Determination of Cooling Parameters for a High Speed, True Scale, Metallic Turbine Vane Ring

Film cooling technology has been around for many decades and many significant advances in cooling effectiveness have been made at many different facilities using several different methods. A large proportion of film cooling research is successfully carried out using simplified scaled-up models in wind tunnels coupled with novel measurement techniques. These tests have been very effective in assessing basic film cooling parameters for many cooling hole geometries, patterns, and blowing ratios. In real engines, however, film cooling designs are ultimately subjected to highly unsteady 3-D secondary flows and rotational effects. Few film cooling experiments have quantified these effects on real, true scale turbine hardware in a rotating test environment. The Turbine Research Facility (TRF) at the Air Force Research Laboratory has been acquiring uncooled heat transfer measurements on full scale metallic airfoils both with and without rotation for several years. The addition of cooling flow to this type of facility has provided new capability, and new challenges. The primary two issues being that the film temperature is unknown and that the airfoil is no longer semi-infinite. This makes it more difficult to extract the adiabatic effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient from the measurements of surface temperature and surface heat transfer since conventional methods used in most other experiments are not valid in this case. In contrast another cooling parameter, the overall effectiveness, is readily obtained from measurements of surface temperature, internal coolant temperature, and mainstream temperature. The overall effectiveness is a normalized measure of metal surface temperatures expected for actual operating conditions. It is the goal of this paper to evaluate how measurements, obtained from a transient blowdown facility like the TRF, can be used to quantify the expected performance of a film cooled turbine airfoil. Additionally, it is imperative to properly correlate these experimental results to the true engine conditions. The data required for this analysis has been collected using an array of surface mounted thermocouples and thin film gauges in a series of experiments where freestream temperatures and coolant temperatures and mass flow rates were varied. The airfoil used in this investigation was a thin walled metallic airfoil with a showerhead cooling scheme and several rows of normal holes on both the pressure and suction sides of the airfoil. The flow is typical of that seen in a modern high pressure turbine — that is an inlet Mach number of about 0.1 accelerating toward sonic at the throat with a high inlet freestream turbulence level of about 20%.

Endwall contouring is a technique used to reduce the strength and development of three-dimensional secondary flows in a turbine vane or blade passage in a gas turbine. The secondary flows locally affect the external heat transfer, particularly on the endwall surface. The combination of external and internal convective heat transfer, along with solid conduction, determines component temperatures, which affect the service life of turbine components. A conjugate heat transfer model is used to measure the nondimensional external surface temperature, known as overall effectiveness, of an endwall with nonaxisymmetric contouring. The endwall cooling methods include internal impingement cooling and external film cooling. Measured values of overall effectiveness show that endwall contouring reduces the effectiveness of impingement alone, but increases the effectiveness of film cooling alone. Given the combined case of both impingement and film cooling, the laterally averaged overall effectiveness is not significantly changed between the flat and the contoured endwalls. Flowfield measurements indicate that the size and location of the passage vortex changes as film cooling is added and as the blowing ratio increases. Because endwall contouring can produce local effects on internal cooling and film cooling performance, the implications for heat transfer should be considered in endwall contour designs.

Abstract The development and verification of new turbulence models for RANS equations based numerical methods require reliable experimental data with a deep understanding of the underlying turbulence mechanisms. High accurate turbulence measurements are normally limited to simplified test cases under optimal experimental conditions. This work presents comprehensive three-dimensional data of turbulent flow quantities, comparing advanced constant temperature anemometry (CTA) and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) methods under realistic test conditions. The experiments are conducted downstream of a linear, low-pressure turbine cascade at engine relevant high speed operating conditions. The special combination of high subsonic Mach and low Reynolds number results in a low density test environment, challenging for all applied measurement techniques. Detailed discussions about influences affecting the measured result for each specific measuring technique is given. The presented time mean fields, as well as total turbulence data demonstrate with an average deviation of ΔTu < 0.4% and ΔC/Cref < 0.9% an extraordinary good agreement between the results from the triple sensor hot-wire probe and the 2D3C-PIV setup. Most differences between PIV and CTA can be explained by the finite probe size and individual geometry.

There have been a number of previous studies of the adiabatic film effectiveness for the showerhead region of a turbine vane, but no previous studies of the overall cooling effectiveness. The overall cooling effectiveness is a measure of the external surface temperature relative to the mainstream temperature and the inlet coolant temperature, and consequently is a direct measure of how effectively the surface is cooled. This can be determined experimentally when the model is constructed so that the Biot number is similar to that of engine components, and the internal cooling is designed so that the ratio of the external to internal heat transfer coefficient is matched to that of the engine. In this study, the overall effectiveness was experimentally measured on a model turbine vane constructed of a material to match Bi for engine conditions. The model incorporated an internal impingement cooling configuration. The cooling design consisted of a showerhead composed of five rows of holes with one additional row on both pressure and suction sides of the vane. An identical model was also constructed out of low conductivity foam to measure adiabatic film effectiveness. Of particular interest in this study was to use the overall cooling effectiveness measurements to identify local hot spots which might lead to failure of the vane. Furthermore, the experimental measurements provided an important database for evaluation of computational fluid dynamics simulations of the conjugate heat transfer effects that occur in the showerhead region. Continuous improvement in both measures of performance was demonstrated with increasing momentum flux ratio.

