Identification and Analysis of Vortical Structures in a Ribbed Channel

Vortical motions, usually called sinews and muscles of fluid motions, constitute important features of turbulent flows and form the base for large-scale transport processes. In this study, we present a variety of flow decomposition techniques to identify and analyze the vortical structures in a ribbed channel. To this end, the instantaneous velocity fields are measured by means of a two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV). Firstly, the implementation of Galilean-, Reynolds- and large-eddy simulation (LES) decompositions on the instantaneous flow fields allows one to perceive the coherent vortices embedded in the separated shear layer. In addition, the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is employed to extract the underlying flow features out of the fluctuating velocity and vorticity fields, respectively. For velocity-based decomposition, the first two POD modes show that the shear layer is highly unstable and associated with the ‘flapping’ motion. For vorticity-based decomposition, the first two POD modes are characterized by the distinct horizontal bands which manifest the coherent structures in the shear layer. In order to interpret the flow structures in a convenient way, a linear combination of POD modes (reconstruction) is also carried out in the present study. The result shows that a large-scale, pronounced vortex is recognizable in the region downstream of rib.

Detailed measurements within the separated shear layer behind a flat plate normal to an airflow are reported. A long, central splitter plate in the wake prevented vortex shedding and led to an extensive region of separated flow with mean reattachment some ten plate heights downstream. The Reynolds number based on plate height was in excess of 2 × 1044.Extensive use of pulsed-wire anemometry allowed measurements of all the Reynolds stresses throughout the flow, along with some velocity autocorrelations and integral timescale data. The latter help to substantiate the results of other workers obtained in separated flows of related geometry, particularly in the identification of a very low-frequency motion with a timescale much longer than that associated with the large eddies in the shear layer. Wall-skin-friction measurements are consistent with the few similar data previously published and indicate that the thin boundary layer developing beneath the separated region has some ‘laminar-like’ features.The Reynolds-stress measurements demonstrate that the turbulence structure of the separated shear layer differs from that of a plane mixing layer between two streams in a number of ways. In particular, the normal stresses all rise monotonically as reattachment is approached, are always considerably higher than the plane layer values and develop in quite different ways. Flow similarity is not a useful concept. A major conclusion is that any effects of stabilizing streamline curvature are weak compared with the effects of the re-entrainment at the low-velocity edge of the shear layer of turbulent fluid returned around reattachment. It is argued that the general features of the flow are likely to be similar to those that occur in a wide range of complex turbulent flows dominated by a shear layer bounding a large-scale recirculating region.

The response of a stalled flow to a single impulse actuation is examined numerically to investigate the mechanism by which this actuation affects the flow. Delayed detached eddy simulation is used on a stalled NACA 4415 airfoil at an angle of attack of 20 degrees and Reynolds number Re = 570,000. A brief strong jet issues normal to the airfoil surface upstream of the nominal flow separation point of the airfoil, causing the boundary layer temporally reattached. This computation shows the detailed evolution of vortical structures generated by both the baseline flow and the impulse actuation. Initial vortices from the actuation convect downstream, interact with the separated shear layer, and dismantle the layer. After the collapse of the separated shear layer, the separation point moves aft and remains delayed for a much longer period than the actuation time, similar to experimental observation [1]. The jet is simply represented as a Dirichlet velocity boundary condition, which is found to be sufficient to represent the global effects of impulse actuation on the stalled flow.

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of isothermal flow in stationary and wall-normal rotating blade internal cooling system is evaluated against experimental data. The studied case is a 3D one wall ribbed straight channel for which time resolved two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements have been performed at the Von Karman Institute (VKI) in a near gas turbine operating condition. Thanks to these experimental mean and time-resolved quantities, advanced numerical computations can be adequately evaluated. In this work LES results show that this high fidelity CFD model is able to reproduce the turbulence increase (decrease) around the rib in destabilizing (stabilizing) rotation of the ribbed channel. Such effects are not only captured at the mean level but also at the unsteady level as confirmed by the comparison of the LES large-scale coherent motions with these obtained by PIV.

Abstract The switching mechanism and underlying flow physics of an actively controlled fluidic device are investigated using both large eddy simulation (LES) and particle imaging velocimetry (PIV). The fluidic device considered herein uses acoustic excitation of inherent flow instabilities to control the movement of the jet. Acoustic excitation at the preferred frequency is shown to yield high saturation amplitudes resulting in the formation of large vortical structures that do not undergo pairing. Basic flow features including the shear layer instabilities are further examined to explain why the excitation mode that triggers the switching process changes from a shear layer-based mode (Stθ=0.012) to a jet orifice mode (Sth=0.25) as the Reynolds number increases.

The current work is focused on investigating the potential of data-driven post-processing techniques, including proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) for flame dynamics. Large-eddy simulation (LES) of a V-gutter premixed flame was performed with two Reynolds numbers. The flame transfer function (FTF) was calculated. The POD and DMD were used for the analysis of the flame structures, wake shedding frequency, etc. The results acquired by different methods were also compared. The FTF results indicate that the flames have proportional, inertial, and delay components. The POD method could capture the shedding wake motion and shear layer motion. The excited DMD modes corresponded to the shear layer flames’ swing and convect motions in certain directions. Both POD and DMD could help to identify the wake shedding frequency. However, this large-scale flame oscillation is not presented in the FTF results. The negative growth rates of the decomposed mode confirm that the shear layer stabilized flame was more stable than the flame possessing a wake instability. The corresponding combustor design could be guided by the above results.

