Brain Deformation in Linear Head Impact

In this study, a 2D model of the head underwent linear impact and the experiments were simulated by finite element models. A cylinder with a diameter of 100mm and height of 20mm was filled with 5% gelatin, which was used as the brain surrogate material. The physical model was mounted onto a High Speed Computer Controlled Impact System to generate inertial loading of approximately 50 G average deceleration. The deformation of the samples was studied through image processing. Finite element (FE) analysis was used to simulate the experiments. The impact tests were modeled with two methods: a Lagrangian formulation with single point integration and an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation with single point integration and void using LS-Dyna FE code. In the model with slip contact, the normal and shear strains reached more than 20% in some regions, which confirmed the risk of axonal injury in the linear impacts applied in this study. It was seen that in the Lagrangian models, in order to stabilize the simulation, high bulk moduli needed to be used; however, this resulted in much smaller void generation in the posterior region of the model. It was shown that the void generation reaches the experimental values by introducing 1–2 mm initial gaps between brain and skull. The ALE model was more stable and less sensitive to the bulk modulus, but showed smaller deformations.

Numerical simulation and prediction of short duration hydrodynamic impact loading on a generic wedge impacting a water free-surface is investigated. The fluid field is modeled using a finite element (FE) based arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation and the structure is modeled using a standard Lagrangian FE approximation. Validation of the numerical method against experimental test data and closed form analytical solutions shows that the ALE-FE/FE continuum approach captures the impact behavior accurately. A detailed sensitivity analysis is conducted to study the role of air compressibility, deadrise angle, and impact velocity in estimation of maximum impact pressures. The pressure field is found to be insensitive to air compressibility effect for a wide range of impact velocities and deadrise angles. A semi-analytical prediction model is developed for estimation of maximum impact pressures that correlates deadrise angle, impact velocity, and a nonlinear interaction term that couples hydrodynamic effects between these parameters. The numerical method is also used to examine the intrinsic physics of water impact on a high-speed planing hull with the goal of predicting slamming loads and resulting motions.

Abstract A finite element formulation to solve the dynamic behavior of high-speed Shinkansen cars, rail, and bridge is given. A mechanical model to express the interaction between wheel and rail is described, in which the impact of the rail on the flange of wheel is also considered. The bridge is modeled by using various finite elements such as shell, beam, solid, spring, and mass. The equations of motions of bridge and Shinkansen cars are solved under the constitutive and constraint equations to express the interaction between rail and wheel. Numerical method based on a modal transformation to get the dynamic response effectively is discussed. A finite element program for the dynamic response analysis of Shinkansen cars, rail, and bridge at the high-speed running has been developed. Numerical examples are also demonstrated.

Cold spray is a rapidly developing coating technology for depositing materials in the solid state. In this deposition process, the spray particles are accelerated to a high velocity by a high-speed gas flow, and then form a dense and high quality coating due to plastic deformation of particles impinged upon the solid surface of substrate. 2D and 3D modelling of particle impacting behaviours in cold spray deposition process by using ABAQUS/Explicit was conducted for four couples of materials (i.e. impacting particle/impacted substrate): copper/aluminium, aluminium/copper, copper/copper, and aluminium/aluminium. A systematic analysis of a single impact was carried out considering different parameters, such as the initial impact velocity, initial temperature and contact angle, which affect the deposition process and subsequently the mechanical properties of coating. Three numerical methods have been evaluated and their performances are discussed for various simulation settings: (i) modelling in a Lagrangian reference frame; (ii) modelling using adaptive remeshing in an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) reference frame; and (iii), modelling in a CEL reference frame. It is found that the Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian (CEL) method has more advantages to simulate the large deformation of materials, and is also more efficient to prevent the excessive distortion of the mesh. A comparison between simulation results and experimental data from the literature was performed. Nevertheless, the CEL method is implicitly isothermal for ABAQUS v6.10, whereas the modelling in the classical Lagrangian reference frame does include coupled thermo-mechanical effects with a local increase of the temperature near the interface — due to friction — and for the highly plastically deformed elements — due to the heat dissipation linked to plasticity. A local rise of temperature at the impact surface may also be observed for oblique impacts. Finally a first attempt to simulate the deposition of several particles is made with a 3D CEL model, resulting in the creation of porosity at the interface between particles.

Blunt traumatic rupture of the carotid artery is a rare but life threatening injury. The histology of the artery is key to understanding the aetiology of this injury. The carotid artery is composed of three layers known as the tunica intima, media, and adventitia, with distinct biomechanical properties. In order to examine the behaviour of the carotid artery under external load we have developed a three layer finite element model of this vessel. A rubber-like material model from LS-DYNA was selected for the FE model. The Arbitrary-Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) approach was adopted to simulate the interaction between the fluid (blood) and the structure (carotid). To verify the FE model, the impact bending tests are simulated using this FE model. Simulation results agree with tests results well. Furthermore, the mechanical behaviour of carotid artery tissues under impact loading were revealed by the simulations. The results provide a basis for a more in-depth investigation of the carotid artery in vehicle crashes. In addition, it provides a basis for further work on aortic tissue finite element modeling.

