Abstract Explosion containment vessels are widely used in many fields. Here, the detonation impact load of explosives in a cylindrical closed explosion containment vessel partially filled with sandy soil was studied. A three-dimensional numerical model of the explosion containment vessel was established by using finite element code ls-dyna. To calibrate this numerical model, we carried out an explosion loading experiment of the explosion containment vessel. Then, the experimental data and the numerical simulation results were compared, and a good agreement between them was obtained. The calibrated numerical model was used to investigate the explosive impact load generated by explosives in a cylindrical explosion containment vessel. The results reveal the attenuation law of shock wave overpressure and the distribution characteristics of the maximum peak overpressure of the shock wave on the inner wall of the cylindrical explosion containment vessel.

A three-dimensional numerical model was used to model water circulation and spatial variation of temperature in Lake Sperillen in Norway. A winter situation was simulated, with thermal stratification and ice cover. The numerical model solved the Navier-Stokes equations on a 3D unstructured non-orthogonal grid with hexahedral cells. The SIMPLE method was used for the pressure coupling and the k-ε model was used to model turbulence, with a modification for density stratification due to the vertical temperature profile. The results were compared with field measurements of the temperature in the lake, indicating the location of the water current. Reasonably good agreement was found.

Abstract Submerged water jet causing soil excavation is a typical water-soil interaction process that occurs widely in many engineering disciplines. In hydraulic engineering for instance, a typical example would be scour downstream of headcuts, culverts, or dam spillways. In port and waterway engineering, erosion of the channel bed or quay wall by the propellers of passing ships are also typical water jet/soil interaction problems. In ocean engineering, trenching by impinging high-velocity water jets has been used as an efficient method for cable and pipeline burial. At present, physical modelling and simple prediction equations have been the main practical engineering tool for evaluating scour in these situations. However, with the increasing computational power of modern computers and the development of new Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers, scour prediction in such engineering problems has become possible. In the present work three-dimensional (3D) numerical modelling has been applied to reproduce the capability of a pair of water jets to backfill an excavated trench. The simulations are carried out using a state-of-the-art three-dimensional Eulerian two-phase scour model based on the open source CFD software OpenFOAM. The fluid phase is resolved by solving modified Navier-Stokes equations, which take into consideration the influence of the solid phase, i.e., the soil particles. This paper first presents a validation of the numerical model against vertical jet erosion tests from the literature and conducted at HR Wallingford. The results of the model show good agreement with the experimental tests, with the numerical model predicting the scour hole depth and extent with good accuracy. The paper then presents a validation of the model’s ability to reproduce deposition which is evaluated through a comparison with settling velocity data and empirical formulations found in literature, again with the model showing good agreement. Finally, the model is applied to a prototype cable burial problem using a commercially available controlled flow jet excavator. The study found that the use of water jets can be effective (subject to confirmation of the time-scale required for real operations) for performing backfill operations but that the effectiveness is closely related to the type of sediment and selection of an appropriate jet discharge. As a result, in order for the water jet method to be effective for backfill, there is a requirement for a good description of the variation in sediment type along the trench and a requirement for the jet discharge to be varied as different sediment types are encountered.

A numerical model of three-dimensional motion of plate-type wind-borne debris in uniform wind field based on quaternions is proposed in this paper. This model can simulate the complex 3D spinning flight robustly and efficiently with rotational quaternions, which are also free from the gimbal lock that is associated with Euler rotational matrix. The predictions from the model were then compared with the results of another quasi-steady model, and good agreement is found. For the unsteady flow involved in autorotational flight mode, the present model was improved by revising the damping moment in order to simulate the two-dimensional motion of plates with higher accuracy. Calibration of the damping moment coefficient was performed through a direct comparison of the predicted non-dimensional angular velocity with the results of CFD-RBD model. The predictions of the improved model agree reasonably well with the CFD-RBD results, which verifies the accuracy of the improved model in predicting the two-dimensional trajectories of plates.