Facilities such as the Turbine Research Facility (TRF) at the Air Force Research Laboratory have been acquiring uncooled heat transfer measurements on full-scale metallic airfoils for several years. The addition of cooling flow to this type of facility has provided new capabilities and new challenges. Two primary challenges for cooled rotating hardware are that the true local film temperature is unknown, and cooled thin-walled metallic airfoils prohibit semi-infinite heat conduction calculation. Extracting true local adiabatic effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient from measurements of surface temperature and surface heat transfer is therefore difficult. In contrast, another cooling parameter, the overall effectiveness (ϕ), is readily obtained from the measurements of surface temperature, internal coolant temperature, and mainstream temperature. The overall effectiveness is a normalized measure of surface temperatures expected for actual operating conditions and is thus an important parameter that drives the life expectancy of a turbine component. Another issue is that scaling ϕ from experimental conditions to engine conditions is dependent on the heat transfer through the part. It has been well-established that the Biot number must be matched for the experimentally measured ϕ to match ϕ at engine conditions. However, the thermal conductivity of both the metal blade and the thermal barrier coating changes substantially from low-temperature to high-temperature engine conditions and usually not in the same proportion. This paper describes a novel method of replicating the correct thermal behavior of the thermal barrier coating (TBC) relative to the metal turbine while obtaining surface temperature measurements and heat fluxes. Furthermore, this paper describes how the ϕ value obtained at the low-temperature conditions can be adjusted to predict ϕ at high-temperature engine conditions when it is impossible to match the Biot number perfectly.

Low emission requirements for large industrial gas turbines can be achieved with flat combustor temperature profiles reducing the combustor peak temperature. As a result the heat load on the first stage vane platforms increases and platform film cooling is an important requirement. Furthermore, high lift airfoils generate stronger secondary flows including complex vortex flows over the platforms, which impacts heat transfer coefficients and film cooling. Cascade tests have been performed on a high lift profile with a platform film configuration and will be presented. The linear cascade was operated at engine representative Mach numbers. Pressure measurements are compared to design data to ensure correct operating conditions and periodicity of the cascade. The thermochromic liquid crystal measurement technique is used to obtain adiabatic film cooling effectiveness. The upstream gap (corresponding to the gap between the combustor and turbine) and the purge air exiting this gap are included in the investigations. The effect of the purge air on the recovery temperature is very strong and needs to be taken into account for the layout of the cooling scheme. The heat transfer coefficient distribution on the platform is obtained for an uncooled configuration using a transient infrared imaging technique with heat flux reconstruction. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) assessments are used to support the validation results. Heat transfer coefficients and the effect of the purge air on adiabatic wall temperatures are compared with experimental results.

The purpose of this paper is to present the new transonic, annular facility developed at the von Karman Institute to investigate the aerodynamic heat transfer performances of real size advanced aero-engine and gas turbine components at correctly simulated operating conditions. The facility operates under the principle of an Isentropic Light Piston Compression Tube. Its definite advantage over classical blowdown wind tunnels is to independently model the freestream Mach and Reynolds numbers as well as the gas/wall/coolant temperature ratios. Its running time ranges between 0.1 and 1 s. The first part of the paper describes the design, the manufacturing and the installation of the different components of the wind tunnel and the test section. The second part deals with the different measurement techniques applied for aerodynamic and heat transfer measurements; it also describes some examples of the flow quality obtained in this new facility.

This paper investigates the effects of gear geometry, rotational speed and applied load, as well as lubrication conditions on surface temperature of high-speed gear teeth. The analytical approach and procedure for estimating frictional heat flux and heat transfer coefficients of gear teeth in high-speed operational conditions was developed and accounts for the effect of oil mist as a cooling medium. Numerical simulations of tooth temperature based on finite element analysis were established to investigate temperature distributions and variations over a range of applied load and rotational speed, which compared well with experimental measurements. A sensitivity analysis of surface temperature to gear configuration, frictional heat flux, heat transfer coefficients, and oil and ambient temperatures was conducted and the major parameters influencing surface temperature were evaluated.

The clearance gap between the stationary outer air seal and blade tips of an axial turbine allows a clearance gap leakage flow to be driven through the gap by the pressure-to-suction side pressure difference. The presence of strong secondary flows on the pressure side of the airfoil tends to deliver air from the hottest regions of the mainstream to the clearance gap. The blade tip region, particularly near the trailing edge, is very difficult to cool adequately with blade internal coolant flow. In this case, film cooling injection directly onto the blade tip region can be used in an attempt to directly reduce the heat transfer rates from the hot gases in the clearance gap to the blade tip. The present paper is intended as a memorial tribute to the late Professor Darryl E. Metzger who has made significant contributions in this particular area over the past decade. A summary of this work is made to present the results of his more recent experimental work that has been performed to investigate the effects of film coolant injection on convection heat transfer to the turbine blade tip for a variety of tip shapes and coolant injection configurations. Experiments are conducted with blade tip models that are stationary relative to the simulated outer air seal based on the result of earlier works that found the leakage flow to be mainly a pressure-driven flow which is related strongly to the airfoil pressure loading distribution and only weakly, if at all, to the relative motion between blade tip and shroud. Both heat transfer and film effectiveness are measured locally over the test surface using a transient thermal liquid crystal test technique with a computer vision data acquisition and reduction system for various combinations of clearance heights, clearance flow Reynolds numbers, and film flow rates with different coolant injection configurations. The present results reveal a strong dependency of film cooling performance on the choice of the coolant supply hole shapes and injection locations for a given tip geometry.
