The present study investigates static analyses of moderately thick FG plates. Using the First Order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT), functionally graded plates subjected to transversely distributed loading with various boundary conditions are studied. Effective mechanical properties which vary from one surface of the plate to the other assumed to be defined by a power law form of distribution. Different ceramic-metal sets of materials are studied. Solution of the governing equations, including five equilibrium and eight constitutive equations, is obtained by the Extended Kantorovich Method (EKM). The system of thirteen Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in terms of displacements, rotations, force and moment resultants are considered as multiplications of separable function of independent variables x and y. Then by successful utilization of the EKM these equations are converted to a double set of ODE systems in terms of x and y. The obtained ODE systems are then solved iteratively until final convergence is achieved. Closed form solution is presented for these ODE sets. It is shown that the method is very stable and provides fast convergence and highly accurate predictions for both thin and moderately thick plates. Comparison of the normal stresses at various points of rectangular plates and deflection of mid-point of the plate are presented and compared with available data in the literature. The effects of the volume fraction exponent n on the behavior of the normalized deflection, moment resultants and stresses of FG plates are also studied. To validate data for analysis fully clamped FG plates, another analysis was carried out using finite element code ANSYS. Close agreement is observed between predictions of the EKM and ANSYS.

In the present study, free vibration and buckling characteristics of a sandwich functionally graded material (FGM) plate resting on the Pasternak elastic foundation have been investigated. The formulation is based on non-polynomial higher-order shear deformation theory with inverse hyperbolic shape function. A new modified sigmoid law is presented to compute the effective material properties of sandwich FGM plate. The governing equilibrium equations have been derived using Hamilton’s principle. Non-dimensional frequencies and critical buckling loads are evaluated by considering different boundary conditions based on admissible functions satisfying the desired primary and secondary variables. Comprehensive parametric studies have been performed to analyze the influence of geometric configuration, volume fraction exponent, elastic medium parameter, and non-dimensional load parameter on the non-dimensional frequency and critical buckling load. These parametric studies have been done for various boundary conditions and different configurations of the sandwich plate. The computed results can be used as a benchmark for future comparison of sandwich S-FGM plates.

AbstractIn this paper, free vibration analysis of functionally graded rectangular plate is investigated based on the first order shear deformation theory and the effect of in-plane displacements on the natural frequencies of such plate is studied. The governing equations of motion are obtained, which are five coupled partial differential equations, without any simplification. Some mathematical manipulation leads us to decouple the equations. The decoupled equations are solved by the Levy's method for various boundary conditions. As the results show, in some boundary conditions the in-plane displacements cause a drastic change of frequencies. In other words, neglecting the in-plane displacement, which is assumed in some papers, is not proper for these boundary conditions. However, in the other boundary conditions, the natural frequencies are not significantly affected by the in-plane displacements. The results for various boundary conditions are discussed in detail and some interpretations for these differences are provided. Besides to the comparisons, the accurate natural frequencies of the plate for six different boundary conditions with several aspect ratios, thickness-length ratios and power law indices are presented. The natural frequencies of Mindlin functionally graded rectangular plates with considering the in-plane displacements are reported for the first time and can be used as benchmark.

Theoretical formulation, Navier’s solutions of rectangular plates based on a new higher order shear deformation model are presented for the static response of functionally graded plates. This theory enforces traction-free boundary conditions at plate surfaces. Shear correction factors are not required because a correct representation of transverse shearing strain is given. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness direction by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Numerical illustrations concern flexural behavior of FG plates with metal-ceramic composition. Parametric studies are performed for varying ceramic volume fraction, volume fractions profiles, aspect ratios, and length to thickness ratios. Results are verified with available results in the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static bending behavior of functionally graded plates.

Abstract This paper presents the vibroacoustic response of pure functionally graded plates under transient loading of mechanical nature. The functionally graded plate is modelled using the conventional first-order shear deformation theory to incorporate the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The mid-surface variables are determined using the finite element method. Transient structural response is determined using Newmark Beta time marching scheme and the acoustic pressure in the free field is obtained using the time-domain Rayleigh integral. The effective material properties of the FG plate and the transient response of both the structural and acoustic fields have been computed in MATLAB. The influence of the volume fraction index, thickness ratio and boundary conditions of pure FG plate on its transient vibroacoustic response is investigated by a detailed parametric study.

