We consider a chain of N nonlinear resonators with natural frequency ratios of approximately 2:1 along the chain and weak nonlinear coupling that allows energy to flow between resonators. Specifically, the coupling is such that the response of one resonator parametrically excites the next resonator in the chain, and also creates a resonant back-action on the previous resonator in the chain. This class of systems, which is a generic model for passive frequency dividers, is shown to have rich dynamical behavior. Of particular interest in applications is the case when the high frequency end of the chain is resonantly excited, and coupling results in a cascade of subharmonic bifurcations down the chain. When the entire chain is activated, that is, when all N resonators have nonzero amplitudes, if the input frequency on the first resonator is Ω, the terminal resonator responds with frequency Ω/2N. The details of the activation depend on the strength and frequency of the input, the level of resonator dissipation, and the frequency mistuning in the chain. In this paper we present analytical results, based on perturbation methods, which provide useful predictions about these responses in terms of system and input parameters. Parameter conditions for activation of the entire chain are derived, along with results about other phenomena, such as the period doubling accumulation to full activation, and regions of multistability. We demonstrate the utility of the predictive results by direct comparison with simulations of the equations of motion, and we also present a sample mechanical system that embodies the desired properties. These results are useful for the design and operation of mechanical frequency dividers that are based on subharmonic resonances.

We consider a chain of N nonlinear resonators with natural frequency ratios of approximately 2:1 along the chain and weak nonlinear coupling of a form that allows energy to flow between resonators. Specifically, the coupling is such that the response of one resonator parametrically excites the next resonator in the chain, and also creates a resonant backaction on the previous resonator in the chain. This class of systems, which is being proposed for micro-electro-mechanical frequency dividers, is shown to have rich dynamical behavior. Of particular interest is the case when the high frequency end of the chain is resonantly excited, and coupling results in the potential for a cascade of sub-harmonic bifurcations down the chain. When the entire chain is activated, that is, when all N resonators have non-zero amplitudes, if the input frequency on the first resonator is Ω, then the terminal resonator responds with frequency Ω/2N. The details of the activation depend on the strength and frequency of the input, the level of resonator dissipation, and the mistuning in the chain. In this paper we present analytical results, based on perturbation methods, which provide useful predictions about these responses in terms of system and input parameters. Parameter conditions for activation of the entire chain are derived, along with results about other phenomena, such as bistability and partial activation of the chain. We demonstrate the utility of the predictive results by direct comparison with simulations of the equations of motion, and we also present samples of mechanical and electromechanical systems that realize the desired properties. These results will be useful for the design and operation of mechanical frequency dividers based on subharmonic resonances.

The potential of absorbing and harvesting energy from a two-degree-of-freedom airfoil using an attachment of a nonlinear energy sink and a piezoelectric energy harvester is investigated. The equations of motion of the airfoil coupled with the attachment are solved using the harmonic balance method. Solutions obtained by this method are compared to the numerical ones of the pseudo-arclength continuation method. The effects of parameters of the integrated nonlinear energy sink-piezoelectric attachment, namely, the attachment location, nonlinear energy sink mass, nonlinear energy sink damping, and nonlinear energy sink stiffness on the dynamical behavior of the airfoil system are studied for both subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcation cases. Analyses demonstrate that absorbing vibration and harvesting energy are profoundly affected by the nonlinear energy sink parameters and the location of the attachment.

This paper studies the dynamics of a self-sustained electromechanical transducer. The stability of fixed points in the linear response is examined. Their local bifurcations are investigated and different types of bifurcation likely to occur are found. Conditions for the occurrence of Hopf bifurcations are derived. Harmonic oscillatory solutions are obtained in both nonresonant and resonant cases. Their stability is analyzed in the resonant case. Various bifurcation diagrams associated to the largest one-dimensional (1-D) numerical Lyapunov exponent are obtained, and it is found that chaos can appear suddenly, through period doubling, period adding, or torus breakdown. The extreme sensitivity of the electromechanical system to both initial conditions and tiny variations of the coupling coefficients is also outlined. The experimental study of̱the electromechanical system is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit (analog simulator) is proposed for the investigation of the dynamical behavior of the electromechanical system. Correspondences are established between the coefficients of the electromechanical system model and the components of the electronic circuit. Harmonic oscillatory solutions and phase portraits are obtained experimentally. One of the most important contributions of this work is to provide a set of reliable analytical expressions (formulas) describing the electromechanical system behavior. These formulas are of great importance for design engineers as they can be used to predict the states of the electromechanical systems and respectively to avoid their destruction. The reliability of the analytical formulas is demonstrated by the very good agreement with the results obtained by both the numeric and the experimental analysis.

