The results of the experimental study of the Reynolds number effect on the process of the Rayleigh–Taylor (R-T) instability transition into the turbulent stage are presented. The experimental liquid layer was accelerated by compressed gas. Solid particles were scattered on the layer free surface to specify the initial perturbations in some experiments. The process was recorded with the use of a high-speed motion picture camera. The following results were obtained in experiments: (1) Long-wave perturbation is developed at the interface at the Reynolds numbers Re < 104. If such perturbation growth is limited by a hard wall, the jet directed in gas is developed. If there is no such limitation, this perturbation is resolved into the short-wave ones with time, and their growth results in gas-liquid mixing. (2) Short-wave perturbations specified at the interface significantly reduce the Reynolds number Re for instability to pass into the turbulent mixing stage.

An experimental investigation of entrainment and mixing in reacting and non-reacting turbulent mixing layers at large Schmidt number is presented. In non-reacting cases, a passive scalar is used to measure the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the composition field. Chemically reacting experiments employ a diffusion-limited acid–base reaction to directly measure the extent of molecular mixing. The measurements make use of laser-induced fluorescence diagnostics and high-speed, real-time digital image-acquisition techniques.Our results show that the vortical structures in the mixing layer initially roll-up with a large excess of fluid from the high-speed stream entrapped in the cores. During the mixing transition, not only does the amount of mixed fluid increase, but its composition also changes. It is found that the range of compositions of the mixed fluid, above the mixing transition and also throughout the transition region, is essentially uniform across the entire transverse extent of the layer. Our measurements indicate that the probability of finding unmixed fluid in the centre of the layer, above the mixing transition, can be as high as 0.45. In addition, the mean concentration of mixed fluid across the layer is found to be approximately constant at a value corresponding to the entrainment ratio. Comparisons with gas-phase data show that the normalized amount of chemical product formed in the liquid layer, at high Reynolds number, is 50% less than the corresponding quantity measured in the gas-phase case. We therefore conclude that Schmidt number plays a role in turbulent mixing of high-Reynolds-number flows.

In this study, the Reynolds number effect on the development of round jet flow is presented. The jet is produced from a smoothly contracting round nozzle and the flow structure is controlled by varying the air blower speed in order to obtain various Reynolds numbers (Re). The flow Reynolds number considered varies between 1140 and 9117. Mean velocity measurements were taken using hot-wire probe at different axial and lateral distances (0≤x/d≤50, where x is the downstream distance and d is the nozzle diameter) for the jet flow and at for 0≤x/d≤30 in long pipe attached to the nozzle. Measurements reveal that Reynolds number dictate the potential core length such that the higher the Reynolds number, the lower the potential core which is a measure of mixing of jet and ambient fluid. It shows that further away from the jet exit section, potential core decreases as Reynolds number increases, the velocity profile has a top hat shape very close to the nozzle exit and the shape is independent of Reynolds number. It is found that potential core extends up to x/d=8 for Reynolds number of 1140 as against conventional near field 0≤x/d≤6. This may suggest effect of very low Reynolds number. However, further investigation is required to ascertain this at extremely low Reynolds numbers. It is also observed that further away from the jet exit section, the higher the downstream distance, the higher the jet half-width (R1/2). Furthermore, the flow in the pipe shows almost constant value of normalised axial centerline velocity for a longer distance and this clearly indicates that there is mass redistribution rather than entrainment of ambient fluid. Overall, the Reynolds number controls the magnitude rather than the wavelength of the oscillation

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of blockage effect and Reynolds Number dependency by comparing measurements of an alpine skier in standardized positions between two wind tunnels with varying blockage ratios and speed ranges. The results indicated significant blockage effects which need to be corrected for accurate comparison between tunnels, or for generalization to performance in the field. Using an optimized blockage constant, Maskell’s blockage correction method improved the mean absolute error between the two wind tunnels from 7.7% to 2.2%. At lower Reynolds Numbers (<8 × 105, or approximately 25 m/s in this case), skier drag changed significantly with Reynolds Number, indicating the importance of testing at competition specific wind speeds. However, at Reynolds Numbers above 8 × 105, skier drag remained relatively constant for the tested positions. This may be advantageous when testing athletes from high speed sports since testing at slightly lower speeds may not only be safer, but may also allow the athlete to reliably maintain difficult positions during measurements.

