Finite Element Model of Schallamach Waves in Belt-Drives

Abstract The objective of this study is to investigate if a high-fidelity finite element model can predict the Schallamach wave phenomenon in belt-drives. To this end a computational model which closely mimics a recently developed one-pulley experimental belt-drive apparatus, was created. The dynamic response predicted by the model is compared to the experiment results in order to demonstrate that the model can be used to predict the Schallamach wave phenomenon. Furthermore, the model is used to investigate the roles of Coulomb friction coefficient, adhesion, and torque direction on stick-slip instability effects.

An asperity spring friction model that uses a variable anchor point spring along with a velocity dependent force is presented. The model is incorporated in an explicit timeintegration finite element code. The friction model is used along with a penalty-based normal contact model to simulate the dynamic response of a two-pulley belt-drive system. It is shown that the present friction model accurately captures the stick-slip behavior between the belt and the pulleys using a much larger time-step than a pure velocity-dependent approximate Coulomb friction model.

In this work, the nonlinear coupled dynamics of a sandwich structure with hexagonal honeycomb core are characterized in terms of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition modes. A high fidelity nonlinear finite element model is derived to describe geometric nonlinearity and displacement and rotation fields that govern the coupled dynamics. Contrary to equivalent continuum models used to predict vibration properties of lattice and sandwich structures, a high fidelity finite element model allows for a quite detailed description of the distributed complicated geometric nonlinearity of the core. It was found that the free dynamics excited by a blast load and the forced dynamics excited by a harmonic force posses POD modes which are localized in space and time. The processing of the simulated dynamics by the Time Discrete Proper Transform forms a means to study the nonlinear coupled dynamics of sandwich structures in the context of nonlinear normal modes of vibration and reduced order models.

Prefabrication of composites beam reduces the construction time and makes them easily to be assembled, deconstructed, and partially repaired. The use of high-strength frictional bolt shear connectors can greatly enhance the sustainability of infrastructure. However, researches about the concrete-steel friction behavior are very limited. To provide a contribution to this area, 21 tests were conducted to measure the friction coefficient and slip stiffness with different concrete strength, steel strength, and surface treatment of steel. An effective finite element model was developed to investigate the ultimate bearing capacity and load-slip characteristics of bolt shear connection. The accuracy of the proposed finite element model is validated by the tests in this paper. The results demonstrate a positive correlation between concrete strength and friction coefficient and better performance of shot-blasted steel. It is also proved that high-strength frictional bolt has a 30% lower bearing capacity but better strength reserve and antiuplifting than the headed stud.

A perturbation method is presented for use in analyzing unsteady belt-drive operation. The method relies on the important assumption that for operating states close to steady operation, the friction state (i.e., whether the belt is creeping or sticking at any location on the pulley) is similar to that of the well-known steady solution in which a lone stick arc precedes a lone slip arc (Johnson, K. L., 1985, Contact Mechanics, Cambridge U.P., London, Chap. 8; Smith, D. P., 1999, Tribol. Int., 31(8), pp. 465–477). This assumption, however, is not used to determine the friction force distribution, and, in fact, the friction forces in the stick zone are found to be nonzero, in direct contrast to the steady solution. The perturbation analysis is used to derive expressions for the span tensions, the pulley tension distributions, the contact forces between the belt and the pulleys, and the angular velocity of the driven pulleys. Validity criteria are developed which determine bounds on the operation state for which the assumed friction state is upheld. Verification of response quantities from the perturbation solution is accomplished through comparison to quantities predicted by an in-house dynamic finite element model and excellent agreement is found. Additionally, the finite element model is used to verify the key assumption that a lone slip arc precedes a lone stick arc.

Abstract The member stiffness and pressure distribution in a bolted joint is significantly influenced by the contact area of the mechanical interface under a prescribed preload force. This research explores the influence of as-built surface profiles for nominally flat interfaces of a C-Beam assembly with two well-defined contact regions. A high-fidelity finite element model is created such that the model uncertainty is minimized by updating and calibrating the piece parts prior to the preload assembly procedure. The model is then assembled and preloaded to evaluate the contact stresses and contact area for both nominally flat and perturbed non-flat surfaces based on three-dimensional surface topography measurements. The predicted pressures are validated with digitized pressure-sensitive film measurements. The high-fidelity modeling reveals how the compliance and thickness of the pressure-sensitive film alter the measured pressures, leading to incorrect evaluations of the stresses and contact area in the joint. The resulting low-level dynamic behavior of the preloaded assembly is shown to be sensitive to the true contact area by linearizing the nonlinear finite element model about the preloaded equilibrium and performing a computational modal analysis. The resonant frequencies are validated with experimental measurements to demonstrate the effect of the contact area on the modal characteristics of the bolted assembly. Vibration modes and loading patterns exhibit varying levels of sensitivity to the contact area in the joint, leading to an improved physical understanding of the influence of contact mechanics on the low-level linear vibration modes of jointed assemblies.

Sheet metal deep-draw die is primarily constructed with draw bead, which is then modified based on trial and error to obtain a successful forming without splitting. This work aims at a robust design of forming die using numerical analysis and the Taguchi method. A three dimensional elastoplastic finite element model of a sheet metal forming process of SPCEN steel has been successfully developed using the material flow stress obtained from the modified Erichsen cup test. The model was validated with the actual forming experiment and the results agreed well. The influence of draw bead parameters on splitting and thinning distributions were examined using the Taguchi method. Four parameters, namely the friction coefficient, draw bead height, radius and shoulder radius were investigated. The Taguchi main effect analysis and ANOVA results show that the height and shoulder radius of the draw bead are the most important factor influencing the thinning distribution. Applying the Taguchi method and using the minimum thinning percentage as the design criteria, the optimum die design was identified as height, radius, shoulder radius and the friction coefficient of 4, 8, 8 mm and 0.125 respectively. The verified finite element model using the optimum die design was conducted. The predicted Taguchi response was within 5.9% from finite element analysis prediction. The improvement in the reduction of thinning percentage was 22.35%.

The objective of this study is to develop models to investigate the effects of contaminants (debris denting process) in heavily loaded rolling and sliding contacts. A dynamic time dependent finite element model (FEM) was developed to determine the elastic-plastic deformation and contact force generated between the mating surfaces and a spherical debris as debris passes through the contact region. The FEA model was used to obtain the effects of various parameters such as debris sizes, material properties, friction coefficients, applied loads, and surface speeds on the elastic-plastic deformation and contact force of the system. The FEM was used to predict debris and mating surfaces deformations as a function of debris size, material properties, friction coefficient, applied load, and surface speed. Using the FEM, a parametric study demonstrated that material properties (i.e., modulus of elasticity, yield strength, ultimate strength and Poisson’s ratio) and friction coefficients play significant roles on the height and width of dents on the mating surfaces. For lower friction coefficients μd<0.3 the debris and mating surfaces slip more easily relative to one another and therefore the debris has lower aspect ratio. As friction coefficient is increased the debris and mating surfaces stick to one another and therefore the debris deforms less and has higher aspect ratio. The results indicate that the pressure generated between the debris and mating surfaces is high enough to plastically deform the debris and mating surfaces and cause a permanent dent on the surfaces and cause residual stresses around the dent. Based on the FEM results, a dry contact model (DCM) was developed to allow similar analyses as the FEM, however, in significantly shorter computational time.
