatively recently. Very similar structures were found in experimental studies using orthogonal decomposition (POD) of a turbulent pulsations field. This may mean that the eigenfunctions in the POD correspond to coherent structures that really arise in the flow. The results obtained confirm the hypothesis that secondary flows and coherent structures have a common nature. The solutions obtained in this paper can be used in processing the experiment as eigenfunctions for the orthogonal decomposition method. In addition, they can be used in direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows

A naphthalene sublimation technique is used to determine the circumferential and longitudinal variations of mass transfer from a smooth circular cylinder in a crossflow of air. The effect of the three-dimensional secondary flows near the wall-attached ends of a cylinder is discussed. For a cylinder Reynolds number of 19000, local enhancement of the mass transfer over values in the center of the tunnel are observed up to a distance of 3.5 cylinder diameters from the tunnel wall. In a narrow span extending from the tunnel wall to about 0.066 cylinder diameters above it (about 0.75 of the mainstream boundary layer displacement thickness), increases of 90 to 700 percent over the two-dimensional flow mass transfer are measured on the front portion of the cylinder. Farther from the wall, local increases of up to 38 percent over the two-dimensional values are measured. In this region, increases of mass transfer in the rear portion of the cylinder, downstream of separation, are, in general, larger and cover a greater span than the increases in the front portion of the cylinder.

In low-pressure-turbines (LPT) around 60–70% of losses are generated away from end-walls, while the remaining 30–40% is controlled by the interaction of the blade profile with the end-wall boundary layer. Experimental and numerical studies have shown how the strength and penetration of the secondary flow depends on the characteristics of the incoming end-wall boundary layer. Experimental techniques did shed light on the mechanism that controls the growth of the secondary vortices, and scale-resolving CFD allowed to dive deep into the details of the vorticity generation. Along these lines, this paper discusses the end-wall flow characteristics of the T106 LPT profile at Re = 120K and M = 0.59 by benchmarking with experiments and investigating the impact of the incoming boundary layer state. The simulations are carried out with proven Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and large-eddy simulation (LES) solvers to determine if Reynolds Averaged models can capture the relevant flow details with enough accuracy to drive the design of this flow region. Part I of the paper focuses on the critical grid needs to ensure accurate LES, and on the analysis of the overall time averaged flow field and comparison between RANS, LES and measurements when available. In particular, the growth of secondary flow features, the trace and strength of the secondary vortex system, its impact on the blade load variation along the span and end-wall flow visualizations are analysed. The ability of LES and RANS to accurately predict the secondary flows is discussed together with the implications this has on design.

An integral method of calculating the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer development through the blade rows of turbomachines is described. It is based on the solution of simultaneous equations for (i) & (ii) the growth of streamwise and cross-flow momentum thicknesses; (iii) entrainment; (iv) the wall shear stress; (v) the position of maximum cross-flow. The velocity profile of the streamwise boundary layer is assumed to be that described by Coles. The cross-flow profile is assumed to be the simple form suggested by Johnston, but modified by the effect of bounding blade surfaces, which restrict the cross-flow. The momentum equations include expressions for “force-defect” terms which are also based on secondary flow analysis. Calculations of the flow through a set of guide vanes of low deflection show good agreement with experimental results; however, attempts to calculate flows of higher deflection are found to be less successful.

This study is aimed at exploring the possibility of aerodynamic performance improvement by providing part-span forward sweep and lean near the tip regions of axial flow turbine rotor blades. Such aerodynamic benefits may have application potential in the uncooled LPT blades. The curved forward sweep and curved lean have been provided to 25% of the blade span near the tip in cascade, Three sets of cascades of the same turbine airfoil have been studied — (i) straight blades, (ii) part span swept blades and (iii) part span leaned blades. The cascade results show that swept blade gives a recovery of 20–25% loss in blade performance near the tip region at 0° and 10° incidences. The swept and leaned blades suppress the Cp perturbations (as seen in straight blades) at 0° and at 10° incidences, on the suction surfaces of turbine blade cascades. Comparatively the leaned blades show blade unloading, largely on the pressure surface, which leads to some performance reduction. The wake loss study shows reduction in wake losses for swept turbine blade at near tip region. The end-wall boundary layer measurements across the open tips demonstrate some aerodynamic improvement, near the tip regions, for parts-span swept and leaned blades.

Previously published measurements in a low-speed, single-stage, axial-flow turbine have been reanalyzed in the light of more recent understanding. The measurements include time-resolved hot-wire traverses and surface hot film gage measurements at the midspan of the rotor suction surface with three different rotor-stator spacings. Part 1 investigates the suction surface boundary layer transition process, using surface-distance time plots and boundary layer cross sections to demonstrate the unsteady and two-dimensional nature of the process. Part 2 of the paper will describe the results of supporting experiments carried out in a linear cascade together with a simple transition model, which explains the features seen in the turbine.

The annulus wall boundary layer inside the blade passage of the inlet guide vane (IGV) passage of a low-speed axial compressor stage was measured with a miniature five-hole probe. The three-dimensional velocity and pressure fields were measured at various axial and tangential locations. Limiting streamline angles and static pressures were also measured on the casing of the IGV passage. Strong secondary vorticity was developed. The data were analyzed and correlated with the existing velocity profile correlations. The end wall losses were also derived from these data.

Measurements are presented of the calmed region behind triggered wave packets and turbulent spots under a controlled diffusion adverse pressure gradient in a wind tunnel. Similar measurements are also presented from the stator blades of an axial flow compressor, where turbulent spots are induced by the passing of rotor wakes. The purpose is to gain an appreciation of turbulent spot behavior under a strong adverse pressure gradient as a foundation for the more accurate modeling of spots and their environment in predictions of transitional boundary layer flows. Under an adverse pressure gradient the calmed region behind the spot is extensive; its interaction with the surrounding turbulent layer is complex and is dependent on whether the surrounding natural boundary layer is laminar or turbulent. Some insights are gleaned concerning the behavior of the calmed region which will subsequently be used in attempts to model the calmed region. Although these fundamental investigations of the calmed region have been extensive much remains to be understood.