The Stokes number, the ratio of the particle time scale to flow time scale, is a promising quantity for estimating changes in statistics of turbulence due to particles. First, we explored the Stokes numbers in some recent studies. Secondly, we discussed the results of our direct numerical simulation for turbulent flow with a high-density particle in a vertical duct. In the discussion, we defined the particle Reynolds number from the mean fluid velocity in the near-particle region at any time. We evaluated a new local Stokes number for the particle. It is found that the Stokes number is effective for the prediction of the distance between the particle center and one wall. Finally, we carried out experiments for turbulent water flow with aluminum balls of 1 mm in diameter in a vertical channel. The motions of aluminum balls and tracer particles in the flow were captured with a high-speed video camera. We found that the experimental results for the time changes in the wall-normal distance of the ball and the particle Reynolds number for the ball are similar to the predicted results.

When buoyant vortex rings form, azimuthal disturbances occur on their surface. When the magnitude of the disturbance is sufficiently high, the ring will become turbulent. This paper establishes conditions for categorization of a buoyant vortex ring as laminar, transitional, or turbulent. The transition regime of enclosed-air buoyant vortex rings rising in still water was examined experimentally via two high-speed cameras. Sequences of the recorded pictures were analyzed using matlab. Key observations were summarized as follows: for Reynolds number lower than 14,000, Bond number below 30, and Weber number below 50, the vortex ring could not be produced. A transition regime was observed for Reynolds numbers between 40,000 and 70,000, Bond numbers between 120 and 280, and Weber number between 400 and 800. Below this range, only laminar vortex rings were observed, and above, only turbulent vortex rings.

The leading-edge boundary layer (LEBL) in the front part of swept airplane wings is prone to three-dimensional subcritical instability, which may lead to bypass transition. The resulting increase of airplane drag and fuel consumption implies a negative environmental impact. In the present paper, we present a temporal biglobal secondary stability analysis (SSA) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) of this flow to investigate a subcritical transition mechanism. The LEBL is modelled by the swept Hiemenz boundary layer (SHBL), with and without wall suction. We introduce a pair of steady, counter-rotating, streamwise vortices next to the attachment line as a generic primary disturbance. This generates a high-speed streak, which evolves slowly in the streamwise direction. The SSA predicts that this flow is unstable to secondary, time-dependent perturbations. We report the upper branch of the secondary neutral curve and describe numerous eigenmodes located inside the shear layers surrounding the primary high-speed streak and the vortices. We find secondary flow instability at Reynolds numbers as low as$Re\approx 175$, i.e. far below the linear critical Reynolds number$Re_{crit}\approx 583$of the SHBL. This secondary modal instability is confirmed by our three-dimensional DNS. Furthermore, these simulations show that the modes may grow until nonlinear processes lead to breakdown to turbulent flow for Reynolds numbers above$Re_{tr}\approx 250$. The three-dimensional mode shapes, growth rates, and the frequency dependence of the secondary eigenmodes found by SSA and the DNS results are in close agreement with each other. The transition Reynolds number$Re_{tr}\approx 250$at zero suction and its increase with wall suction closely coincide with experimental and numerical results from the literature. We conclude that the secondary instability and the transition scenario presented in this paper may serve as a possible explanation for the well-known subcritical transition observed in the leading-edge boundary layer.

