Steam Condensation Experiments by the MISTRA Facility for Field Containment Code Validation

The MISTRA facility is a large scale experiment, designed for the validation of thermal-hydraulics multi-D codes. A short description of the facility, the set up of the instrumentation and the test program are presented. Then, experimental results, studying axisymmetric flows of steam injected in the containment and condensed on temperature regulated walls are detailed. Experimental evaluation of the mass and heat transfer coefficients is proposed, then they are compared with the prediction of usual models for condensation, such as Tagami Uchida (0D codes) and the dimensionless correlations (multi-D codes).

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of buoyancy and Coriolis forces on heat transfer in turbine blade internal coolant passages. The experiments were conducted with a large-scale, multipass, heat transfer model with both radially inward and outward flow. Trip strips on the leading and trailing surfaces of the radial coolant passages were used to produce the rough walls. An analysis of the governing flow equations showed that four parameters influence the heat transfer in rotating passages: coolant-to-wall temperature ratio, Rossby number, Reynolds number, and radius-to-passage hydraulic diameter ratio. The first three of these four parameters were varied over ranges that are typical of advanced gas turbine engine operating conditions. Results were correlated and compared to previous results from stationary and rotating similar models with trip strips. The heat transfer coefficients on surfaces, where the heat transfer increased with rotation and buoyancy, varied by as much as a factor of four. Maximum values of the heat transfer coefficients with high rotation were only slightly above the highest levels obtained with the smooth wall model. The heat transfer coefficients on surfaces where the heat transfer decreased with rotation, varied by as much as a factor of three due to rotation and buoyancy. It was concluded that both Coriolis and buoyancy effects must be considered in turbine blade cooling designs with trip strips and that the effects of rotation were markedly different depending upon the flow direction.

Mass and heat transfer coefficients (MTC and HTC) in automotive exhaust catalytic monolith channels are estimated and correlated for a wide range of gas velocities and prevailing conditions of small up to real size converters. The coefficient estimation is based on a two dimensional computational fluid dynamic (2-D CFD) model developed in Comsol Multiphysics, taking into account catalytic rates of a real catalytic converter. The effect of channel size and reaction rates on mass and heat transfer coefficients and the applicability of the proposed correlations at different conditions are discussed. The correlations proposed predict very satisfactorily the mass and heat transfer coefficients calculated from the 2-D CFD model along the channel length. The use of a one dimensional (1-D) simplified model that couples a plug flow reactor (PFR) with mass transport and heat transport effects using the mass and heat transfer correlations of this study is proved to be appropriate for the simulation of the monolith channel operation.

A comprehensive set of generic experiments is conducted to investigate the interaction of film cooling rows. Five different film cooling configurations are considered on a large scale basis each consisting of two rows of film cooling holes in staggered arrangement. The hole pitch to diameter ratio within each row is kept constant at P/D = 4. The spacing between the rows is either x/D = 10, 20, or 30. Fanshaped holes or simple cylindrical holes with an inclination angle of 30 deg. and a hole length of 6 hole diameters are used. With a hot gas Mach number of Mam = 0.3, an engine like density ratio of ρc/ρm = 1.75, and a freestream turbulence intensity of Tu = 5.1% are established. Operating conditions are varied in terms of blowing ratio for the upstream and, independently, the downstream row in the range 0.5<M<2.0. The results illustrate the importance of considering ejection into an already film cooled boundary layer. Adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients are significantly increased. The decay of effectiveness with streamwise distance is much less pronounced downstream of the second row primarily due to pre-cooling of the boundary layer by the first row of holes. Additionally, a comparison of measured effectiveness data with predictions according to the widely used superposition model of Sellers [11] is given for two rows of fanshaped holes.

Trip strips, skewed at 45 deg to the flow direction, were machined on the leading and trailing surfaces of the radial coolant passages. An analysis of the governing flow equations showed that four parameters influence the heat transfer in rotating passages: coolant-to-wall temperature ratio, rotation number, Reynolds number, and radius-to-passage hydraulic diameter ratio. The first three of these four parameters were varied over ranges that are typical of advanced gas turbine engine operating conditions. Results were correlated and compared to previous results from similar stationary and rotating models with smooth walls and with trip strips normal to the flow direction. The heat transfer coefficients on surfaces, where the heat transfer decreased with rotation and buoyancy, decreased to as low as 40 percent of the value without rotation. However, the maximum values of the heat transfer coefficients with high rotation were only slightly above the highest levels previously obtained with the smooth wall model. It was concluded that (1) both Coriolis and buoyancy effects must be considered in turbine blade cooling designs with trip strips, (2) the effects of rotation are markedly different depending upon the flow direction, and (3) the heat transfer with skewed trip strips is less sensitive to buoyancy than the heat transfer in models with either smooth walls or normal trips. Therefore, skewed trip strips rather than normal trip strips are recommended and geometry-specific tests will be required for accurate design information.

The concept of Adiabatic Surface Temperature (AST) opens possibilities to calculate heat transfer to a solid surface based on one temperature instead of two as is needed when heat transfer by both radiation and convection must be considered. The Adiabatic Surface Temperature is defined as the temperature of a surface which cannot absorb or lose heat to the environment, i.e. a perfect insulator. Accordingly, the AST is a weighted mean temperature of the radiation temperature and the gas temperature depending on the heat transfer coefficients. A determining factor for introducing the concept of AST is that it can be measured with a cheap and robust method called the plate thermometer (PT), even under harsh fire conditions. Alternative methods for measuring thermal exposure under similar conditions involve water cooled heat flux meters that are in most realistic situations difficult to use and very costly and impractical. This paper presents examples concerning how the concept of AST can be used in practice both in reaction-to-fire tests and in large scale scenarios where structures are exposed to high and inhomogeneous temperature conditions.

Nowadays, external isolation is highly recommended for both building renovation and new building construction. This isolation requires the installation of structure protecting the insulating materials from the humidity and weather variations. One of the current techniques is the installation of ventilated facades. The recovered energy by this process could be used in winter for the preheating of ventilated air or could be evacuated in summer to protect the building from potential overheating. This study describes the design and application of Hot Box developed specifically to test the thermal performance of a ventilated bioclimatic wall. Based on experiments test, this paper discusses the experimental set-up and the thermal metrology. Data collected from testing a ventilated wall were used to estimate the convection heat transfer coefficients of the ventilated wall.
