Introduction to Multi-Point Design Strategies for Aero Engines

Abstract Classic gas turbine design relies on the definition of a design point, and the subsequent assessment of the design on a range of off-design conditions. On the design point, both component sizing (e.g., in terms of physical dimensions or in terms of map scaling parameters) and a solution to the off-design governing equations are established. With this approach, it is however difficult to capture the contradicting requirements on the full operating envelope. Thus, practical design efforts rely on various multi-point design approaches. This paper introduces a simplified notation of such multi-point approaches via synthesis matching tables. It then summarizes two academic state-of-the-art multi-point design schemes using such tables in a comprehensible fashion. The target audience are students and engineers familiar with the basics of classic cycle design and analysis looking for a practical introduction to such multi-point design approaches. Application examples are given in terms of a simple turbojet and a typical geared turbofan as modeled in state-of-the-art academic cycle design and analysis efforts. The results of the classic design point approach are compared to those of multi-point approaches.

Transonic compressors with high leading edge Mach numbers are today state of the art in gas turbine design. This holds true for both aero engines and stationary gas turbines. In the early days of highly loaded compressors, the development started from the ideas about supersonic compressors with very high stage pressure ratios. This historical development and the basic ideas are described. The contributions of H. E. Gallus to this development are specially referred to. On that basis, today’s transonic compressors with reduced loading have been developed. The characteristic physics and design features of recent compressors are discussed with respect to aerodynamics, performance, structure mechanics and production technology. This is also done in view of the ideas of the pioneers in this field. Future technology trends of these compressor types as well as new compressor types are presented in the last part of the paper.

Background:Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) which play an important role in various cellular processes are important in medicine as well as in drug design strategies. Different studies have shown that ncRNAs are dis-regulated in cancer cells and play an important role in human tumorigenesis. Therefore, it is important to identify and predict such molecules by experimental and computational methods, respectively. However, to avoid expensive experimental methods, computational algorithms have been developed for accurately and fast prediction of ncRNAs.Objective:The aim of this review was to introduce the experimental and computational methods to identify and predict ncRNAs structure. Also, we explained the ncRNA’s roles in cellular processes and drugs design, briefly.Method:In this survey, we will introduce ncRNAs and their roles in biological and medicinal processes. Then, some important laboratory techniques will be studied to identify ncRNAs. Finally, the state-of-the-art models and algorithms will be introduced along with important tools and databases.Results:The results showed that the integration of experimental and computational approaches improves to identify ncRNAs. Moreover, the high accurate databases, algorithms and tools were compared to predict the ncRNAs.Conclusion:ncRNAs prediction is an exciting research field, but there are different difficulties. It requires accurate and reliable algorithms and tools. Also, it should be mentioned that computational costs of such algorithm including running time and usage memory are very important. Finally, some suggestions were presented to improve computational methods of ncRNAs gene and structural prediction.

This work aims to reorganize theoretical and empirical research on smart mobility through the systematic literature review approach. The research goal is to reach an extended and shared definition of smart mobility using the cluster analysis. The article provides a summary of the state of the art that can have broader impacts in determining new angles for approaching research. In particular, the results will be a reference for future quantitative developments for the authors who are working on the construction of a territorial measurement model of the smartness degree, helping them in identifying performance indicators consistent with the definition proposed.

The Smart Skin Envelope research analyses the recent revolution that has taken place in the sector of planning and production of smart skin components, made up of dynamic layers. The aim is to identify the technological, functional, qualitative and performance parameters that guide the decisions of the actors in the innovation process. It explores the factors that drive them to develop solutions and proposals designed to transform the envelope of the building from a static to a dynamic element, featuring interoperable components that can interact with the input from the outdoor and indoor environments, in relation to which the smart skin acts as a system of boundary and delimitation. The proposed research programme explores in particular the sector of Smart Envelopes, setting as its priority objective the identification and definition of the energy performance, both through analysis of the state of the art and through the development of a facade component that is dynamic in terms of the adaptive variability of its performance.

Electro-hydraulic servo-actuators (EHSAs) are currently considered the state-of-the art solution for the control of the primary flight control systems of civil and military aircraft. Combining the expected service life of a commercial aircraft with the fact that electro-hydraulic technology is employed in the vast majority of currently in-service aircraft and is planned to be used on future platforms as well, the development of an effective Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) system could provide significant advantages to fleet operators and aircraft maintenance, such as the reduction of unplanned flight disruptions and increased availability of the aircraft. The occurrence of excessive internal leakage within the EHSAs is one of the most common causes of return from the field of flight control actuators, making this failure mode a priority in the definition of any dedicated PHM routine. This paper presents a case study on the design of a prognostic system for this degradation mode, in the context of a wider effort toward the definition of a prognostic framework suitable to work on in-flight data. The study is performed by means of a high-fidelity simulation model supported by experimental activities. Results of both the simulation and the experimental work are used to select a suitable feature, then implemented within the prognostic framework based on particle filtering. The algorithm is at first theoretically discussed, and then tested against several degradation patterns. Performances are evaluated through state-of-the-art metrics, showing promising results and providing the basis towards future applications on real in-flight data.

This chapter concerns the visual saliency and the perceptual quality assessment of 3D meshes. Firstly, the chapter proposes a definition of visual saliency and describes the state-of-the-art methods for its detection on 3D mesh surfaces. A focus is made on a recent model of visual saliency detection for 3D colored and non-colored meshes whose results are compared with a ground-truth saliency as well as with the literature's methods. Since this model is able to estimate the visual saliency on 3D colored meshes, named colorimetric saliency, a description of the construction of a 3D colored mesh database that was used to assess its relevance is presented. The authors also describe three applications of the detailed model that respond to the problems of viewpoint selection, adaptive simplification and adaptive smoothing. Secondly, two perceptual quality assessment metrics for 3D non-colored meshes are described, analyzed, and compared with the state-of-the-art approaches.

Over the last few decades, data has assumed a central role, becoming one of the most valuable items in society. The exponential increase of several dimensions of data, e.g. volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and value, has led the definition of novel methodologies and techniques to represent, manage, and analyse data. In this context, many efforts have been devoted in data reuse and integration processes based on the semantic web approach. According to this vision, people are encouraged to share their data using standard common formats to allow more accurate interconnection and integration processes. In this article, the authors propose an ontology matching framework using novel combinations of semantic matching techniques to find accurate mappings between formal ontologies schemas. Moreover, an upper-level ontology is used as a semantic bridge. An implementation of the proposed framework is able to retrieve, match, and align ontologies. The framework has been evaluated with the state-of-the-art ontologies in the domain of cultural heritage and its performances have been measured by means of standard measures.