Emission and fuel consumption in swirl-supported diesel engines strongly depend on the in-cylinder turbulent flows. But the physical effects of squish flow on the tangential flow and turbulence production are still far from well understood. To identify the effects of squish flow, Particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments are performed in a motored optical diesel engine equipped with different bowls. By comparing and associating the large-scale flow and turbulent kinetic energy (k), the main effects of the squish flow are clarified. The effect of squish flow on the turbulence production in the r−θ plane lies in the axial-asymmetry of the annular distribution of radial flow and the deviation between the ensemble-averaged swirl field and rigid body swirl field. Larger squish flow could promote the swirl center to move to the cylinder axis and reduce the deformation of swirl center, which could decrease the axial-asymmetry of annular distribution of radial flow, further, that results in a lower turbulence production of the shear stress. Moreover, larger squish flow increases the radial fluctuation velocity which makes a similar contribution to k with the tangential component. The understanding of the squish flow and its correlations with tangential flow and turbulence obtained in this study is beneficial to design and optimize the in-cylinder turbulent flow.

We report an experimental investigation of the separating/reattaching flow over a descending ramp with a $25^{\circ }$ expansion angle. Emphasis is given to mass entrainment through the boundaries of the separated shear layer emanating from the upper edge of the ramp. For this purpose, the turbulent/non-turbulent interface and the separation line inferred from image-based analysis are used respectively to mark the upper and lower bounds of the separated shear layer. The main objective of this study is to identify the physical parameters that scale the development of the separated shear layer, by giving a specific emphasis to the investigation of mass entrainment. Our results emphasise the multiscale nature of mass entrainment through the separated shear layer. The recirculation length $L_{R}$, step height $h$ and free-stream velocity $U_{\infty }$ are the dominant scales that organise the separated flow (and related large-scale quantities as pressure distribution or shear layer growth rate) and set mean mass fluxes. However, local viscous mechanisms seem to be responsible for most of local mass entrainment. Furthermore, it is shown that large-scale mass entrainment is driven by incoming boundary layer properties, since $L_{R}$ scales with $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$, and in particular by its turbulent state. Surprisingly, the relationships evidenced in this study suggest that these dependencies are established over a large distance upstream of separation and that they might also extend to small scales, at which viscous entrainment is dominant. If confirmed by additional studies, our findings would open new perspectives for designing effective separation control systems.

Measurements of fluctuating pressure and velocity, together with instantaneous smoke-flow visualizations, are presented in order to reveal the unsteady structure of a separated and reattaching flow. It is shown that throughout the separation bubble a low-frequency motion can be detected which appears to be similar to that found in other studies of separation. This effect is most significant close to separation, where it leads to a weak flapping of the shear layer. Lateral correlation scales of this low-frequency motion are less than the reattachment length, however; it appears that its timescale is about equal to the characteristic timescale for the shear layer and bubble to change between various shedding phases. These phases were defined by the following observations: shedding of pseudoperiodic trains of vortical structures from the reattachment zone, with a characteristic spacing between structures of typically 60% to 80% of the bubble length; a large-scale but irregular shedding of vorticity; and a relatively quiescent phase with the absence of any large-scale shedding structures and a significant ‘necking’ of the shear layer downstream of reattachment.Spanwise correlations of velocity in the shear layer show on average an almost linear growth of spanwise scale up to reattachment. It appears that the shear layer reaches a fully three-dimensional state soon after separation. The reattachment process does not itself appear to impose an immediate extra three-dimensionalizing effect upon the large-scale structures.

An aneurysm is an abnormal growth in the wall of a weakened blood vessel, and can often be fatal upon rupture. Studies have shown that aneurysm shape and hemodynamics, in conjunction with other parameters, play an important role in growth and rupture. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of varying inflow conditions on flow structures in an aneurysm. An idealized rigid sidewall aneurysm model was prepared and the Womersley number (α) and Reynolds number (Re) values were varied from 2 to 5 and 50 to 250, respectively. A ViVitro Labs pump system was used for inflow control and Particle Image Velocimetry was used for conducting velocity measurements. The results showed that the primary vortex path varied with an increase in α, while an increase in Re was correlated to the vortex strength and formation of secondary vortical structures. The evolution and decay of vortical structures were also observed to be dependent on α and Re.

The primary objective is to perform a large eddy simulation (LES) using shear improved Smagorinsky model (SISM) to resolve the large-scale structures, which are primarily responsible for shear layer oscillations and acoustic loads in a cavity. The unsteady, three-dimensional (3D), compressible Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations have been solved following AUSM+-up algorithm in the finite-volume formulation for subsonic and supersonic flows, where the cavity length-to-depth ratio was 3.5 and the Reynolds number based on cavity depth was 42,000. The present LES resolves the formation of shear layer, its rollup resulting in large-scale structures apart from shock–shear layer interactions, and evolution of acoustic waves. It further indicates that hydrodynamic instability, rather than the acoustic waves, is the cause of self-sustained oscillation for subsonic flow, whereas the compressive and acoustic waves dictate the cavity oscillation, and thus the sound pressure level for supersonic flow. The present LES agrees well with the experimental data and is found to be accurate enough in resolving the shear layer growth, compressive wave structures, and radiated acoustic field.