Based on the first-order non-linear von Karman theory, cylindrical bending of functionally graded (FG) plates subjected to mechanical, thermal, and combined thermo-mechanical loadings are investigated. Analytical solutions are obtained for an FG plate with various clamped and simply-supported boundary conditions. The closed form solutions obtained are very simple to be used in design purposes. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate according to a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The effects of non-linearity, material property, and boundary conditions on various response quantities are studied and discussed. It is found that linear analysis is inadequate for analysis of simply-supported FG plates even in the small deflection range especially when thermal load is present. Also it is shown that bending—extension coupling can not be seen in response quantities of clamped FG plates. Also an exact solution is developed for the one-dimensional heat conduction equation with variable heat conductivity coefficient.

Geometrically nonlinear parametric instability of functionally graded (FG) rectangular plates in thermal environments is investigated via multi-modal energy approach. Nonlinear higher-order shear deformation theory is used and the nonlinear response to in-plane static and harmonic excitation in the frequency neighbourhood of twice the fundamental frequency is investigated. The boundary conditions are assumed to be simply supported movable. The plate displacements and rotations are expanded in terms of double series trigonometric functions and Lagrange equations are used to reduce the energy functional to a system of infinite nonlinear ordinary differential equations with time varying coefficients, and quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. In order to obtain the complete dynamic scenario, numerical analyses are carried out by means of pseudo arc length continuation and collocation technique to obtain frequency-amplitude and force-amplitude relations in the presence of temperature variation in the thickness direction. The effect of volume fraction exponent as well as temperature variation on the on-set of instability for both static and periodic in-plane excitation are fully discussed and the post-critical nonlinear responses are obtained.

This research has been conducted to approach second-order shear deformation theory (SSDT) to analysis vibration characteristics of Functionally Graded Plates (FGP’s). Material properties in FGP's were assumed to be temperature dependent and graded along the thickness using a simple power law distribution in term of the volume fractions of the constituents. FGP was subjected to a linear and nonlinear temperature rise. The energy method was chosen to derive the equilibrium equations. The solution was based on the Fourier series that satisfy the simply supported boundary condition (Navier's method). Numerical results indicated the effect of material composition, plate geometry, and temperature fields on the vibration characteristics and mode shapes. The results revealed that, the temperature field and volume fraction distribution had significant effect on the vibration of FGPs. It was observed the second order theory was very close to the other shear deformation theorem as reported in the literature.

The present study deals with buckling, free vibration, and bending analysis of Functionally Graded (FG) and porous FG beams based on various beam theories. Equation of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton’s principle, and the finite element method is adopted to solve problems numerically. The FG beams are graded through the thickness direction, and the material distribution is controlled by power-law volume fraction. The effects of the different values of the power-law index, porosity exponent, and different boundary conditions on bending, natural frequencies and buckling characteristics are also studied. A new function is introduced to approximate the transverse shear strain in higher-order shear deformation theory. Furthermore, shifting the position of the neutral axis is taken into account. The results obtained numerically are validated with results obtained from ANSYS and those available in the previous work. The results of this study specify the crucial role of slenderness ratio, material distribution, and porosity condition on the characteristic of FG beams. The deflection results obtained by the proposed function have a maximum of six percent difference when the results are compared with ANSYS. It also has better results in comparison with the Reddy formulae, especially when the beam becomes slender. Doi: 10.28991/cej-2020-03091604 Full Text: PDF

In this paper, buckling behavior of a higher order functionally graded microbeam with porosities is investigated based on the modified couple stress theory and the exact position of the neutral axis. Porosities are evenly and unevenly distributed inside the functionally graded microbeam. Material properties of the functionally graded microbeam are assumed to vary in the thickness direction through a modified form of power-law distribution in which the volume fraction of porosities is considered. The governing equations are derived by using Hamilton's principle and an analytical method is employed to solve these equations for various boundary conditions. The present formulation and numerical results demonstrate a good agreement with some available cases in the literature. Influences of several important parameters such as power-law exponent, porosity distributions, porosity volume fraction, slenderness ratio, and various boundary conditions on buckling loads of porous functionally graded microbeams are investigated and discussed in detail.
