HPC FEM Calculations for Damping Estimation of Bladed Disk With Dry-Friction Contacts

Abstract The experimental set-up for studying dynamical behaviour of the bladed wheel with pre-stressed dry-friction contacts in tie-bosses was built. The numerical solution of the turbine bladed wheel with tie-bosses based on 3D finite element method with surface to surface dry friction contact model is proposed. Comparison of experimental and numerical results of dynamical behaviour and damping estimation of our bladed wheel design yielded a reasonable agreement. Due to dry friction contacts and non-linear solution of 3D FE model it, however, leads to HPC computations and long computation times. The contribution deals with description of proposed computational strategy for damping evaluation and achieved results, too.

Interblade contacts and damping evaluation of the turbine bladed wheel with prestressed dry friction contacts are solved by the 3D finite element method with the surface-to-surface dry friction contact model. This makes it possible to model the space relative motions of contact pairs that occur during blade vibrations. To experimentally validate the model, a physical model of the bladed wheel with tie-boss couplings was built and tested. HPC computation with a proposed strategy was used to lower the computational time of the nonlinear solution of the wheel resonant attenuation used for damping estimation. Comparison of experimental and numerical results of damping estimation yields a very good agreement.

AbstractA large number of landslides occur in North-Eastern Italy during every rainy period due to the particular hydrogeological conditions of this area. Even if there are no casualties, the economic losses are often significant, and municipalities frequently do not have sufficient financial resources to repair the damage and stabilize all the unstable slopes. In this regard, the research for more economically sustainable solutions is a crucial challenge. Floating composite anchors are an innovative and low-cost technique set up for slope stabilization: it consists in the use of passive sub-horizontal reinforcements, obtained by coupling a traditional self-drilling bar with some tendons cemented inside it. This work concerns the application of this technique according to the observational method described within the Italian and European technical codes and mainly recommended for the design of geotechnical works, especially when performed in highly uncertain site conditions. The observational method prescribes designing an intervention and, at the same time, using a monitoring system in order to correct and adapt the project during realization of the works on the basis of new data acquired while on site. The case study is the landslide of Cischele, a medium landslide which occurred in 2010 after an exceptional heavy rainy period. In 2015, some floating composite anchors were installed to slow down the movement, even if, due to a limited budget, they were not enough to ensure the complete stabilization of the slope. Thanks to a monitoring system installed in the meantime, it is now possible to have a comparison between the site conditions before and after the intervention. This allows the evaluation of benefits achieved with the reinforcements and, at the same time, the assessment of additional improvements. Two stabilization scenarios are studied through an FE model: the first includes the stabilization system built in 2015, while the second evaluates a new solution proposed to further increase the slope stability.

A 2-D finite element model of human cochlea is established in this paper. This model includes the structure of oval window, round window, basilar membrane and cochlear duct which is filled with fluid. The basilar membrane responses are calculated with sound input on the oval window membrane. In order to study the effects of helicotrema on basilar membrane response, three different helicotrema dimensions are set up in the FE model. A two-way fluid-structure interaction numerical method is used to compute the responses in the cochlea. The influence of the helicotrema is acquired and the frequency selectivity of the basilar membrane motion along the cochlear duct is predicted. These results agree with the experiments and indicate much better results are obtained with appropriate helicotrema size.

Friction dampers are installed underneath the blade platforms to improve the reliability. Because of centrifugal forces the dampers are pressed onto the platforms. Due to dry friction and the relative motion between blades and dampers, energy is dissipated, which results in a reduction of blade vibration amplitudes. The geometry of the contact is in many cases like a Hertzian line contact. A three-dimensional motion of the blades results in a two-dimensional motion of one contact line of the friction dampers in the contact plane. An experiment with one friction damper between two blades is used to verify the two-dimensional contact model including microslip. By optimizing the friction dampers masses, the best damping effects are obtained. Finally, different methods are shown to calculate the envelope of a three-dimensional response of a detuned bladed disk assembly (V84.3-4th-stage turbine blade) with friction dampers.

Abstract A finite-element stress analysis of a one-piece, integrated, all-composite shaft and coupling is presented. In addition to a brief discussion of design-driving parameters, some limitations of the analytical techniques used for design development are described. The 3D finite-element method (FEM) was then used to evaluate critical stresses and strains experienced by the shaft coupling. A comparison of the results from the finite-element analysis and those from static bending, axial, and torsional tests conducted on these prototype shafts yielded excellent correlation. Some important considerations in the development of the FE model and the correlation of results with tests, especially in the design of composite materials, are addressed.

Blow forming process of plastic sheets is simple and easy to realize, thus, it is widely used for plastic thin-wall parts. In the practical production, an effective method is needed for the preliminary set-up of process parameters in order to achieve accurate control of thickness distribution. Thus, a finite element method (FEM) code is used to simulate blow forming process. For better description of complex material theological characteristics, a physically based viscoelastic model (VUMAT forms Buckley model) to model the complex constitutive behavior is used. Nonlinear FE analyses using ABAQUS were carried out to simulate the blow forming process of plastic cups. The actual values at different locations show a satisfactory agreement with the simulation results: as a matter of fact the error along the cell mid-section did not exceed 0.02 mm on average, corresponding to 5% of the initial thickness, thus the FE model this paper can meet the requirements of the engineering practice.

Abstract Dynamic response of a gear pair subjected to input and output torque or velocity fluctuations is examined analytically. Such motions are commonly observed in various powertrain systems and identified as gear rattle or hammering motions with severe noise and durability consequences. A reduced-order torsional model is proposed along with a computationally efficient piecewise-linear solution methodology to characterize the system response including its sensitivity to excitation parameters. Validity of the proposed model is established through comparisons of its predictions to measurements from a gear rattle experimental set-up. A wide array of nonlinear behavior is demonstrated through presentation of periodic and chaotic responses in the forms of phase plots, Poincaré maps, and bifurcation diagrams. The severity of the resultant impacts on the noise outcome is also assessed through a rattle severity index defined by using the impact velocities.

Titanium forging has been encountering a growing interest in the scientific and industrial communities because of the distinct advantages it provides with respect to machining, in terms of both mechanical properties of the product and material waste, thus significantly reducing the Buy to Fly ratio. In the paper, a numerical FE model, based on a tri-coupled approach and able to predict the microstructural evolutions of the workpiece during the process, is developed and set up. Calculated results are compared to experiments for a few industrial case studies. The final phases distribution in the forged parts is experimentally measured and compared to the FE model output finding satisfying overlapping.

The steady state response of a model of circular bladed disk with imperfection is investigated. Disk imperfection results from additional two groups of damping heads fixed on opposite ends of one diameter. These damping heads are introduced into the computing model as additional point mass, damping and stiffness. Such type of imperfection causes the bifurcation of double eigenfrequencies into pairs of close eigenfrequencies. The effect of imperfection is examined both numerically on three-dimensional nonrotating FE-model and analytically on a simplified split 2DOF model of rotating disk excited by single point harmonic force. Nonlinear friction connection is analyzed and equivalent linear damping coefficient is derived and used in the calculation procedure. It is shown that nonproportional distribution of damping strongly influences the high of resonance peaks. Some examples of response curves illustrate the dynamic properties of stationary and rotating disks with mass-damping-stiffness imperfection.