A survey is given of extensive research work on cascade-flow problems carried out in recent years in Germany. A considerable part of this work was done in the Variable Density High Speed Cascade Wind Tunnel of the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fu¨r Luftfahrt at Braunschweig, in which the Reynolds number and the Mach number of the cascade can be varied independently. For compressor cascades with blades of different thickness ratio extensive measurements of the aerodynamic coefficients have been carried out in a wide range of Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. For very low Reynolds numbers, as they occur for jet engines in high-altitude flight, the influence of turbulence level on loss coefficients has been investigated. Furthermore, comprehensive investigations on secondary-flow losses are reported. The most important parameters in this connection are the ratio of blade length to blade chord, the tip clearance, the Reynolds number, and the deflection of the flow in the cascade. The influence of all these parameters on the secondary-flow losses has been clarified to a certain extent.

Taking Beijiang Bridge as an example, using 3D finite element method, influence of side stringer to deck deformation of four-lines high-speed railway cable-stayed bridge with double cable planes is studied. The results show that the stiffness of the side stringer hardly influence the long wave of bridge deformation and the ratio of deflection to span, but significantly affects the short wave and transversal wave of the bridge deformation. The location of the side stringer influences the long wave slightly, but influences the short wave and transversal wave significantly. If the distance between the side stringer and the center of the main trusses changed, the long wave changes slightly, while the maximum short wave and transversal wave change a lot. The larger the distance, the less the transversal span of the deck and panel beams are, and the less the short wave and transversal wave are. The influence of the axial stiffness of horizontal K-shaped brace to the bridge deformation is small.

Abstract In compressor design, a convenient way to save time is to scale an existing geometry to required specifications, rather than developing a new design. The approach works well when scaling compressors of similar size at high Reynolds numbers but becomes more complex when applied to small-scale machines. Besides the well-understood increase in surface friction due to increased relative surface roughness, two other main problems specific to small-scale turbomachinery can be specified: (1) the Reynolds number effect, describing the non-linear dependency of surface friction on Reynolds number and (2) increased relative tip clearance resulting from manufacturing limitations. This paper investigates the role of both effects in a geometric scaling process, as used by a designer. The work is based on numerical models derived from an experimentally validated geometry. First, the effects of geometric scaling on compressor performance are assessed analytically. Second, prediction capabilities of reduced-order models from the public domain are assessed. In addition to design point assessment, often found in other publications, the models are tested at off-design. Third, the impact of tip leakage on compressor performance and its Reynolds number dependency is assessed. Here, geometries of different scale and with different tip clearances are investigated numerically. Fourth, a detailed investigation regarding tip leakage driving mechanisms is carried out and design recommendations to improve small-scale compressor performance are provided.

Flow around a high-speed rotating circular cylinder for $Re\leqslant 500$ is investigated numerically. The Reynolds number is defined as $UD/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ with $U$, $D$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ being the free-stream flow velocity, the diameter of the cylinder and the kinematic viscosity of the fluid, respectively. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of a high rotation rate on the wake flow for a range of Reynolds numbers. Simulations are performed for Reynolds numbers of 100, 150, 200, 250 and 500 and a wide range of rotation rates from 1.6 to 6 with an increment of 0.2. Rotation rate is the ratio of the rotational speed of the cylinder surface to the incoming fluid velocity. A systematic study is performed to investigate the effect of rotation rate on the flow transition to different flow regimes. It is found that there is a transition from a two-dimensional vortex shedding mode to no vortex shedding mode when the rotation rate is increased beyond a critical value for Reynolds numbers between 100 and 200. Further increase in rotation rate results in a transition to three-dimensional flow which is characterized by the presence of finger-shaped (FV) vortices that elongate in the wake of the cylinder and very weak ring-shaped vortices (RV) that wrap the surface of the cylinder. The no vortex shedding mode is not observed at Reynolds numbers greater than or equal to 250 since the flow remains three-dimensional. As the rotation rate is increased further, the occurrence frequency and size of the ring-shaped vortices increases and the flow is dominated by RVs. The RVs become bigger in size and the flow becomes chaotic with increasing rotation rate. A detailed analysis of the flow structures shows that the vortices always exist in pairs and the strength of separated shear layers increases with the increase of rotation rate. A map of flow regimes on a plane of Reynolds number and rotation rate is presented.