A crossing-shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interaction is investigated using the k–ε turbulence model with a new low-Reynolds-number model based on the approach of Saffman (1970) and Speziale et al. (1990). The crossing shocks are generated by two wedge-shaped fins with wedge angles α1 and α2 attached normal to a flat plate on which an equilibrium supersonic turbulent boundary layer has developed. Two configurations, corresponding to the experiments of Zheltovodov et al. (1994, 1998a, b), are considered. The free-stream Mach number is 3.9, and the fin angles are (α1, α2) = (7°, 7°) and (7°, 11°). The computed surface pressure displays very good agreement with experiment. The computed surface skin friction lines are in close agreement with experiment for the initial separation, and are in qualitative agreement within the crossing shock interaction region. The computed heat transfer is in good agreement with experiment for the (α1, α2) = (7°, 7°) configuration. For the (α1, α2) = (7°, 11°) configuration, the heat transfer is significantly overpredicted within the three-dimensional interaction. The adiabatic wall temperature is accurately predicted for both configurations.

A method of damage detection and fault diagnosis for gears is presented based on the theory of elastomeric dynamics according to the theory of cracked beam. It takes an advantage of accurate fault diagnosis of gear body using the change of dynamic features and has some advantages for dynamic design of gear systems.The dynamics characteristics, i.e., natural frequency, vibration shape,dynamic response and so on, due to crack of gear tooth are studied, and the gear dynamics characteristics caused by the position and size of crack are deeply investigated by comparison with FEM. The theoretical analysis results are contrasted with numerical simulation results and shows good agreement with the result by FEM. The proposed method can be used to detect damage and diagnose fault for gear structures and also can be applied to designing dynamic characteristics for gear systems.

A numerical model for simulating unsteady flow and sediment transport in the mainstream and its tributaries at the TGR was presented in this paper, and a three-gradation method was applied to solve the flow governing equation. A experience formula was gave for the calculation of the size of groups of different coefficient of saturation recovery based on the analysis, so the traditional calculation method was improved in this paper. The validity of the model was checked with the observed data of the TGR from 2003 to 2011. Good agreement between the calculation and observed data was obtained. The simulation results show that this model could be used to simulate the flow and sediment transport at the TGR.

This letter presents a new hyperchaotic system, which was obtained by adding a nonlinear quadratic controller to the first equation and a linear controller to the second equation of the three-dimensional autonomous modified Lorenz chaotic system. This system uses only two multipliers but can generate very complex strange attractors with three positive Lyapunov exponents. The system is not only demonstrated by numerical simulations but also implemented via an electronic circuit, showing very good agreement with the simulation results.

Calculation and Measurement of Coil Inductance Profile in Tubular Linear Reluctance Motor and its Validation by Three Dimensional FEMThis paper reports a study of coil inductance profile in all positions of plunger in tubular linear reluctance motors (TLRMs) with open type magnetic circuits. In this paper, maximum inductance calculation methods in winding of tubular linear reluctance motors are described based on energy method. Furthermore, in order to calculate the maximum inductance, equivalent permeability is measured. Electromagnetic finite-element analysis for simulation and calculation of coil inductance in this motor is used. Simulation results of coil inductance calculation using 3-D FEM with coil current excitation is compared to theoretical and experimental results. The comparison yields a good agreement.

<p>The calving of large-scale icebergs into the sea can generate a local tsunami that may threaten coastal communities or passing ships. A three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model of rigid-body–fluid system is established to simulate the spatial wave generated by calving iceberg. The model is tested with simulated waves induced by a cube iceberg fall into the water body. Good agreement is obtained between simulation results and experimental data. The generation and evolution processes, and the near flow-field characteristics of the waves are analyzed. The simulation results show that waves generated in iceberg calving can generate not only a huge leading wave but also notable tailing waves. The initial propagation direction of the leading wave is determined by iceberg geometry, but as the leading wave propagates away, the water level displacement gradually develops into a semicircle wavefront which is irrelevant to iceberg geometry.</p>

AbstractThe coarsening kinetics of γ’ precipitates in binary and ternary Al3Sc1-xZrx alloys is studied by using the two- and three-dimensional phase-field simulations. Our focus is on the influence of diffusion coefficients of Sc and Zr atoms on the transformation path kinetics from disordered f.c.c. matrix to two phases equilibrium state with γ’ precipitates and f.c.c. disordered matrix. Our simulation results demonstrate that in the case of binary alloys taking into account the concentration dependence of the mobility of atoms decreases the coarsening rate. In the case of ternary alloys we show that the Al3Sc particles precipitate first following by appearance of a Zr-rich shell. Our simulations results are in good agreement with experimental observations.
