Identification and Estimation of Damage Severity in a Turbine Blade Packet Using Inverse Eigen-value Analysis-A Numerical Study

Abstract Turbine blades are critical machine components in power plants and aerospace turbo engines. Failure of these blades in operation leads to catastrophic damages as well as high cost of maintenance and repair. Blades are often assembled in packets with lacing wire or shroud ring interconnections. Natural frequencies of the bladed packets are designed in a specific range to avoid possible resonant stresses. However, frequent damages during operation alter the stiffness of the blade-packet assembly and change the eigen-spectrum. In this work, it is demonstrated that using characteristic eigen-spectrum changes, such damages can be very well identified in severity as well as location. The work employs matrix perturbation theory on the eigen-value problem, formulated from the lumped parameter modeling of the blade packet. Damage is considered as a perturbation in the stiffness matrix with damage severity acting as the perturbation parameter. First a graphical pattern recognition method and then a damage proximity index evaluation method are suggested for damage identification. Further, an estimation algorithm for damage severity is presented with numerically simulated computations, which demonstrates that the methods can exactly identify the damage location and with very little error, can estimate the damage severity.

Materials science is highly significant in space program investigation, energy production and others. Therefore, designing, improving and predicting advanced material properties is a crucial necessity. The high temperature creep and corrosion resistance of Ni-based superalloys makes them important materials for turbine blades in aircraft engines and land-based power plants. The investment casting process of turbine blades is costly and time consuming, which makes process simulations a necessity. These simulations require fundamental models for the microstructure formation. In this paper, we present advanced analytical techniques in describing the microstructures obtained experimentally and analyzed on different sample’s cross-sectional images. The samples have been processed on board the International Space Station using the MSL-EML device based on electromagnetic levitation principles. We applied several aspects of fractal analysis and obtained important results regarding fractals and Hausdorff dimensions related to the surface and structural characteristics of CMSX-10 samples. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Zeiss LEO 1550, we analyzed the microstructure of samples solidified in space and successfully performed the fractal reconstruction of the sample’s morphology. We extended the fractal analysis on the microscopic images based on samples solidified on earth and established new frontiers on the advanced structures prediction.

AbstractIncreasing numbers of wind power plants (WPP) are constructed across the globe to reduce the anthropogenic contribution to global warming. There are, however, concerns on the effects of WPP on human health as well as related effects on wildlife. To address potential effects of WPP in environmental impact assessments, existing models accounting for shadow flickering and noise are widely applied. However, a standardized, yet simple and widely applicable proxy for the visibility of rotating wind turbines in woodland areas was largely lacking up to date. We combined land cover information of forest canopy extracted from orthophotos and airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) data to represent the visibility of rotating wind turbines in five woodland study sites with a high spatial resolution. Performing an in-situ validation in five study areas across Europe which resulted in a unique sample of 1738 independent field observations, we show that our approach adequately predicts from where rotating wind turbine blades are visible within woodlands or not. We thus provide strong evidence, that our approach yields a valuable proxy of the visibility of moving rotor blades with high resolution which in turn can be applied in environmental impact assessments of WPP within woodlands worldwide.

Twenty percent of global electricity supplied to the buildings is used for preventing air temperature increase; its consumption for this prevention will triple by 2050 up to China’s present needs. Heat removed from the thermal power plants may drive cold generation in the absorption devices where mass and heat transfer are two-phase phenomena; hence liquid film break-up into the rivulets is extensively investigated, which needs knowledge of the velocity profiles. Laminar flow in a pipe is used in the preliminary study, velocity profile of developed flow is used as a benchmark. The study account writes the applied apparatus with their calibration procedure, and the uncertainty estimation algorithm. The calibration regression line with the slope close to one and a high Pearson’s coefficient value is the final outcome. Therefore, the apparatus may be applied in the principal research.

Railway bridges are an integral part of any railway communication network. As more and more railway bridges are showing signs of deterioration due to various natural and artificial causes, it is becoming increasingly imperative to develop effective health monitoring strategies specifically tailored to railway bridges. This paper presents a new damage detection framework for element level damage identification, for railway truss bridges, that combines the analysis of acceleration and strain responses. For this research, operational acceleration and strain time-history responses are obtained in response to the passage of trains. The acceleration response is analyzed through a sensor-clustering-based time-series analysis method and damage features are investigated in terms of structural nodes from the truss bridge. The strain data is analyzed through principal component analysis and provides information on damage from instrumented truss elements. A new damage index is developed by formulating a strategy to combine the damage features obtained individually from both acceleration and strain analysis. The proposed method is validated through a numerical study by utilizing a finite element model of a railway truss bridge. It is shown that while both methods individually can provide information on damage location, and severity, the new framework helps to provide substantially improved damage localization and can overcome the limitations of individual analysis.

