Heat Transfer Enhancement in a Double Pipe Heat Exchanger by Insertion of Propeller-Type Swirl Generators

This paper describes an experimental study of turbulent convective heat transfer and flow friction characteristics in a double tube heat exchanger equipped with propellers (2 blade-type). The propellers are used as the decaying swirl generators in the inner tube. The experiments were performed using the propellers with four different interval lengths (l = 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D where D is diameter of the inner tube), for the Reynolds number ranging from 5000 to 32,000, using water with temperature of 27°C and 70°C as cold and hot working fluids, respectively. The data of the tube equipped with the propellers are reported together with those of the plain tube, for comparison. The obtained results demonstrate that the heat transfer rate in term of Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) in the tube with propellers are higher than those in the plain tube at the similar operating conditions. This is due to the chaotic mixing and efficient interruption of thermal boundary layer caused by the propellers. In addition, the Nusselt number and friction factor in the tube fitted with the propellers increase as the interval length decreases. Depending on Reynolds number and interval length, Nusselt numbers and friction factors in the tube fitted with the propellers are augmented to 1.95 to 2.3 times and 5.8 to 13.2 times of those in the plain tube. In addition, the correlations of the Nusselt number (Nu) and the friction factor (f) for tube fitted with the propellers are reported and the performance evaluation to access the real benefits of using the turbulators is also determined.

This paper investigates the convective heat transfer in a heat exchanger equipped with twisted tape elements to examine effects of the twisted tape truncation percentage, pitch value, position and Reynolds number using 3D numerical simulation. A symmetric heat flux is applied around the tube as the studied heat exchanger. Based on the influences in both heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop, the performance evaluation criterion (PEC) is utilized. Inserting twisted tape elements and reducing the pitch value significantly augment the Nusselt number, friction coefficient and PEC number compared to the plain tube. For the best case with a Reynolds number of 1000, the average Nusselt number increases by almost 151%, which is the case of fully fitted twisted tape at a pitch value of L/4. Moreover, increasing the twisted tape truncation percentage reduces both heat transfer and pressure drop. Furthermore, the highest heat transfer rate is achieved when the truncated twisted tape is located at the entrance of the tube. Finally, it is concluded that for P = L, L/2, L/3 and L/4, the optimum cases from the viewpoint of energy conservation are twisted tapes with truncation percentages of 75, 50, 50 and 0%, in which the related PEC numbers at a Reynolds number of 1000 are almost equal to 1.08, 1.24, 1.4 and 1.76, respectively.

The present work experimentally investigates the characteristics of convective heat transfer in horizontal shell and coil heat exchangers in addition to friction factor for fully developed flow through the helically coiled tube (HCT). The majority of previous studies were performed on HCTs with isothermal and isoflux boundary conditions or shell and coil heat exchangers with small ranges of HCT configurations and fluid operating conditions. Here, five heat exchangers of counter-flow configuration were constructed with different HCT-curvature ratios (δ) and tested at different mass flow rates and inlet temperatures of the two sides of the heat exchangers. Totally, 295 test runs were performed from which the HCT-side and shell-side heat transfer coefficients were calculated. Results showed that the average Nusselt numbers of the two sides of the heat exchangers and the overall heat transfer coefficients increased by increasing coil curvature ratio. The average increase in the average Nusselt number is of 160.3–80.6% for the HCT side and of 224.3–92.6% for the shell side when δ increases from 0.0392 to 0.1194 within the investigated ranges of different parameters. Also, for the same flow rate in both heat exchanger sides, the effect of coil pitch and number of turns with the same coil torsion and tube length is remarkable on shell average Nusselt number while it is insignificant on HCT-average Nusselt number. In addition, a significant increase of 33.2–7.7% is obtained in the HCT-Fanning friction factor (fc) when δ increases from 0.0392 to 0.1194. Correlations for the average Nusselt numbers for both heat exchanger sides and the HCT Fanning friction factor as a function of the investigated parameters are obtained.

