Heat Transfer and Pressure Loss in a Two-Pass, Rectangular Channel Featuring a Reduced Cross-Sectional Area After the 180-Degree Tip Turn With Different Turning Vane Configurations

Abstract Serpentine, varying aspect ratio cooling passages, are typically used in cooling advanced gas turbine blades. These passages are usually connected by sharp, 180-deg bends. In the open literature, most of the internal cooling studies use a fixed cross-sectional area for multi-pass channels. Studies that use varying aspect ratio channels, along with a guide (turn) vane to direct the flow with turning, are scarce. In general, studies show that the incorporation of turning vanes in the bend region of a multi-pass channel keeps the heat transfer rate high while reducing pressure loss. Therefore, the current study investigates the effect of using different guide (turn) vane designs on both the detailed heat transfer distribution and pressure loss in a multi-pass channel with an aspect ratio of (4:1) in the entry passage and (2:1) in the second passage downstream of the vane (s). The first vane configuration is one solid-vane with a semi-circular cross-section connecting the two flow passages. The second configuration has three broken-vanes with a quarter-circular cross-section; two broken vanes are located downstream in the first passage (entering the turn), and one broken vane is upstream in the second passage (exiting the turn). For a Reynolds number range 15,000 to 45,000, detailed heat transfer distributions were obtained on all surfaces within the flow passages by using a transient liquid crystal method. The results show that the turning vane configurations have large effects on the heat transfer, in the turning bend and second passage, and the overall pressure drop. Results show that including the semi-circular vane in the turning region of a multi-pass channel enhanced the overall heat transfer by around 29% with a reduction in pressure loss by around 20%. Moreover, results show that the quarter-circular vane design provides higher overall averaged heat transfer enhancement than the semi-circular vane design by around 9% with penalty of higher pressure drop by 6%, which yields higher thermal performance by 7%, over the Reynolds number range.

An experimental and numerical investigation of the pressure loss and the heat transfer in the bend region of a smooth two-pass cooling channel with a 180°-turn has been performed. The channels have a rectangular cross-section with a high aspect ratio of H/W = 4. The heat transfer has been measured using the transient liquid crystal method. For the investigations the Reynolds-number as well as the distance between the tip and the divider wall (tip distance) are varied. While the Reynolds number varies from 50’000 to 200’000 and its influence on the normalized pressure loss and heat transfer is found to be small, the variations of the tip distance from 0.5 up to 3.65 W produce quite different flow structures in the bend. The pressure loss over the bend thus shows a strong dependency on these variations.

Heat transfer distributions are presented for a stationary three passage serpentine internal cooling channel for a range of engine representative Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the sidewalls of the serpentine passage is fixed and the aspect ratio (AR) is adjusted to 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 by changing the distance between the top and bottom walls. Data are presented for aspect ratios of 1:1 and 1:6 for smooth passage walls and for aspect ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:6 for passages with two surfaces turbulated. For the turbulated cases, turbulators skewed 45° to the flow are installed on the top and bottom walls. The square turbulators are arranged in an offset parallel configuration with a fixed rib pitch-to-height ratio (P/e) of 10 and a rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/Dh) range of 0.100 to 0.058 for AR 1:1 to 1:6, respectively. The experiments span a Reynolds number range of 4,000 to 130,000 based on the passage hydraulic diameter. While this experiment utilizes a basic layout similar to previous research, it is the first to run an aspect ratio as large as 1:6, and it also pushes the Reynolds number to higher values than were previously available for the 1:2 aspect ratio. The results demonstrate that while the normalized Nusselt number for the AR 1:2 configuration changes linearly with Reynolds number up to 130,000, there is a significant change in flow behavior between Re = 25,000 and Re = 50,000 for the aspect ratio 1:6 case. This suggests that while it may be possible to interpolate between points for different flow conditions, each geometric configuration must be investigated independently. The results show the highest heat transfer and the greatest heat transfer enhancement are obtained with the AR 1:6 configuration due to greater secondary flow development for both the smooth and turbulated cases. This enhancement was particularly notable for the AR 1:6 case for Reynolds numbers at or above 50,000.

