Influence of Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity on Overall Cooling Effectiveness on a Film Cooled Leading Edge

Abstract Increasing interest in the use of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for gas turbine engine hot gas path components requires a thorough examination of the thermal behavior one may expect of such components. Their highly anisotropic thermal conductivity is a substantial departure from traditional metallic components and can influence the temperature distribution in surprising ways. With the ultimate surface temperature dependent upon the internal cooling scheme, including cooling from within the film cooling holes themselves, as well as the external film cooling, the relative influence of these contributions to cooling can be affected by the directionality of the thermal conductivity. Conjugate heat transfer computational simulations were performed to evaluate the effect of anisotropy in the leading edge region of a turbine component. The leading edge region is modeled as a fully film-cooled half cylinder with a flat afterbody. The anisotropic directionality of the thermal conductivity is shown to have a significant effect on the temperature distribution over the surface of the leading edge. While structural considerations with CMC components are often paramount, designers should be aware of the thermal ramifications associated with the selection of the CMC layup.

Abstract Particulate deposits in aero-engine turbines change the profile of blades, increase the blade surface roughness and block internal cooling channels and film cooling holes, which generally leads to the degradation of aerodynamic and cooling performance. To reveal particle deposition effects in the turbine, unsteady simulations were performed by investigating the migration patterns and deposition characteristics of the particle contaminant in a one-stage, high-pressure turbine of an aero-engine. Two typical operating conditions of the aero-engine, i.e. high-temperature take-off and economic cruise, were discussed, and the effects of particle size on the migration and deposition of fly-ash particles were demonstrated. A critical velocity model was applied to predict particle deposition. Comparisons between the stator and rotor were made by presenting the concentration and trajectory of the particles and the resulting deposition patterns on the aerofoil surfaces. Results show that the migration and deposition of the particles in the stator passage is dominated by the flow characteristics of fluid and the property of particles. In the subsequential rotor passage, in addition to these factors, particles are also affected by the stator–rotor interaction and the interference between rotors. With higher inlet temperature and larger diameter of the particle, the quantity of deposits increases and the deposition is distributed mainly on the Pressure Side (PS) and the Leading Edge (LE) of the aerofoil.

Experiments have been performed which indicate the potential of metal-fiber reinforced-ceramic matrix composites for use as a high temperature structural matrix. The results of this work reveal that metal-fiber reinforced ceramics obey compostie theory, and that after cracks occur in the matrix, a pseudo-ductility can be introduced into the composite. This toughness can be predicted from equations of work required to pull the fibers through the matrix. The relationship between strength, toughness, and crack depths, are dependent on the inter-facial bond between the fibers and matrix as well as fiber diameter and length. Based on the results of these experiments, multicomponent materials with superior resistance to failure from oxidation, thermal shock, and high mechanical stresses in air above 2400 F can be postulated. These materials have potential for use as gas turbine engine vanes.

Abstract Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) show promise as higher temperature capable alternatives to traditional metallic components in gas turbine engine hot gas paths. However, CMC components will still require both internal and external cooling, such as film cooling. The overall cooling effectiveness is determined not only by the design of coolant flow, but also by the conduction through the materiel itself. CMCs have anisotropic thermal conductivity, giving rise to heat flow that differs somewhat relative to what we have come to expect from experience with traditional metallic components. Conjugate heat transfer computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed in order to isolate the effect anisotropic thermal conductivity has on a cooling architecture consisting of both internal and external cooling. Results show the specific locations and unique effects of anisotropic thermal conduction on overall effectiveness. Thermal conductivity anisotropy is shown to have a significant effect on the resulting overall effectiveness. As CMCs begin to make their way into gas turbine engines, care must be taken to ensure that anisotropy is characterized properly and considered in the thermal analysis.

The performance of a showerhead arrangement of film cooling in the leading edge region of a first stage nozzle guide vane was experimentally and numerically evaluated. A six-vane linear cascade was tested at an isentropic exit Mach number of Ma2s = 0.42, with a high inlet turbulence intensity level of 9%. The showerhead cooling scheme consists of four staggered rows of cylindrical holes evenly distributed around the stagnation line, angled at 45° towards the tip. The blowing ratios tested are BR = 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0. Adiabatic film cooling effectiveness distributions on the vane surface around the leading edge region were measured by means of Thermochromic Liquid Crystals technique. Since the experimental contours of adiabatic effectiveness showed that there is no periodicity across the span, the CFD calculations were conducted by simulating the whole vane. Within the RANS framework, the very widely used Realizable k-ε (Rke) and the Shear Stress Transport k-ω (SST) turbulence models were chosen for simulating the effect of the BR on the surface distribution of adiabatic effectiveness. The turbulence model which provided the most accurate steady prediction, i.e. Rke, was selected for running Detached Eddy Simulation at the intermediate value of BR = 3. Fluctuations of the local temperature were computed by DES, due to the vortex structures within the shear layers between the main flow and the coolant jets. Moreover, mixing was enhanced both in the wall-normal and spanwise direction, compared to RANS modeling. DES roughly halved the prediction error of laterally averaged film cooling effectiveness on the suction side of the leading edge. However, neither DES nor RANS provided the expected decay of effectiveness progressing downstream along the pressure side, with 15% overestimation of ηav at s/C =0.2.

