Altitude pressure and temperature inlet distortion testing of the two-stage centrifugal compressor in the T800-LHT-800 engine is described. The test setup and the testing techniques are reviewed and the results of the test are presented. The generation of classical 180 degree patterns of both pressure and temperature distortion is discussed. Temperature distortion was created using a hydrogen burner system while pressure distortion was created in the classical manner, using screens. Results of both individual and combined temperature and pressure distortions in both opposed and concurrent patterns are shown.

The present paper concerns itself with the effects of total pressure (and thus velocity) distortion on performance characteristics and surge margin of centrifugal compressors. Both radial and circumferential distortions were investigated. The performance tests as well as the velocity measurements within the impeller passages were carried out with a low-speed compressor test rig with the inlet honeycomb as the distortion generators and compared with the case of “no distortion” as a datum. The results indicated that the inlet distortion exerted unfavorable influences on the efficiency and the surge margin of the given compressor, though the influence of the radial distortion was much stronger than that of the circumferential one. Various distortion indices were further examined in order to correlate the performance to the inlet distortion.

Abstract Inlet distortion has influence on the aerodynamic performance of turbomachinery such as compressors, turbines and fans. On turbochargers, bent pipes are installed around the compressor due to the spatial limitations in the engine room of the vehicle. As the result, the compressor is operated with the distorted inflow. In the low flow rate operation, the distorted inflow also affects the flow instability like stall and surge. Especially, the operation range on the low flow rate side is defined based on the flow rate where surge occurs, so it is important to investigate the effect of the distorted inflow on surge. In this study, the effect of the inlet distortion to surge phenomena has been investigated by the experiments with a transonic centrifugal compressor. A bent pipe has been installed at the upstream of the compressor to generate a distorted flow. Experiments have been also conducted under the condition that a straight pipe was installed upstream of the compressor, and unsteady measurements with high response pressure sensors and an I-type hot wire probe have been carried out to each experiments. In addition, Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and Wavelet transform have been applied to the unsteady measurement results obtained from each experiment.

Previous experimental and analytical studies conducted to compare the performance of transonic swept rotors in single stage fans have demonstrated the potential of significant improvements in both efficiency and stall margin with forward swept blading. This paper extends the assessment of the payoff derived from forward sweep with respect to aerodynamic performance and stability to multistage configurations. The experimental investigation compares, on a back-to-back test basis, two builds of an advanced good efficiency, high pressure ratio, two-stage fan configuration tested alternately with a radial and a forward swept stage 1 blade. In the two-stage evaluations, the testing was extended to include the effect on inlet flow distortion. While the common second stage among the two builds prevented the overall fan from showing clean inlet performance and stability benefits with the forward swept rotor 1, this configuration did demonstrate superior front stage efficiency and tolerance to inlet distortion. Having obtained an already low distortion sensitivity with the radial rotor 1 configuration relative to current production military fan standards, the sensitivity to inlet distortion was halved with the forward swept rotor 1 configuration. In the case of the 180-degree one-per-rev distortion pattern, the two-stage configuration was evaluated both with and without inlet guide vanes (IGVs). The presence of the inlet guide vanes had a profound impact in lowering the two stage fan’s sensitivity with inlet distortion.

Blade failure in turbomachinery is frequently caused by an excessive resonant response. Forced response of the blades originates from unsteady fluid structure interactions as conditioned in the inlet section by duct bends, struts, or inlet guide vanes. This paper presents the computational part of a research effort that focuses on the blade forced response in a centrifugal compressor. Unsteady fluid flow simulations are used to quantify the forcing function acting on the compressor blades due to inlet flow distortion. The measured inlet flow distribution is applied as inlet boundary conditions in the computation. The unsteady investigation provided the temporal evolution of the distorted flow through the compressor. The time-resolved blade pressure distribution showed the temporal evolution of the dynamic load on the blade surface caused by the inlet distortion. The results suggest that the forcing function is most sensitive in the leading edge region due to inlet angle variations. Toward the impeller stability line the increase in incidence caused separation on the suction side of the main blade and therefore considerably altered the amplitude and the phase angle of the unsteadiness. The investigation of the effect of idealizing the inlet flow distribution on the forcing function showed an increase in the peak amplitude of approximately 30% compared with the actual inlet flow distribution.

Rotating stall is a well-known aerodynamic instability in compressors that limits the operating envelope of aircraft gas turbine engines. An innovative method for delaying the most common form of rotating stall inception using an annular dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator had been proposed. A DBD plasma actuator is a simple solid-state device that converts electricity directly into flow acceleration through partial air ionization. However, the proposed concept had only been preliminarily evaluated with numerical simulations on an isolated axial rotor using a relatively basic CFD code. This paper provides both an experimental and a numerical assessment of this concept for an axial compressor stage as well as a centrifugal compressor stage, with both stages being part of a low-speed two-stage axial-centrifugal compressor test rig. The two configurations studied are the two-stage configuration with a 100 mN/m annular casing plasma actuator placed just upstream of the axial rotor leading edge (LE) and the single-stage centrifugal compressor with the same actuator placed upstream of the impeller LE. The tested configurations were simulated with a commercial RANS CFD code (ansys cfx) in which was implemented the latest engineering DBD plasma model and dynamic throttle boundary condition, using single-passage multiple blade row computational domains. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations indicate that in both types of compressors, the actuator delays the stall inception by pushing the incoming/tip clearance flow interface downstream into the blade passage. In each case, the predicted reduction in stalling mass flow matches the experimental value reasonably well.
