A Study of Cracking During Welding of Aluminum Alloys

The objective of this investigation was to establish the factors governing weldability and to determine their effects with sufficient quantitativeness to be able to predict cracking. A test was developed that permits variation of three factors deduced to be important—strain, maximum temperature, and cooling rate—so that welding conditions can be duplicated on a parent-metal specimen. Predictions of cracking during cooling of aluminum alloy panels containing 4.5 and 8 weight percent copper were made from results of this test and observed to be very accurate.

Refining grain plays an important role in improving the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. However, the conventional casting method with a slow cooling rate can be easy to cause coarseness of the microstructure and serious segregation. In this paper, the rapid solidification of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy was prepared by the single-roller belt method. The alloy strip was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and hardness test to study the microstructure and properties of the rapidly solidified aluminum alloy. The results show that the roller speed was an important parameters affecting the formability of the alloy. When the roller speed was 15 m/s, the aluminum alloy produced a thin bandwidth of 5 mm and a thickness of 150 um. As the rotation speed of the roller increased, the cooling rate of the melt increased, and the microstructure of the rapidly solidified Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloy strip improved in grains refinement. Compared with the conventionally cast Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloys, the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloys prepared by rapid solidification showed much finer crystal grains, and enhanced solid solubility of alloying elements with less precipitation of second phase and high hardness.

A357 and 6082 aluminum alloys strengthened by aluminum nitride nanoparticles were obtained. The process of crystallization of the A357-0.5 wt% Al2O3 and 6082-0.5 wt% Al2O3 alloys was studied under conditions of varying the cooling rate. The A357 and 6082 aluminum alloy structure and hardness were analyzed for the Al2O3 content from 0 to 1 wt%.

For fuel savings as well as energy and resource requirement, high strength low alloy steels (HSLA) are of particular interest to automobile industry because of the potential weight reduction which can be achieved by using thinner section of these steels to carry the same load and thus to improve the fuel mileage. Dual phase treatment has been utilized to obtain superior strength and ductility combinations compared to the HSLA of identical composition. Recently, cooling rate following heat treatment was found to be important to the tensile properties of the dual phase steels. In this paper, we report the results of the investigation of cooling rate on the microstructures and mechanical properties of several vanadium HSLA steels.The steels with composition (in weight percent) listed below were supplied by China Steel Corporation: 1. low V steel (0.11C, 0.65Si, 1.63Mn, 0.015P, 0.008S, 0.084Aℓ, 0.004V), 2. 0.059V steel (0.13C, 0.62S1, 1.59Mn, 0.012P, 0.008S, 0.065Aℓ, 0.059V), 3. 0.10V steel (0.11C, 0.58Si, 1.58Mn, 0.017P, 0.008S, 0.068Aℓ, 0.10V).

In the present investigation, the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was employed to form aluminum oxide coating layers to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys. The formed protective coating layers were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and characterized by several electrochemical techniques, including open circuit potential (OCP), linear potentiodynamic polarization (LP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results were reported in comparison with the bare 6061-O aluminum alloy to determine the corrosion performance of the coated 6061-O alloy. The PEO-treated aluminum alloy showed substantially higher corrosion resistance in comparison with the untreated substrate material. A relationship was found between the coating formation stage, process parameters and the thickness of the oxide-formed layers, which has a measurable influence on enhancing corrosion resistance properties. This study demonstrates promising results of utilizing PEO process to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys and could be recommended as a method used in industrial applications.

There is controversy in the literature regarding the existence of the metastable γ′ phase with an ordered Ll2 structure in rapidly solidified Fe–Ni–Al–C alloys. In this study, the quench rate–metastable structure dependence was examined in the Fe–20Ni–8Al–2C (weight percent) alloy. The effect of silicon on the kinetics of phase formation was studied by adding two weight percent silicon to a base alloy of Fe–20Ni–8Al–2C. Samples were rapidly solidified in an arc hammer apparatus and examined by transmission electron microscopy. In the Fe–20Ni–8Al–2C alloy, the nonequilibrium γ′ and γ phases were found in foils 65 to 100 μm thick. At higher quench rates, i.e., thinner samples, the matrix was observed to be disordered fcc γ with K-carbide precipitates. Samples containing silicon were found to have a matrix composed of γ′ and γ structures when the foils were thicker than 40 μm. At higher quench rates, the matrix was disordered fcc γ with K-carbide precipitates. The nonequilibrium γ′ and γ structures are present in samples with or without silicon, but are observed at higher cooling rates with the addition of silicon. This sensitivity to cooling rate and composition in resulting metastable structures may explain the differences reported in the literature for these rapidly solidified materials.

The aluminum alloys of the 7xxx series consist of Al with Zn mainly, Mg and Cu. 7xxx aluminum alloys has high mechanical properties making it distinct from other aluminum alloys. In this paper, we examine the effect of adding Nickel and heat treatments on the microstructure and hardness of the 7075 aluminum alloy. Were we added different percentages of nickel [0.1, 0.5, 1] wt% to 7075 Aluminum alloy, and applied various heat treatments (artificial aging T6 and Retrogression and re-aging RRA) on the 7075 alloys that Containing nickel. By applying RRA treatment, we obtained better results than the results obtained by applying T6 treatment, and we obtained the high values of hardness and a smoother microstructure for the studied alloys by the addition of (0.5 wt%) nickel to alloy 7075.