Detailed film cooling effectiveness distributions are measured on the leading edge of a rotating gas turbine blade with two rows (pressure-side row and suction-side row from the stagnation line) of holes aligned to the radial axis using the pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique. Film cooling effectiveness distributions are obtained by comparing the difference of the measured oxygen concentration distributions with air and nitrogen as film cooling gas respectively and by applying the mass transfer analogy. Measurements are conducted on the first-stage rotor blade of a three-stage axial turbine at 2400rpm (positive off-design), 2550rpm (design), and 3000rpm (negative off-design), respectively. The effect of three blowing ratios is also studied. The blade Reynolds number based on the axial chord length and the exit velocity is 200,000 and the total to exit pressure ratio was 1.12 for the first-stage rotor blade. The corresponding rotor blade inlet and outlet Mach numbers are 0.1 and 0.3, respectively. The film cooling effectiveness distributions are presented along with discussions on the influence of rotational speed (off design incidence angle), blowing ratio, and upstream nozzle wakes around the leading edge region. Results show that rotation has a significant impact on the leading edge film cooling distributions with the average film cooling effectiveness in the leading edge region decreasing with an increase in the rotational speed (negative incidence angle).

The leading edge of a turbine vane is subject to some of the highest temperature loading within an engine, and an accurate understanding of leading edge film coolant behavior is essential for modern engine design. Although there have been many investigations of the adiabatic effectiveness for showerhead film cooling of a vane leading edge region, there have been no previous studies in which individual rows of the showerhead were tested with the explicit intent of validating superposition models. For the current investigation, a series of adiabatic effectiveness experiments were performed with a five-row and three-row showerhead. The experiments were repeated separately with each individual row of holes active. This allowed evaluation of superposition methods on both the suction side of the vane, which was moderately convex, and the pressure side of the vane, which was mildly concave. Superposition was found to accurately predict performance on the suction side of the vane at lower momentum flux ratios, but not at higher momentum flux ratios. On the pressure side of the vane the superposition predictions were consistently lower than measured values, with significant errors occurring at the higher momentum flux ratios. Reasons for the under-prediction by superposition analysis are presented.

Gas turbine hot gas path components are protected through a combination of internal cooling and external film cooling. The coolant typically travels through internal passageways, which may involve impingement on the internal surface of a turbine component, before being ejected as film cooling. Internal cooling effects have been studied in facilities that allow measurement of heat transfer coefficients within models of the internal cooling paths, with large heat transfer coefficients generally desirable. External film cooling is typically evaluated through measurements of the adiabatic effectiveness and its effect on the external heat transfer coefficient. Efforts aimed at improving cooling are often focused on either only the internal cooling or the film cooling; however, the common coolant flow means the internal and external cooling schemes are linked and the coolant holes themselves provide another convective path for heat transfer to the coolant. Recently, measurements of overall cooling effectiveness using matched Biot number turbine component models allow evaluation of the nondimensional wall temperature achieved for the fully cooled component. However, the relative contributions of internal cooling, external cooling, and convection within the film cooling holes is not well understood. Large scale, matched Biot number experiments, complemented by CFD simulations, were performed on a fully film cooled cylindrical leading edge model to evaluate the effects of various alterations in the cooling design on the overall effectiveness. The relative influence of film cooling and cooling within the holes was evaluated by selectively disabling individual holes and quantifying how the overall effectiveness changed. Several internal impingement cooling schemes in addition to a baseline case without impingement cooling were also tested. In general, impingement cooling is shown to have a negligible influence on the overall effectiveness in the showerhead region. This indicates that the cost and pressure drop penalties for implementing impingement cooling may not be compensated by an increase in thermal performance. Instead, the internal cooling provided by convection within the holes themselves was shown, along with external film cooling, to be a dominant contribution to the overall cooling effectiveness. Indeed, the numerous holes within the showerhead region impede the ability of internal surface cooling schemes to influence the outside surface temperature. The results of this research may allow improved focus of future efforts on the forms of cooling with the greatest potential to improve cooling performance.

A two-dimensional finite-difference numerical technique is presented to determine the temperature distribution of an internally-cooled blade of radial turbine guide vanes. A simple convection cooling is assumed inside the guide vane. Such an arrangement results in relatively small cooling effectiveness at the leading edge and at the trailing edge. Heat transfer augmentation in these critical areas may be achieved by using impingement jets and film cooling. A computer program is written in Fortran IV for IBM 370/165 computer.
