Optimal Control of a Hydrostatic Wind Turbine Drivetrain for Efficiency Improvements

To increase productivity of a wind power plant, the overall loss of its drivetrain should be minimized. For hydrostatic transmission wind turbine (HTSWT), aerodynamic efficiency of the rotor and the hydrostatic efficiency of pump and motor determine the overall loss. In this study, optimal control theory is utilized to develop a control law that minimizes the overall loss. A nonlinear model is considered for the drivetrain and a performance index (PI) is defined for the overall loss subject to system constraints which were then used to derive the optimal control law based on Pontryagin Minimum Principle (PMP),. Simulation results verified that the controller was able to maximize the drive-train efficiency. At very low wind speed, a trade-off is observed between aerodynamic and hydrostatic efficiency. For higher wind speed where the hydrostatic efficiency asymptotically reaches its maximum efficiency maximum output power coincided with maximum power point tracking of input wind power.

This study is aimed to optimize the conversion of kinetic wind energy into electrical energy. Wind energy is a sustainable energy that is preferred to generate electricity for its low generation cost and low CO2 emissions. The considerations of physical principles of a horizontal axis wind turbine were involved in the study. Controlling of the blade angle deviation and the turbine rotation direction was also considered. For this purpose, a complete wind turbine system was setup by using the computerized simulation software (PSCAD). The system was running at five different cases with different wind speeds and different angles of the blade. The system was successfully generating a maximum output power from the wind turbine based on the changing of the deflection angle of the blade. Also the system would shut down if there were no matching between the wind speed and its direction with the angle of the blade.

A prototype of a wind power plant had been created using a ventilator  as a generator spiner. This power plant utilizes wind speed as its propulsion. Electricity generated in the DC voltage form between 0 volts up to 7.46 volts. The MT3608 module is used to stabilize and raise the voltage installed in the input and output of the charging circuit. For instrument testing, the wind speed on 0 m/s up to 6 m/s interval used. Maximum output of this tool with a wind speed of 6 m/s is 7.46 volts.

A wind turbine generator output at a specific site depends on many factors, particularly cut- in, rated and cut-out wind speed parameters. Hence power output varies from turbine to turbine. The objective of this paper is to develop a mathematical relationship between reliability and wind power generation. The analytical computation of monthly wind power is obtained from weibull statistical model using cubic mean cube root of wind speed. Reliability calculation is based on failure probability analysis. There are many different types of wind turbinescommercially available in the market. From reliability point of view, to get optimum reliability in power generation, it is desirable to select a wind turbine generator which is best suited for a site. The mathematical relationship developed in this paper can be used for site-matching turbine selection in reliability point of view.

The rapid development in wind power comes with new technical challenges. Reliable and accurate wind power forecast is of considerable significance to the electricity system’s daily dispatching and production. Traditional forecast methods usually utilize wind speed and turbine parameters as the model inputs. However, they are not sufficient to account for complex weather variability and the various wind turbine features in the real world. Inspired by the excellent performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in computer vision, we propose a novel approach to predicting short-term wind power by converting time series into images and exploit a CNN to analyze them. In our approach, we first propose two transformation methods to map wind speed and precipitation data time series into image matrices. After integrating multi-dimensional information and extracting features, we design a novel CNN framework to forecast 24-h wind turbine power. Our method is implemented on the Keras deep learning platform and tested on 10 sets of 3-year wind turbine data from Hangzhou, China. The superior performance of the proposed method is demonstrated through comparisons using state-of-the-art techniques in wind turbine power forecasting.

According to the engineering phenomenon of the galloping of ice-coated transmission lines at certain wind speeds, this paper proposes a novel type of energy harvester based on the galloping of a flexible structure. It uses the tension generated by the galloping structure to cause periodic strain on the piezoelectric cantilever beam, which is highly efficient for converting wind energy into electricity. On this basis, a physical model of fluid–structure interaction is established, and the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation and SST K -ω turbulent model based on ANSYS Fluent are used to carry out a two-dimensional steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation. First, the CFD technology under different grid densities and time steps is verified. CFD numerical simulation technology is used to simulate the physical model of the energy harvester, and the effect of wind speed on the lateral displacement and aerodynamic force of the flexible structure is analyzed. In addition, this paper also carries out a parameterized study on the influence of the harvester’s behavior, through the wind tunnel test, focusing on the voltage and electric power output efficiency. The harvester has a maximum output power of 119.7 μW/mm3 at the optimal resistance value of 200 KΩ at a wind speed of 10 m/s. The research results provide certain guidance for the design of a high-efficiency harvester with a square aerodynamic shape and a flexible bluff body.

<p>A vertical axis wind turbine triple-stage savonius type has been created by using simple materials to generate electricity for the alternative wind power plant. The objective of this research is to design a simple wind turbine which can operate with low wind speed. The turbine was designed by making three savonius rotors and then varied the structure of angle on the three rotors, 0˚, 90˚ and 120˚. The dimension of the three rotors are created equal with each rotor diameter 35 cm and each rotor height 19 cm. The turbine was tested by using blower as the wind sources. Through the measurements obtained the comparisons of output power, rotation of turbine, and the level of efficiency generated by the three variations. The result showed that the turbine with angle of 120˚ operate most optimally because it is able to produce the highest output power and highest rotation of turbine which is 0.346 Watt and 222.7 RPM. </p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: Output power; savonius turbine; triple-stage; the structure of angle</p>

This paper addresses the optimal control of a long-haul passenger train to deliver minimum-fuel operations. Contrary to the common Pontryagin minimum principle approach in railroad-related literature, this work addresses this optimal control problem with a direct method of optimization, the use of which is still marginal in this field. The implementation of a particular direct method based on the Euler collocation scheme and its transcription into a nonlinear problem are described in detail. In this paper, this optimization technique is benchmarked with well-known optimization methods in the literature, namely dynamic programming and the Pontryagin minimum principle, by simulating a real route. The results showed that the direct methods are on the same level of optimality compared with other algorithms while requiring reduced computational time and memory and being able to handle very complex dynamic systems. The performance of the direct method is also compared to the real trajectory followed by the train operator and exhibits up to 20% of fuel saving in the example route.

Currently, wind power is the fastest-growing means of electricity generation in the world. To obtain the maximum efficiency from the wind energy conversion system, it is important that the control strategy design is carried out in the best possible way. In fact, besides regulating the frequency and output voltage of the electrical signal, these strategies should also extract energy from wind power at the maximum level of efficiency. With advances in micro-controllers and electronic components, the design and implementation of efficient controllers are steadily improving. This paper presents a maximum power point tracking controller scheme for a small wind energy conversion system with a variable speed permanent magnet synchronous generator. With the controller, the system extracts optimum possible power from the wind speed reaching the wind turbine and feeds it to the grid at constant voltage and frequency based on the AC–DC–AC conversion system. A MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment was used to carry out the simulations of the system. Simulation results were analyzed under variable wind speed and load conditions, exhibiting the performance of the proposed controller. It was observed that the controllers can extract maximum power and regulate the voltage and frequency under such variable conditions. Extensive results are included in the paper.