Modern high-performance gas turbine engines operate at high turbine inlet temperatures and require internal convection cooling of many of the components exposed to the hot gas flow. Cooling air is supplied from the engine compressor at a cost to cycle performance and a design goal is to provide necessary cooling with the minimum required cooling air flow. In conjunction with this objective, two families of pin fin array geometries which have potential for improving airfoil internal cooling performance were studied experimentally. One family utilizes pins of a circular cross section with various orientations of the array with respect to the mean flow direction. The second family utilizes pins with an oblong cross section with various pin orientations with respect to the mean flow direction. Both heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics are presented. The results indicate that the use of circular pins with array orientation between staggered and inline can in some cases increase heat transfer while decreasing pressure loss. The use of elongated pins increases heat transfer, but at a high cost of increased pressure loss. In conjunction with the present measurements, previously published results were reexamined in order to estimate the magnitude of heat transfer coefficients on the pin surfaces relative to those of the endwall surfaces. The estimate indicates that the pin surface coefficients are approximately double the endwall values.

Abstract Turbulators are a promising avenue to enhance heat transfer in a wide variety of applications. An experimental and numerical investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop of a broken V (chevron) turbulator is presented at Reynolds numbers ranging from approximately 300,000 to 900,000 in a rectangular channel with an aspect ratio (width/height) of 1.29. The rib height is 3% of the channel hydraulic diameter while the rib spacing to rib height ratio is fixed at 10. Heat transfer measurements are performed on the flat surface between ribs using transient liquid crystal thermography. The experimental results reveal a significant increase of the heat transfer and friction factor of the ribbed surface compared to a smooth channel. Both parameters increase with Reynolds number, with a heat transfer enhancement ratio of up to 2.15 (relative to a smooth channel) and a friction factor ratio of up to 6.32 over the investigated Reynolds number range. Complementary CFD RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations are performed with the κ-ω SST turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent® 17.1, and the numerical estimates are compared against the experimental data. The results reveal that the discrepancy between the experimentally measured area averaged Nusselt number and the numerical estimates increases from approximately 3% to 13% with increasing Reynolds number from 339,000 to 917,000. The numerical estimates indicate turbulators enhance heat transfer by interrupting the boundary layer as well as increasing near surface turbulent kinetic energy and mixing.

Convective heat transfer enhancement and pressure loss characteristics in a wide rectangular channel (AR = 4) with staggered pin fin arrays are investigated experimentally. Six sets of pin fins with the same nominal diameter (Dn = 8mm) are tested, including: Circular, Elliptic, Oblong, Dropform, NACA and Lancet. The relative spanwise pitch (S/Dn = 2) and streamwise pitch (X/Dn = 4.5) are kept the same for all six sets. Same nominal diameter and arrangement guarantee the same blockage area in the channel for each set. Reynolds number based on channel hydraulic diameter is from 10000 to 70000 with an increment of 10000. Using thermochromic liquid crystal (R40C20W), heat transfer coefficients on bottom surface of the channel are achieved. The obtained friction factor, Nusselt number and overall thermal performance are compared with the previously published data from other groups. The averaged Nusselt number of Circular pin fins is the largest in these six pin fins under different Re. Though Elliptic has a moderate level of Nusselt number, its pressure loss is next to the lowest. Elliptic pin fins have pretty good overall thermal performance in the tested Reynolds number range. When Re>40000, Lancet has a same level of performance as Circular, but its pressure loss is much lower than Circular. These two types are both promising alternative configuration to Circular pin fin used in gas turbine blade.

