This paper analyzes the fundamentals of IGCC power plants where carbon dioxide produced by syngas combustion can be removed, liquefied and eventually disposed, to limit the environmental problems due to the “greenhouse effect”. To achieve this goal, a semiclosed-loop gas turbine cycle using an highly-enriched CO2 mixture as working fluid was adopted. As the oxidizer, syngas combustion utilizes oxygen produced by an air separation unit. Combustion gases mainly consist of CO2 and H2O: after expansion, heat recovery and water condensation, a part of the exhausts, highly concentrated in CO2, can be easily extracted, compressed and liquefied for storage or disposal. A detailed discussion about the configuration and the thermodynamic performance of these plants is the aim of the paper. Proper attention was paid to: (i) the modelization of the gasification section and of its integration with the power cycle, (ii) the optimization of the pressure ratio due the change of the cycle working fluid, (iii) the calculation of the power consumption of the “auxiliary” equipment, including the compression train of the separated CO2 and the air separation unit. The resulting overall efficiency is in the 38–39% range, with status-of-the-art gas turbine technology, but resorting to a substantially higher pressure ratio. The extent of modifications to the gas turbine engine, with respect to commercial units, was therefore discussed. Relevant modifications are needed, but not involving changes in the technology. A second plant scheme will be considered in the second part of the paper, using air for syngas combustion and a physical absorption process to separate CO2 from nitrogen-rich exhausts. A comparison between the two options will be addressed there.

The gas turbine engine works on the principle of the Brayton Cycle. One of the ways to improve the efficiency of the gas turbine is to make changes in the Brayton Cycle. In the present study, Brayton Cycle with intercooling, reheating and regeneration with variable temperature heat reservoirs is considered. Instead of the usual thermodynamic efficiency, the Second law efficiency, defined on the basis of lost work, has been taken as a parameter to study the deviation of the irreversible Brayton Cycle from the ideal cycle. The Second law efficiency of the Brayton Cycle has been found as a function of reheat and intercooling pressure ratios, total pressure ratio, intercooler, regenerator and reheater effectiveness, hot and cold side heat exchanger effectiveness, turbine and compressor efficiency and heating capacities of the heating fluid, the cooling fluid and the working fluid (air). The variation of the Second law efficiency with all these parameters has been presented. From the results, it can be seen that the Second law efficiency first increases and then decreases with increase in intercooling pressure ratio and increases with increase in reheating pressure ratio. The results show that the Second law efficiency is a very good indicator of the amount of irreversibility of the cycle.

Abstract Thermal power plants operating on fossil fuels emit a considerable amount of polluting gases including carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Several technologies have been developed or under development to avoid the emissions of, mainly, CO2 that are formed as a result of air-fuel combustion. While post-combustion capture methods are viable solutions for reduction of CO2 in the existing power plants, implementation of the concept of oxyfuel combustion in future power cycles appears to be a promising technique for clean power generation from fossil fuels. A novel power cycle that employs oxyfuel combustion method has been developed by NET Power. Known as the Allam cycle, it includes a turbine, an air separation unit (ASU), a combustor, a recuperator, a water separator, CO2 compression with intercooling and CO2 pump. (Over 90% of the supercritical CO2 flow is recycled back to the cycle as the working fluid, and the rest is extracted for further processing and storage. The present paper introduces a simplified thermodynamic analysis of the Allam power cycle. Analytical expressions are derived for the net power output, optimum turbine inlet temperature (TIT), and the molar flowrate of the recycled CO2 flow. The study aims to provide a theoretical framework to help understand the functional relationships between the various operating parameters of the cycle. The optimum TIT predicted by the presented expression is 1473 K which is fairly close to that reported by the cycle developers.

In Aug 2004 the Zero Emission Norwegian Gas (ZENG) project team completed Phase-1: Concept and Feasibility Study for a 40 MW Pilot & Demonstration (P&D) Plant, that is proposed will be located at the Energy Park, Risavika, near Stavanger in South Norway during 2008. The power plant cycle is based upon implementation of the natural gas (NG) and oxygen fueled Gas Generator (GG) (1500°F/1500 psi) successfully demonstrated by Clean Energy Systems (CES) Inc. The GG operations was originally tested in Feb 2003 and is currently (Feb 2005) undergoing extensive commissioning at the CES 5MW Kimberlina Test Plant, near Bakersfield, California. The ZENG P&D Plant will be an important next step in an accelerating path towards demonstrating large-scale (+200 MW) commercial implementation of zero-emission power plants before the end of this decade. However, development work also entails having a detailed commercial understanding of the techno-economic potential for such power plant cycles: specifically in an environment where the future penalty for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions remains uncertain. Work done in dialogue with suppliers during ZENG Project Phase-1 has cost-estimated all major plant components to a level commensurate with engineering pre-screening. The study has also identified several features of the proposed power plant that has enabled improvements in thermodynamic efficiency from 37% up to present level of 44–46% without compromising the criteria of implementation using “near-term” available technology. The work has investigated: i. Integration between the cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) and the power plant. ii. Use of gas turbine technology for the intermediate pressure (IP) steam turbine. iii. Optimal use of turbo-expanders and heat-exchangers to mitigate the power consumption incurred for oxygen production. iv. Improved condenser design for more efficient CO2 separation and removal. v. Sensitivity of process design criteria to “small” variations in modeling of the physical properties for CO2/steam working fluid near saturation. vi. Use of a second “conventional” pure steam Rankine bottoming cycle. In future analysis, not all these improvements need necessarily be seen to be cost-effective when taking into account total P&D program objectives; thermodynamic efficiency, power plant investment, operations and maintenance cost. However, they do represent important considerations towards “total” optimization when designing the P&D Plant. We observe that Project Phase-2: Pre-Engineering & Qualification should focus on optimization of plant size with respect to total capital investment (CAPEX); and identification of further opportunities for extended technology migration from gas turbine environment that could also permit raised turbine inlet temperatures (TIT).