Trefoil-hole baffles have good thermo-hydraulic performances as the support of heat pipes, however the published research paper is relatively limited. The present paper investigates the shellside thermo-hydraulic characteristics of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with trefoil-hole baffles (THB-STHX) under turbulent flow region, and the variations of shellside Nusselt number, pressure loss and overall thermo-hydraulic performance (PEC) with Reynolds number are obtained for baffles of varied pitch with the numerical method. CFD results demonstrate that the trefoil-hole baffle could enhance the heat transfer rate of shell side effectively, and the maximal average Nusselt number is augmented by ~2.3 times that of no baffle, while average pressure loss increases by ~9.6 times. The PEC value of shell side lies in the range of 16.3 and 73.8 kPa-1, and drops with the increment of Reynolds number and the decrement of baffle pitch, which indicates that the heat exchanger with trefoil-hole baffles of larger pitch could generate better overall performance at low Reynolds number. Moreover, the contours of velocity, turbulent intensity and temperature are presented for discussions. It is found that shellside high-speed jet, intensive recirculation flow and high turbulence level could enhance the heat transfer rate effectively. Besides good performance, THB-STHXs are easily manufactured, thus promise widely applied in various industries.

Experimental research was conducted to reveal the effects of nanofluids on heat transfer performance in a double-tube heat exchanger. With nanoparticle weight fraction of 0.5-2.0% and Reynolds number of 4500-14500, the flow resistance and heat transfer were analyzed by using six nanofluids, i.e., CuO-water, Al2O3-water, Fe3O4-water, ZnO-water, SiC-water, SiO2-water nanofluids. Results show that SiC-water nanofluid with a weight concentration of 1.5% provides the best improvement of heat transfer performance. 1.0% CuO-water and 0.5% SiO2-water nanofluids have lower friction factors in the range of Reynolds number from 4500-14500 compared to the other nanofluids. Based on test results of heat transfer performance and flow resistance, the 1.0% CuO-water nanofluid shows a great advantage due to a relatively high heat transfer performance and a low friction factor. Finally, empirical formulae of Nusselt numbers for various nanofluids were established based on experimental data tested in the double-tube heat exchanger.

In the present paper, flow and heat transfer characteristics of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with continuous helical baffles (CH-STHX) is experimentally studied. Correlations for heat transfer and pressure drop, which are estimated by Nusselt number and friction factor, are fitted by experiment data for thermal design. Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) method is also used to compare the heat transfer and flow performance of STHX with continuous helical baffles (CH-STHX), STHX with combined helical baffles (CMH-STHX) and STHX with discontinuous helical baffles (DCH-STHX). The numerical results show that, for the same Reynolds number, the Nusselt numbers Nuo of the CMH-STHX and CH-STHX is about 37.6%, 78.2% higher than that of the DCH-STHX; the friction factor fo of the CH-STHX is about 14.8% and 150.2% higher than that of CMH-STHX and DCH-STHX. If the velocity ratios RCMH, CH and RDCH, CH are bigger than 1.55 and 4.0 in the Nusselt number range from 40 to 70, the CMH-STHX and the DCH-STHX may have higher Nusselt numbers than the CH-STHX for the same mass flow rate in the shell side.

In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulations with renormalization-group (RNG) k-ε model are performed for the air-side heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of wavy fin-and-tube heat exchanger with delta winglet vortex generators. The Reynolds number based on the tube outside diameter varies from 500 to 5000. The effects of different geometrical parameters with varying attack angle of delta winglet (β=30 deg, β=45 deg, and β=60 deg), tube row number (2–4), and wavy angle of the fin (θ=0–20 deg) are examined. The numerical results show that each delta winglet generates a downstream main vortex and a corner vortex. The longitudinal vortices are disrupted by the downstream wavy trough and only propagate a short distance along the main flow direction but the vortices greatly enhance the heat transfer in the wake region behind the tube. Nusselt number and friction factor both increase with the increase in the attack angle β, and the case of β=30 deg has the maximum value of j/f. The effects of the tube row number on Nusselt number and friction factor are very small, and the heat transfer and fluid flow become fully developed very quickly. The case of θ=5 deg has the minimum value of Nusselt number, while friction factor always increases with the increase in wavy angle. The application of delta winglet enhances the heat transfer performance of the wavy fin-and-tube heat exchanger with modest pressure drop penalty.