In a system of rigid tubes under steady flow conditions, the coefficient of friction [CF = 2 delta P/(rho V2/A2)] (where delta P is pressure drop, rho is density, V is flow, and A is cross-sectional area) should be a unique function of Reynolds' number (Re). Recently it has been shown that at any given Re, the value of CF using transpulmonary pressure (PL) was lower when breathing He-O2 compared with air (Lisboa et al., J. Appl. Physiol.: Respirat. Environ. Exercise Physiol. 48: 878–885, 1980). One explanation for this discontinuity is that PL includes the pressure drop due to tissue viscance, which is independent of V, and thus would lead to an overestimate of CF on air compared with He-O2 at any Re. We tested this hypothesis by measuring V related to alveolar pressure, rather than PL, in normal subjects breathing air, He-O2, and SF6-O2. In each subject, for a given Re, CF was greatest breathing SF6-O2 and lowest breathing He-O2, similar to results using PL. Thus tissue viscance is not the sole cause of the discontinuous plot of CF vs. Re, and this phenomenon must be due to other factors, such as changing geometry or nonsteady behavior.

Abstract The internal cooling passages of gas turbine blades mostly have varying aspect ratios from one passage to another. However, there are limited data available in the open literature that used a reduced cross-section and aspect ratio, AR, after the tip turn. Therefore, the current study presents heat transfer and pressure drop of three different α = 45° profiled rib orientations, typical parallel (usual), reversed parallel (unusual), and criss-cross patterns in a rotating two-pass rectangular channel with AR = 4:1 and 2:1 in the first radially outward flow and second radially inward flow passages respectively. For each rib orientation, regional averaged heat transfer results are obtained for both the flow passages with the Reynolds number ranging from 10,000 to 70,000 for the first passage and 16000 to 114000 for the second passage with a rotational speed range of 0 rpm to 400 rpm. This results in the highest rotation number of 0.39 and 0.16 for the first and second passage respectively. The effects of rib orientation, aspect ratio variation, 180° tip turn, and rotation number on the heat transfer and pressure drop will be addressed. According to the results, for usual, unusual and criss-cross rib patterns, increasing rotation number causes the heat transfer to decrease on the leading surface and increase on the trailing surface for the first passage and vice versa for the second passage. Overall heat transfer enhancement of the usual and unusual rib patterns is higher than criss-cross one. In terms of the pressure losses, the criss-cross rib pattern has the lowest and the usual rib pattern has the highest-pressure loss coefficients. When pressure loss and heat transfer enhancement are both taken into account together, the criss-cross or unusual rib pattern might be an option to use in the internal cooling method. Therefore, the results can be useful for turbine blade internal cooling design and heat transfer analysis.

The present study features a two-pass rectangular channel with an aspect ratio (AR) = 4:1 in the first pass and an AR = 2:1 in the second pass after a 180-deg tip turn. In addition to the smooth-wall case, ribs with a profiled cross section are placed at 60 deg to the flow direction on both the leading and trailing surfaces in both passages (P/e = 10, e/Dh ∼ 0.11, parallel and in-line). Regionally averaged heat transfer measurement method was used to obtain the heat transfer coefficients on all internal surfaces. The Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 10,000 to 70,000 in the first passage, and the rotational speed ranges from 0 to 400 rpm. Under pressurized condition (570 kPa), the highest rotation number achieved was Ro = 0.39 in the first passage and 0.16 in the second passage. The results showed that the turn-induced secondary flows are reduced in an accelerating flow. The effects of rotation on heat transfer are generally weakened in the ribbed case than the smooth case. Significant heat transfer reduction (∼30%) on the tip wall was seen in both the smooth and ribbed cases under rotating condition. Overall pressure penalty was reduced for the ribbed case under rotation. Reynolds number effect was found noticeable in the current study. The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics are sensitive to the geometrical design of the channel and should be taken into account in the design process.

A numerical investigation of the heat transfer characteristics within an array of impingement jets on a flat and square pin-fin roughened plate with spent air in one direction has been conducted. Four types of optimized pin-fin configurations and the flat plate have been investigated in the Reynolds number range of 15000–35000. All the computation results have been validated well with the data of published literature. The effects of variation of jet Reynolds number and different configurations on the distribution of the average and local Nusselt number and the related pressure loss have been obtained. The highest total heat transfer rate increased up to 162% with barely any extra pressure loss compared with that of the flat plate. Pressure distributions and streamlines have also been captured to explain the heat transfer characteristic.
