1/F Noise-Fluctuated Cozy Lighting System for Concentration Improvement

The power spectrum of human heart rate measured over 24 h exhibits “power-law” 1/f alpha-type spectral behavior with alpha approximately 1. This may be one of the reasons why 1/f noise help people make relaxed, or feel comfortable. As a result, people feel relaxed by looking at a candle light, listening to the sound of ocean wave, or feeling the breezing wind because all of these natural phenomenon is based on the 1/f noise fluctuation. Considering this feature, a technical approach of 1/f noise fluctuation has been applied to various industry products, ranging from light illumination, fan control, temperature control, etc. to implement cozy products. For example, one typical example would be a lighting product mimicking a candle light, which illuminate just like a true candle. A candle light provides a cozy atmosphere to relax our mind by forgetting severe business issues, which is because of the nature of 1/f noise fluctuation as mentioned above. However, it is not suitable to do something important by concentration under a candle light because of the changes of brightness and the blinking nature of candles. This study designs and develops 1/f noise-fluctuated cozy lighting system with stable brightness and chromaticity without blinking so that people unconsciously feel relaxed under this lighting system without noticing the 1/f noise fluctuation and concentrate on work or operation. In order to implement this lighting system, combination of two types of white LED lights were used. White LED lights are manufactured by the combination of different colors having different spectrum. For example, Blue with YAG fluorophore, Blue with RG fluorophore, UV with RGB fluorophore, etc. provide all white LED lights. This means that it is possible to make two different types of LED lights which have the same white color with different combination of spectrums. If the two white colors of the two LED are the same, nobody cannot notice when the two LEDs are switching over each other, periodically or randomly. People only think that the white color is constantly provided by the white LED light. However, if the switching is based on 1/f noise fluctuation, some positive effect can be expected under this lighting system. This paper shows the overview of the idea of 1/f noise-fluctuated cozy lighting system, and then presents the two basic challenges of the idea towards concentration improvement; Combination of two types of white LED and 1/f noise-fluctuated switching system. These two challenges are presented using a prototype lighting systems developed in this study.

The article presents the basic conceptual assumptions of a photobioreactor with a complementary lighting system. The cylindrical bioreactor has three independent, interconnected, and fully controlled lighting systems. A characteristic feature is the combination of the lighting system with the measurement of photosynthetically active PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) and the optical density of the culture medium. The entire lighting system is based on RGBW (“red, green, blue, white”) LED and RBG (“red, green, blue”) LEDs. The pilot study was conducted on a simplified prototype of a photobioreactor designed for the distribution and optimization of light in algae cultures designed for energy purposes. The study was carried out on microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris BA0002a from the collection of marine algae cultures.

In order to intelligentize the LED lighting systems,this system adopts the Freescale series MC9S08AC16 as the controller, senses the light environment induced by the photoresistor and uses the SS-101 pyroelectric infrared sensors to sense the presence of people. In addition, it uses LM3404 chip to drive LED headlamp unit and by changing the duty cycle of PWM to achieve the switches and automatic adjustment of brightness of LED lights. Experiments show that the light source brightness provided by this system is stable and reliable and the combination of infrared sensing technology and PWM technology achieves the intelligence of LED lights. Moreover, it has high application value.

Currently, the lighting system for corridors and public areas in high-rise apartment buildings uses LED systems to replace Sodium lamps, halogen lamps... Although LED lights have been put into use, there are economic benefits such as lower power consumption and longer durability (life expectancy) according to the manufacturer's explanation. But in practice, the LEDs are used with pulse sources with operating voltages from 170VAC to 240VAC and continuous operation time without rest, often resulting in power loss due to overload or the life of the capacitor is reduced. Therefore, in order to improve the life span and efficiently use the energy source, the researches have studied the switching process control such as [1], [2], [3], [5]. This paper presents a new research direction Automatically shedding loads for lighting systems in corridors and public areas in high-rise apartment buildings for greater efficiency.

Government attaches great importance to energy saving issue has caused. Library as densely populated public places, its energy consumption is 5 to 15 times the average residential. Many factors involved in libraries energy saving, such as air-conditioning systems, lighting systems and other electrical systems. The library has great potential for energy saving. This paper studies how to apply the smart lights technology in the library energy-saving. Based on the analysis of existing library monitoring system, we propose a possible smart lights method which will be used in the library energy-saving. Effective methods and strategies of smart light energy-saving were researched. Smart LED lights and wisdom lamp holders, hardware and software are designed and implemented which was used in the library energy-saving. The smart LED lights were used in library study room lighting reconstruction. Practice shows that the energy-saving of new lighting system effective. Theoretically for the new technology could bring more than 30% of the energy-saving effect.

