Partial slip texture surfaces have proven to be effective to improve load capacity and reduce coefficient of friction in slider and journal bearings. By controlling the partial slip surface texture properties, bearing with desired performance can be designed. It is of consequent interest to study the lubrication of slider and journal bearing systems taking into consideration design of partial slip texture surfaces. This paper aims at covering several investigation works related to slider and journal bearing lubricated with Newtonian fluids focusing on partial slip texture influence on bearing performance characteristics.

Based on the approach of two-layered film consisting of different Newtonian viscosities, the present study examines the effects of partial slip bearing configuration on load capacity and friction coefficient for journal bearing. Navier slip boundary conditions are used to analyze partial slip configuration. A modified Reynolds equation for a journal bearing with two-layered film on a partial slip surface is presented. The modified Reynolds equation is derived taking into consideration of magnitude of lubricant layers film thickness, viscosities and the extent of partial slip on the bearing surface. The Reynolds boundary conditions are used in the analysis to predict nondimensional load capacity and coefficient of friction. Partial slip of bearing surfaces has a potential to improve load carrying capacity and reduce coefficient of friction for two-layered film journal bearing.

An analytical solution for the performance characteristics of finite porous journal bearings is obtained. Results are presented which relate the eccentricity ratio and coefficient of friction as functions of load number for design variables of 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1. The load capacity obtained by using the finite bearing theory is compared to the load capacity obtained by using the short-bearing approximation and the infinite-bearing approximation.

This paper presents one-dimensional analysis of modified dynamic Reynolds equation derived for partial slip texture multi-lobe journal bearings. The novelty included in this study is the configuration of partial slip texture region on the bottom bearing lobe surface of a multi-lobe journal bearing under a constant vertical load. The nondimensional pressure and shear stress for steady-state and nondimensional pressure gradients for dynamic coefficients for each lobe with partial slip texture configuration are derived based on narrow groove theory. Linearized stability analysis is evaluated using infinitesimal perturbation method. Results of static and stability characteristics of partial slip texture multi-lobe (two-axial groove, elliptical, three-lobe and offset) journal bearings are presented. Partial slip texture configuration significantly enhances load capacity, coefficient of friction, and stability of two-lobe journal bearing.

The aim of this paper is to make available to the industrial designer results of the thermohydrodynamic theory of journal bearings, by providing a simplified, yet accurate model of journal bearing lubrication that can be implemented on a personal computer and be used in an interactive mode. The simplified THD theory we propose consists of two coupled ordinary differential equations for pressure and energy and an algebraic equation for viscosity, which are to be solved iteratively. Bearing load capacity, maximum bearing temperature, maximum pressure, coefficient of friction and lubricant flow rate calculated from this simplified theory compare well with results from a more sophisticated model. We also make comparisons with experimental data on full journal bearings, demonstrating substantial agreement between experiment and simplified theory.

The paper examines the effect of velocity slip in a thin-walled infinitely short rough porous journal bearing operating under steady conditions in a hydrodynamic regime. The analysis extends earlier work [1] in which the tangential velocity at the surface of the porous material was neglected. The problem is solved analytically together with associated boundary conditions. It is found that there exists a strong interaction between roughness and slip effects. A comparison with the case of an infinitely long journal bearing [2] shows that there are significant qualitative and quantitative differences in load capacity and coefficient of friction. However, the slip-induced variations in friction force are similar to those for an infinitely long journal bearing.

Purpose The current trend of modern industry is to use machineries which rotate at high speed along with the capability of carrying heavy rotor loads. This paper aims at static thermal analysis of two different profiles of non-circular journal bearings – a true elliptical bearing and orthogonal bearing. Design/methodology/approach The Reynolds equation has been solved through finite difference method to compute the oil film pressure. Parabolic temperature profile approximation technique has been used to solve the energy equation and thus used for computation of various bearing performance characteristics such as thermo-hydrodynamic oil film pressure, temperature, load capacity, Sommerfeld number and power loss characteristics across the bearing. The effect of ellipticity ratio on the bearing performance characteristics has also been obtained for both the elliptical and vertical offset bearing using three different commercially available grades of oil (Hydrol 32, 68 and 100). Findings It has been observed that the thermo-hydrodynamic pressure and temperature rise of the oil film is less in orthogonal bearing as compared to the true elliptical bearing for same operating conditions. The effect of ellipticity ratio of non-circularity on bearing performance parameters have been observed to be less in case of elliptical bearing as compared to orthogonal bearing. It has been concluded that though the rise in oil film temperature is high for true elliptical bearing, but still it should be preferred over orthogonal profile under study, as it has comparably good load-carrying capacity. Originality/value The performance parametric analysis will help the designers to select such kind of non-circular journal bearing for various applications.

A theoretical analysis of the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of multi-recess hybrid oil journal bearings is presented. A perturbation theory for small vibrations is used to solve an incompressible, finite journal bearing with a time-dependent term. Load capacity, attitude angle, friction parameter, stiffness and damping coefficients are evaluated for a capillary-compensated bearing.

The present study examines the influence of partial texturing of bearing surfaces on improvement in load capacity and reduction in friction coefficient for slider and journal bearing. The geometry of partially textured slider and journal bearing considered in this work composed of a number of successive regions of groove and land configurations. The nondimensional pressure expressions for the partially textured slider and journal bearing are derived taking into consideration of texture geometry and extent of partial texture. Partial texturing has a potential to generate load carrying capacity and reduce coefficient of friction, even for nominally parallel bearing surfaces.

The application of a perturbation in terms of simple correlations for friction in turbulent Couette and ‘screw’ flows, together with a further empirical assumption consonant with the experimental work of Smith and Fuller (1), leads to a pressure field equation identical in form with the Reynolds equation. The load capacity of journal bearings throughout most of the superlaminar range may be represented by a single curve, and existing laminar solutions may be applied with the parameters modified by Reynolds number. The theory is compared with published experimental results, and with the most successful theoretical treatment (4). The correlations obtained confirm the adequacy of the theory to predict performance in the superlaminar régime.

Preliminary measurements have been conducted to determine the effect of oil aeration on journal bearing performance. Oil aeration was observed to reduce the bearing load capacity and to increase the bearing stiffness. Also, the bearing damping capacity was improved significantly by oil aeration.