In high-speed gear drive and power transmission, system impact failure mode always occurs due to the sudden impact and shock loading during the system in running. Therefore, study on the amount of impact energy that can be absorbed by a gear is vital. Impact test equipment has been designed and modelled for the purpose to study the impact energy on gear tooth. This paper mainly focused on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of impact energy that occurred during simulation involving the impact test equipment modelling. The simulation was conducted using Abaqus software on critical parts of the test equipment to simulate the impact event and generate impact data for analysis. The load cell in the model was assumed to be free fall at a certain height which gives impact load to the test gear. Three different type of material for the test gear were set up in this simulation. Results from the simulation show that each material possesses different impact energy characteristic. Impact energy values increased along with the height of load drop. AISI 1040 were found to be the toughest material at 3.0m drop that could withstand up to 44.87N.m of impact energy. These data will be used to validate data in physical experiments in further study.

Studies on dynamic impact of high-speed trains on long-span bridges are important for the design and evaluation of high-speed railway bridges. The use of the dynamic load factor (DLF) to account for the impact effect has been widely accepted in bridge engineering. Although the field monitoring studies are the most dependable way to study the actual DLF of the bridge, according to previous studies there are few field monitoring data on high-speed railway truss arch bridges. This paper presents an evaluation of DLF based on field monitoring and finite element simulation of Nanjing DaShengGuan Bridge, which is a high-speed railway truss arch bridge with the longest span throughout the world. The DLFs in different members of steel truss arch are measured using monitoring data and simulated using finite element model, respectively. The effects of lane position, number of train carriages, and speed of trains on DLF are further investigated. By using the accumulative probability function of the Generalized Extreme Value Distribution, the probability distribution model of DLF is proposed, based on which the standard value of DLF within 50-year return period is evaluated and compared with different bridge design codes.

High-speed blow forming (HSBF) is a new technology for producing components with complex geometries made of high strength aluminum alloy sheets. HSBF is considered a hybrid-superplastic forming method, which combines crash forming and gas blow forming. Due to its novelty, optimization of the deformation process parameters is essential. In this study, using the finite element (FE) code ABAQUS, thinning of an aluminum component produced by HSBF under different strain rates was investigated. The impact of element size, variation of friction coefficient, and material constitutive model on thinning predictions were determined and quantified. The performance of the FE simulations was validated through forming of industrial size parts with a complex geometry for the three investigated strain rates. The results indicated that the predictions are sensitive to the element size and the coefficient of friction. Remarkably, compared to a conventional power law model, the variable m-value viscoplastic (VmV) model could precisely predict the thickness variation of the industrial size component.

Abstract. The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method is well suited to the modelling, with a relatively small number of elements, of three-dimensional flows exhibiting strong velocity or density gradients. Its performance can be highly enhanced by having recourse to r-adaptivity. Here, a vertical adaptive mesh method is developed for DG finite elements. This method, originally designed for finite difference schemes, is based on the vertical diffusion of the mesh nodes, with the diffusivity controlled by the density jumps at the mesh element interfaces. The mesh vertical movement is determined by means of a conservative Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation. Though conservativity is naturally achieved, tracer consistency is obtained by a suitable construction of the mesh vertical velocity field, which is defined in such a way that it is fully compatible with the tracer and continuity equations at a discrete level. The vertically adaptive mesh approach is implemented in the geophysical and environmental flow model SLIM 3D (www.climate.be/slim). Idealised benchmarks, aimed at simulating the oscillations of a sharp thermocline, are dealt with. Then, the relevance of the vertical adaptivity technique is assessed by simulating thermocline oscillations of Lake Tanganyika. The results are compared to measured vertical profiles of temperature, showing similar stratification and outcropping events.

The objective of this work is to understand the coupling of fluid dynamics and heat transfer during the impact of a millimeter-size water droplet on a flat, solid glass substrate. In this work, a finite-element model is presented which simulates the transient fluid dynamics and heat transfer during the droplet deposition process, considering Laplace forces on the liquid-gas boundary, and the dynamics of wetting. A novel, experimental laser-based method is used to measure temperatures at the solid-liquid interface. This method is based on a thermoreflectance technique and provides unprecedented temporal and spatial resolutions of 1 microsecond and 20 micrometer, respectively. Matching between simulations, temperature measurements and high-speed visualization allows the determination of the interfacial heat transfer coefficient.