This paper reports the results of the study on the failure modes and limit loads of piping in nuclear power plants subjected to cyclic seismic loading. By investigating the past fracture tests and earthquake resistance tests, it became clear that dominant failure mode of piping was fatigue, and the effect of ratchet strain was negligible. Until now, the stress generated with the acceleration of an earthquake was classified into the primary stress. However, the relationship between the input acceleration and the seismic response displacement of the pipe observed from earthquake resistance tests is non-linear, and increasing rate of displacement is lower than that of input acceleration in elastic-plastic stress condition. Therefore, the seismic loading can be treated as displacement controlled loading. To evaluate the reliability-based critical acceleration, a limit state function was defined taking the variations in the fatigue strength or some parameters into consideration. By using the limit state function, the reliability was evaluated for the typical piping of boiling water reactor (BWR) plants subjected to cyclic seismic loading, and a partial safety factors were calculated. Based on these results, a fatigue curve corresponding to the target reliability was proposed.

Although acceleration and cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) are used as seismic indexes, their relationship with the damage mechanism is not yet understood. In this paper, a simplified evaluation method for seismic fatigue damage, which can be used as a seismic index for screening, is derived from the stress amplitude obtained from CAV for one cycle in accordance with the velocity criterion in ASME Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants 2012, and the linear cumulative damage due to fatigue can be obtained from the linear cumulative damage rule. To verify the performance of the method, the vibration response of a cantilever pipe is calculated for four earthquake waves, and the cumulative fatigue damage is evaluated using the rain flow method. The result is in good agreement with the value obtained by the method based on the relative response. When the response spectrum obtained by the evaluation method is considered, the value obtained by the evaluation method has a peak at the peak frequency of the ground motion, and the value decreases with increasing natural frequency above the peak frequency. A higher peak frequency of the base leads to a higher value obtained by the evaluation method.

The shaft misalignment, even being a common fault in rotating machinery, is not sufficiently studied. The present work addresses effects of misalignment in rotating machinery. An attempt to give a theoretical model for a rotor-coupling-bearing system has been done. The rotor-bearing system including the flexible coupling is modelled using the finite elements. The reaction forces and moments developed due to flexible coupling misalignment both for parallel and angular are derived and introduced in the model. Vibration analyses such as eigen value analysis and unbalance response are carried out for the rotor system with misaligned shafts.

Health assessment of the girder is crucial to an overhead traveling crane. This paper presents an intelligent damage identification method for the girder based on stiffness variation index (SVI) and least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). In the method, the SVI indicators, which have high resolution to environmental noise, serve as the damage feature to detect damage locations. Moreover, the SVI indicators are input to the LSSVM classifier for identifying the actual damage level of the girder. A case study on girder damage identification demonstrates that the method could determine the actual conditions of the girder structure accurately.

The article presents the results of research into the operation of a model of a wind micropower plant with a variable blade angle. The research was carried out on a miniature model of a measuring stand built for the purpose of carrying out work on pre-developed projects of wind micro power plants. The stand allows to carry out measurements related to the selection of the optimal propeller geometry, as well as the development and testing of algorithms for optimal control of the micropower plant. The physical basics of wind turbine operation and the methods of its optimal control are presented. The results of the performed measurements for the selected propeller blade geometry with the possibility of changing its setting angle are presented. A DC generator with a load with a non-linear characteristic in the form of a Li-Po battery cell was used. The results of operation of a simple MPPT control algorithm are presented. The lack of optimal control systems for the operation of micropower plants is dictated by the general belief that the costs of its production are high in relation to the possible improvement of the efficiency of micropower plants. Moreover, the practical methods of controlling larger wind turbines are not optimal for small and very small turbines. The conducted research focused on determining the possibility of using turbines with variable blade angles depending on its rotational speed. In larger wind farms, changing the blade angle is mainly used to limit the power of the turbine at high wind speeds. In micro wind power plants such solutions are not used for economic reasons. However, the use of a simple mechanism for changing the angle of the blades depending on the rotational speed of the propeller can increase the efficiency of the turbine in a wider range of wind speeds. The small dimensions of the research model allow for quick and cheap development of preliminary prototypes of turbine blades thanks to the possibility of using 3D printing technology.
