The structural and thermophysical characteristics of an Ni-rich NiTi alloy rod produced on a laboratory scale was studied. The soak temperature of the solution heat-treatment steps above 850 °C taking advantage of the precipitate dissolution to provide a matrix homogenization, but it takes many hours (24 to 48) when used without thermomechanical steps. Therefore, the suitable reheating to apply between the forging process steps is very important, because the product’s structural characteristics are dependent on the thermomechanical processing history, and the time required to expose the material to high temperatures during the processing is reduced. The structural characteristics were investigated after solution heat treatment at 900 °C and 950 °C for 120 min, and these heat treatments were compared with as-forged sample structural characteristics (one hot deformation step after 800 °C for a 30 min reheat stage). The phase-transformation temperatures were analyzed through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the structural characterization was performed through synchrotron radiation-based X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) at room temperature. It was observed that the solution heat treatment at 950 °C/120 min presents a lower martensitic reversion finish temperature (Af); the matrix was fully austenitic; and it had a hardness of about 226 HV. Thus, this condition is the most suitable for the reheating stages between the hot forging-process steps to be applied to this alloy to produce materials that can display a superelasticity effect, for applications such as crack sensors or orthodontic archwires.

Abstract Large forgings can be applied to manufacture key parts in large equipment used in petrochemical, shipbuilding, aerospace, nuclear industry. At present, the size of hot large forgings is mainly measured by hand-hold calipers or mechanical gauges through contact measurement method. In order to realize non-contact length measurement of hot large forgings, a novel method for measuring the length of hot large forgings based on machine vision system is proposed. Firstly, the light strips are recognized according to the continuous characteristics of the light stripes in the image acquired by the hot forging dimension measurement system based on machine vision. Secondly, using the sub-pixel edge of light strips acquired by the improved sub-pixel edge detection algorithm, the three-dimension (3D) points of each edge of light strips are calculated, respectively. Lastly, the two-dimensional (2D) points projected from the 3D points onto the fitted plane are used for curve fitting, and the edge of hot part corresponding to each light strip edge is calculated according to the curvature of the fitted curves. The distance between the start point and the edge point on each light strip edge is considered as the length of hot forging at the corresponding edge of each light strip. The length measurement experiment shows that the method can be used to calculate the length of hot large forgings. The measurement error of the length measurement system when measuring part at room temperature is 0.547%. The time for measuring the length of hot forging is 6.8s.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of a 12% Cr steel where a significant increase in Charpy impact toughness and a slight decrease in ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) from 70 °C to 65 °C were obtained through thermo-mechanical processing, including interim hot forging at 1050 °C with long-term annealing at 1000 °C, as compared with conventional heat treatment. At lower temperatures ranging from −20 °C to 25 °C, the value of impact toughness comprised ~40 J cm−2 in the present 12% Cr steel subjected to thermo-mechanical processing. The amount of δ-ferrite decreased to 3.8%, whereas the size of prior austenite grains did not change and comprised about 40–50 μm. The boundaries between δ-ferrite and martensitic laths were decorated by continuous chains of Cr- and W-rich carbides. M23C6 carbides also precipitated along the boundaries of prior austenite grains, packets, blocks and martensitic laths. Thermo-mechanical processing increased the mean size of M23C6 carbides and decreased their number particle densities along the lath boundaries. Moreover, the precipitation of a high number of non-equilibrium V-rich MX particles was induced by hot forging and long-term normalizing at 1000 °C for 24 h.

Open-die forging is a critical step in the manufacture of large numbers of components used in the transportation and energy industries. Dynamic recrystallization, dynamic transformation, and dynamic precipitation take place during the hot deformation process and significantly affect microstructure conditioning, which ultimately influences the service properties of the component. In the present work, using a Gleeble 3800 thermomechanical simulator, the open-die forging of a large-size ingot made of a modified AISI 6140 medium carbon high-strength steel is investigated. Deformation temperatures ranging from 950°C to 1,250°C and strain rates ranging from 0.01 to 1 s−1, representative of the actual process, are considered in the analysis. The generated true stress–true strain curves are used as a basis for the development of a constitutive model predicting the occurrence of softening and strengthening phenomena as a function of thermomechanical conditions. The corresponding activation energy is determined to be about 374 kJ mol−1 and is compared against the values reported in the literature for other high-strength steels. Dynamic recrystallization kinetics is studied using the t50 model, and the influence of temperature and strain rate is quantified and discussed. The interaction between dynamic precipitation and dynamic recrystallization is discussed, and the deformation conditions under which such interactions occur are determined. The thermomechanical results are validated by microstructure examination, including laser confocal microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The present study focuses on reproducing the deformation cycle applied during the open-die forging process of a vanadium-containing high-strength steel used in the industry with special attention to the interaction between dynamic recrystallization and precipitation processes.

Hot work tool steels (HWS) are widely used for high performance components as dies and molds in hot forging processes, where extreme process-related mechanical and thermal loads limit tool life. With the functionalizing and modification of tool surfaces with tailored surfaces, a promising approach is given to provide material flow control resulting in the efficient die filling of cavities while reducing the process forces. In terms of fatigue properties, the influence of surface modifications on surface integrity is insufficiently studied. Therefore, the potential of the machining processes of high-feed milling, micromilling and grinding with regard to the implications on the fatigue strength of components made of HWS (AISI H11) hardened to 50 ± 1 HRC was investigated. For this purpose, the machined surfaces were characterized in terms of surface topography and residual stress state to determine the surface integrity. In order to analyze the resulting fatigue behavior as a result of the machining processes, a rotating bending test was performed. The fracture surfaces were investigated using fractographic analysis to define the initiation area and to identify the source of failure. The investigations showed a significant influence of the machining-induced surface integrity and, in particular, the induced residual stress state on the fatigue properties of components made of HWS.

The article performs an analysis of the durability of punches applied in the process of producing a valve forging from chromium-nickel steel. A forging of this type is made in two operations: coextrusion of a long shank, followed by finishing forging in closed dies of the valve head. The product obtained in this way (after other additional finishing procedures) constitutes the key element of the combustion engine (resistant to high pressures and temperatures) in motor trucks. Unfortunately, a significant problem in this production process is a relatively low durability of the forging tools, especially the punch used in the second forging operation. The key element at this stage, deciding about the punch’s further operation, is the area of the so-called “calotte”. The short-term life of the tools results from very hard performance conditions present during the forging process (periodical high mechanical and thermal loads, long path of friction). The latter cause intensive abrasive wear as well as high adhesion of the forging material to the tool surface. Based on the performed studies, including the following: technology analysis, numerical modelling, macro analyses combined with 3D scanning of tool sections as well as microstructural tests and hardness measurements, it was established that it is crucial to properly select the process parameters (charge and tool temperature, tribological conditions), as even slight changes introduced into them significantly affect the operation time of the forging tools. Mastering and proper implementation of the analyzed forging technology requires numerous further studies and tests, which will enable its perfection and thus increase the durability of the tools as well as the quality of the produced items.