The hydrothermal performance of multiple semi-twisted tape inserts inside a heat exchanger pipe is numerically examined in three-dimensions. This study aims to find the optimum case for having the highest heat transfer enhancement with the lowest friction factor using nanofluid (Al2O3/water). A performance evaluation criterion (PEC) is defined to characterize the performance based on both friction factor and heat transfer. It was found that increasing the number of semi-twisted tapes increases the number of swirl flow streams and leads to an enhancement in the local Nusselt number as well as the friction factor. The average Nusselt number increases from 15.13 to 28.42 and the average friction factor enhances from 0.022 to 0.052 by increasing the number of the semi-twisted tapes from 0 to 4 for the Reynolds number of 1000 for the base fluid. By using four semi-twisted tapes, the average Nusselt number increases from 12.5 to 28.5, while the friction factor reduces from 0.155 to 0.052 when the Reynolds number increases from 250 to 1000 for the base fluid. For the Reynolds number of 1000, the increase in nanofluid concentration from 0 to 3% improves the average Nusselt number and friction factor by 6.41% and 2.29%, respectively. The highest PEC is equal to 1.66 and belongs to the Reynolds number of 750 using four semi-twisted tape inserts with 3% nanoparticles. This work offers instructions to model an advanced design of twisted tape integrated with tubes using multiple semi-twisted tapes, which helps to provide a higher amount of energy demand for solar applications.

The present investigation constitutes CFD analysis of the heat transmission phenomenon in a tube heat exchanger with a Y-shaped insert with triangular perforation. The analysis is accomplished by considering air as a working fluid with a Reynolds number ranging from 3000 to 21,000. The segment considered for analysis consists of a circular tube of 68 mm diameter and 1.5 m length. The geometrical parameter considered is the perforation index (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%). The constant heat flux is provided at the tube wall and a pressure-based solver is used for the solution. The studies are performed for analyzing the effects of inserts on the heat transfer and friction factor in the circular tube heat exchanger which results in augmented heat transfer at a higher perforation index (PI) and lower friction factor. The investigation results show that the highest heat transfer is 5.84 times over a simple plain tube and the maximum thermal performance factor (TPF) is 3.25 at PI = 30%, Re = 3000.

The forced convective heat transfer behavior of a turbulent air flow, steady and Newtonian over a fin and oval-tube heat exchanger has been examined numerically. Where, the effect of the tube tilt angle (α) on the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor was tested. The inclination angle of the oval-tubes going from 0° (Baseline case) to 90° with a step of 10°. The fluid flows and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.000 to 12.000. All investigations are carried out with the help of the CFD ANSYS Fluent. Heat transfer coefficient results in the term of the Nusselt number are validated with the available experimental data and a maximum deviation of 9 % is observed. Reasonable agreement is found. The obtained results show that the tube's inclination angle of 20° is the best design which significantly removes the hot spots behind the tubes, thus giving an increase in the heat transfer coefficient of 13 % compared to the baseline case. In addition, useful correlations are developed to predict Nusselt number and friction factor in the fin and oval-tube heat exchanger.

In the present work, the effects of insertion of helical screw tape on heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop in a concentric double tube heat exchanger are experimentally investigated. The heat exchanger has the outer (steel) and inner (copper) tube diameters of 50 mm and 25 mm respectively. The helical screw tape of diameter 19 mm is inserted into the inner tube to increase turbulence which helped to increase the heat transfer rate. The hot water was flowed through the inner tube and cold water was flowed in annulus. The helical screw tape was inserted in 1/3rd length and full length of the tube. The experiments are based on Reynolds number at tube inlet, ranging from 10000 to 42855. The experimental results show that the average Nusselt numbers and friction factors are respectively, 1.41 and 2.08 times over the plain tube for 1/3rd length insert and 1.87 and 4.31 times over the plain tube for full length insert. Furthermore, the enhancement ratio of the helical screw tape varies between 1.03 and 1.17, 1.02 and 1.26 for 1/3rd length insert and full length insert, respectively.