This paper presents a study of the nonlinear dynamic behavior a flying capacitor four-level three-cell DC-DC buck converter. Its stability analysis is performed and its stability boundaries is determined in the multi-dimensional paramertic space. First, the switched model of the converter is presented. Then, a discrete-time controller for the converter is proposed. The controller is is responsible for both balancing the flying capacitor voltages from one hand and for output current regulation. Simulation results from the switched model of the converter under the proposed controller are presented. The results show that the system may undergo bifurcation phenomena and period doubling route to chaos when some system parameters are varied. One-dimensional bifurcation diagrams are computed and used to explore the possible dynamical behavior of the system. By using Floquet theory and Filippov method to derive the monodromy matrix, the bifurcation behavior observed in the converter is accurately predicted. Based on justified and realistic approximations of the system state variables waveforms, simple and accurate expressions for these steady-state values and the monodromy matrix are derived and validated. The simple expression of the steady-state operation and the monodromy matrix allow to analytically predict the onset of instability in the system and the stability region in the parametric space is determined. Numerical simulations from the exact switched model validate the theoretical predictions.

Abstract The autoparametric vibratory system consisting of a primary spring-mass-dashpot system coupled with a damped simple pendulum serves as an useful example of two degree-of-freedom nonlinear systems that exhibit complex dynamic behavior. It exhibits 1:2 internal resonance and amplitude modulated chaos under harmonic forcing conditions. First-order averaging studies of this system using AUTO and KAOS have yielded useful information about the amplitude dynamics of this system. Response curves of the system indicate saturation and the pitchfork bifurcation sets are found to be symmetric. The period-doubling route to chaotic solutions is observed. However questions about the range of the small parameter ε (a function of the forcing amplitude) for which the solutions are valid cannot be answered by a first-order study. Some observed dynamical behavior, like saturation, may not persist when higher-order nonlinear effects are taken into account. Second-order averaging of the system, using Mathematica (Maeder, 1991; Wolfram, 1991) is undertaken to address these questions. Loss of saturation is observed in the steady-state amplitude responses. The breaking of symmetry in the various bifurcation sets becomes apparent as a consequence of ε appearing in the averaged equations. The dynamics of the system is found to be very sensitive to damping, with extremely complicated behavior arising for low values of damping. For large ε second-order averaging predicts additional Pitchfork and Hopf bifurcation points in the single-mode response.

Abstract The paper presents a new hybrid parallelizable low order algorithm for modeling the dynamic behavior of multi-rigid-body chain systems. The method is based on cutting certain system interbody joints so that largely independent multibody subchain systems are formed. These subchains interact with one another through associated unknown constraint forces f¯c at the cut joints. The increased parallelism is obtainable through cutting the joints and the explicit determination of associated constraint loads combined with a sequential O(n) procedure. In other words, sequential O(n) procedures are performed to form and solve equations of motion within subchains and parallel strategies are used to form and solve constraint equations between subchains in parallel. The algorithm can easily accommodate the available number of processors while maintaining high efficiency. An O[(n+m)Np+m(1+γ)Np+mγlog2Np](0<γ<1) performance will be achieved with Np processors for a chain system with n degrees of freedom and m constraints due to cutting of interbody joints.

Abstract In order to get a better understanding of the dynamics of active magnetic bearing (AMB) systems under extreme operating conditions a simple, nonlinear model for a radial AMB system is investigated. Instead of the common way of linearizing the magnetic forces at the center position of the rotor with respect to rotor displacement and coil current, the fully nonlinear force to displacement and the force to current characteristics are used. The AMB system is excited by unbalance forces of the rotor. Especially for the case of large rotor eccentricities, causing large rotor displacements, the behaviour of the system is discussed. A path-following analysis of the equations of motion shows that for some combinations of parameters well-known nonlinear phenomena may occur, as, for example, symmetry breaking, period doubling and even regions of global instability can be observed.

The work is devoted to the analysis of dynamics of traveling waves in a chain of self-oscillators with period-doubling route to chaos. As a model we use a ring of Chua's circuits symmetrically coupled via a resistor. We consider how complicated are temporal regimes with parameters changing influences on spatial structures in the chain. We demonstrate that spatial periodicity exists until transition to chaos through period-doubling and tori birth bifurcations of regular regimes. Temporal quasi-periodicity does not induce spatial quasi-periodicity in the ring. After transition to chaos exact spatial periodicity is changed by the spatial periodicity in the average. The periodic spatial structures in the chain are connected with synchronization of oscillations. For quantity researching of the synchronization we propose a measure of chaotic synchronization based on the coherence function and investigate the dependence of the level of synchronization on the strength of coupling and on the chaos developing in the system. We demonstrate that the spatial periodic structure is completely destroyed as a consequence of loss of coherence of oscillations on base frequencies.

In this paper, we study the dynamical behavior of a prey-dependent digestive model with a state-dependent impulsive effect. Using the Poincaré map and the Lambert W-function, we find the analytical expression of discrete mapping. Sufficient conditions are established for transcritical bifurcation and period-doubling bifurcation through an analytical method. Exact locations of these bifurcations are explored. Numerical simulations of an example are illustrated which agree well with our theoretical results.