The commercialization of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Power has been aided by concepts involving the integration of a cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) with the gas turbine combined-cycle module. Other processes, such as coal-based ironmaking and combined power/industrial gas production facilities, can also benefit from the integration. It is known and now widely accepted that an ASU designed for “elevated pressure” service and optimally integrated with the gas turbine can increase overall IGCC power output, increase overall efficiency, and decrease the net cost of power generation when compared to nonintegrated facilities employing low-pressure ASUs. The specific gas turbine, gasification technology, NOx emission specification, and other site specific factors determine the optimal degree of compressed air and nitrogen stream integration. Continuing advancements in both air separation and gas turbine technologies offer new integration opportunities to improve performance and reduce costs. This paper reviews basic integration principles and describes next-generation concepts based on advanced high pressure ratio gas turbines, Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycles and integration of compression heat and refrigeration sources from the ASU. Operability issues associated with integration are reviewed and control measures are described for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of these facilities.

The main performance features of a semiclosed cycle gas turbine with carbon dioxide-argon working fluid are described here. This machine is designed to employ coal synthetic gas fuel and to produce no emissions. The present paper outlines three tasks carried out. Firstly the selection of main engine variables, mainly pressure and temperature ratios. Then a sizing exercise is carried out where many details of its physical appearance are outlined. Finally the off-design performance of the engine is predicted. This two spool gas turbine is purpose built for the working fluid, so its physical characteristics reflect this requirement. The cycle is designed with a turbine entry temperature of 1650 K and the optimum pressure ratio is found to be around 60. Two major alternatives are examined, the simple and the precooled cycle. A large amount of nitrogen is produced by the air separation plant associated with this gas turbine and the coal gasifier. An investigation has been made on how to use this nitrogen to improve the performance of the engine by precooling the compressor, cooling the turbine nozzle guide vanes and using it to cool the delivery of the low pressure compressor. The efficiencies of the whole plant have been computed, taking into account the energy requirements of the gasifier and the need to dispose of the excess carbon dioxide. Hence the overall efficiencies indicated here are of the order of 40 percent. This is a low efficiency by current standards, but the fuel employed is coal and no emissions are produced.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the performance of a semi-closed oxy-fuel combustion combined cycle (SCOC-CC) and its power penalties. The power penalties are associated with CO2 compression and high-pressure oxygen production in the air separation unit (ASU). The paper discusses three different methods for high pressure oxygen (O2) production. Method 1 is producing O2 directly at high pressure by compressing the air before the air separation takes place. Method 2 is producing O2 at low pressure and then compressing the separated O2 to the desired pressure with a compressor. Method 3 is alike the second method, except that the separated liquid O2 is pressurized with a liquid oxygen pump to the desired pressure. The studied SCOC-CC is a dual-pressure level steam cycle due to its comparable efficiency with three pressure level steam cycle and less complexity. The SCOC-CC, ASU and CO2 compression train are modeled with the commercial heat and mass balance software IPSEpro. The paper analyzed the SCOC-CC performance at different combustion outlet temperatures and pressure ratios. The combustion outlet temperature (COT) varied from 1200 °C to 1550 °C and the pressure ratio varied from 25 to 45. The study is concerned with mid-sized SCOC-CC with a net power output 100 MW. The calculations were performed at the selected design point which was at 1400°C and pressure ratio at 37. The calculated power consumption of the O2 separation at a purity of 95 % was 719 kJ/kgO2. The power consumption for pressurizing the separated O2 (method 2) was 345 kJ/kgO2 whereas it was 4.4 kJ/kgO2 for pumping liquid O2 to the required pressure (method 3). The calculated power consumption for pressurizing and pumping the CO2-enriched stream was 323 kJ/kgCO2. The SCOC-CC gross efficiency was 57.6 %. The SCOC-CC net efficiency at method 2 for air separation was 46.7 %. The gross efficiency was reduced by 9 % due to ASU and other 2 % due to CO2 compression. The SCOC-CC net efficiency at method 3 of the air separation was 49.6 %. The ASU reduced the gross efficiency by 6 % and additional 2 % by CO2 compression. Using method 3 for air separation gave a 3 % gain in cycle efficiency.