In lighting design, the main concept is to achieve a healthy environment, which addresses energy efficiency, cost, maintenance, and quality. User-friendly lighting systems shall be adopted to architecture and interior architecture. User control over the lighting system is important, by dimming or increasing light output, by changing the colour of the light sets the inner atmosphere and affects user mood. Standards and codes on lighting shall also be evaluated by means of these topics. The paper aims to analyse how the luminous environment is affective on the perceived environment. Hence, a series of experimental studies and recent research will be evaluated in regard to understanding and designing luminous environment.

Artificial lighting systems are used in commercial greenhouses to ensure year-round yields. Current Light Emitting Diode (LED) technologies improved the system efficiency. Nevertheless, having artificial lighting systems extended for hectares with power densities over 50W/m2 causes energy and power demand of greenhouses to be really significant. The present paper introduces an innovative supervisory and predictive control strategy to optimize the energy performance of the artificial lights of greenhouses. The controller has been implemented in a multi-span plastic greenhouse located in North Italy. The proposed control strategy has been tested on a greenhouse of 1 hectare with a lighting system with a nominal power density of 50 Wm−2 requiring an overall power supply of 1 MW for a period of 80 days. The results have been compared with the data coming from another greenhouse of 1 hectare in the same conditions implementing a state-of-the-art strategy for artificial lighting control. Results outlines that potential 19.4% cost savings are achievable. Moreover, the algorithm can be used to transform the greenhouse in a viable source of energy flexibility for grid reliability.

The technological innovation in the field of lighting and the need to reduce energy consumption connected to public lighting are leading many municipalities to undertake the renewal of public lighting systems, by replacing the existing luminaires with LED technologies. This renovation process is usually aimed at increasing energy efficiency and reducing maintenance costs, whist improving the lighting performance. To achieve these results, the new luminaires are often characterised by a luminous flux distribution much more downward oriented, which may remarkably influence and alter the perception of the night image of the sites. In this study the implications of the renovation of public lighting systems in terms of lighting and energy performance as well as the effects relating to the alteration of the night image, in historical contexts characterized by significant landscape value, are analysed. Results, along with demonstrating the positive effect that more sustainable and energy efficient lighting systems may have on the lighting performance and energy consumptions of public lighting systems, evidences the impact they may have on the alteration of the nocturnal image.

Indoor lighting is facing a massive retrofit to LED lighting. Research is needed to assess whether LED-based lighting can promote energy efficiency, boost visual comfort and support biological functions. This field study considered the lighting of four identical classrooms in an upper secondary school in Helsingborg, Sweden. Two classrooms were fitted with state-of-the-art ceiling pendants containing T5 fluorescent tubes and that had a direct/indirect light distribution (the control rooms). The other two classrooms were fitted with an experimental LED indirect lighting system (the experimental rooms). In the classrooms, 72 students aged 17–18 years performed their usual educational activities over a whole academic year. The light environment, electricity consumption, and students’ mood, light perception and saliva cortisol concentration were monitored. The two lighting systems produced only marginal differences. Overall, the experimental rooms were slightly preferred but achieved only small energy savings due to high parasitic losses.

Adolescent asthma is still a major problem with poor adherence to treatment. Globally, adolescents are devoted users of smartphone technologies and app use in asthma self-management may improve adherence. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the feasibility and efficacy of mobile technology in improving asthma outcomes in adolescents. We conducted an extensive review of the peer-review literature of studies with populations consisting of children and adolescents under 18 years in seven bibliographic databases and Google Scholar. All study designs were considered. Quality assessment of included studies were independently assessed and reported. The search identified 291 articles; of the 16 eligible full-text papers, 8 met the review criteria, reporting two interventional, two qualitative and four observational studies. Samples ranged from 12 to 21 participants. Heterogeneity related to study design and the methods of the included studies prevented meta-analysis. Nevertheless, the intervention studies reported a positive effect of smartphone apps on asthma control, medication adherence and self-efficacy. Smartphone apps may be an effective asthma control tool especially among adolescents who are major users of smartphones; however, conclusions are limited by a lack of controlled trials and adequate sample sizes.

This research develops and implements methods for calculating lighting systems for classrooms in the Khairul Ummah Boarding School. The lumen is used to determine the number of luminaires needed to improve lighting quality following SNI 6197:2011. The number of luminaires obtained from this study was entered into the DIALux Evo 8.1 software. The results obtained of this study indicate that the lighting in the classroom at Khairul Ummah Boarding School didn’t reach the recommended standard, the direct measurement results of the average lighting level of class A was 10.79 lux, while the class X-IPA-3 was 11.66 lux. To improve this condition, class A requires 15 luminaires, and X-IPA-3 requires 12 luminaires. The difference in the results obtained from the two calculations for class A is 0.6%, and X-IPA-3 is 3.4%. Investment costs are needed to improve the lighting system in these classes worth Rp.2,700,000.00 to provide 27 lamps.
