Vibrational Analysis of a Dual-Motive Locomotive and Evaluation by Experimental Methods and Modal Analysis

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study done on an electro-diesel locomotive in order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of the vehicle in terms of safety, running performance and wheel-track interaction. The vibration analysis has been made by means of different experimental methodologies. The first one consists on the acquisition of accelerations at points located at the wheelset, the truck frame and the coach, using piezorresistive accelerometers. The registered signals allow to validate the locomotive in terms of safety against derailment and running behavior, according the UIC 518 leaflet. The second method is based on the modal analysis theory and includes the dynamic properties estimation under vibrational excitation. This procedure takes into account the determination of modal parameters such as natural frequencies, modal damping ratios and mode shapes, by means of a control hydraulic actuator. The third methodology consists on the operational modal analysis done with the experimental measurements acquired on track tests, in order to validate the results obtained by modal analysis and evaluate the dynamic behavior under different speed ranges and cant deficiencies. Several tests have been done by means of the described methods in an electro-diesel locomotive composed by a primary suspension with dampers and a secondary suspension with rigid stiffness. In addition, two types of dampers have been evaluated with the purpose of optimizing the damping properties of the vehicle’s primary suspension. Through these experimental methods, a useful tool for the prediction and analysis of the dynamic behavior is provided. Additionally, the results obtained by means of these methodologies permit examining the influence of different running conditions and vehicle properties on the modal parameters.

Previous studies have demonstrated the sensitivity of the dynamic behavior of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) material over the carbon fiber direction by performing uniaxial excitation tests on a simple specimen. However, the variations in modal parameters (damping coefficient and resonance frequency) over the direction of carbon fiber have been partially explained in previous studies because all modal parameters have only been calculated using the representative summed frequency response function without modal analysis. In this study, the dynamic behavior of CFRP specimens was identified from experimental modal analysis and compared five CFRP specimens (carbon fiber direction: 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90°) and an isotropic SCS13A specimen using the modal assurance criterion. The first four modes were derived from the SCS13A specimen; they were used as reference modes after verifying with the analysis results from a finite element model. Most of the four mode shapes were found in all CFRP specimens, and the similarity increased when the carbon fiber direction was more than 45°. The anisotropic nature was dominant in three cases of carbon fiber, from 0° to 45°, and the most sensitive case was found in Specimen #3.

Elastomeric bearing is a significant device in structures such as in bridges and buildings. It is used to isolate the ground structure (substructure) and the above ground structure (superstructure) from seismic loads such as earthquake load. Understanding the dynamic behavior of the elastomeric bearing in terms of natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping are increasingly important especially in improving the design and the failure limit of the elastomeric bearing. Modal analysis is one of the methods used to determine the dynamic properties of any materials. Hence, the main objective of this research is to determine the dynamic properties of elastomeric bearing components in terms of natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping via numerical and experimental modal analysis. This method had been successfully performed in investigating the dynamic behavior of rubber and steel shim plate.

The author designed a intelligential spray car of fruit tree, this support frame of worktable support the whole spraying arm in the course, its dynamic properties is important to determine the product quality and life. On the basis of three-dimensional modeling, The modal of dynamic that support frame was analysis and the first ten modal parameters (natural frequencies and mode shapes) was calculated by using ANSYS finite element of analysis software. Compared with Modal parameters by method and experimental modal analysis obtained, summarizes the higher modes of dynamic structure, and proposed modifications for the structure.

This paper presents a dynamic behavior analysis of an old cable-stayed footbridge over river Vrbasin Banja Luka. Identification of modal parameters, of this prone to vibrations footbridge structure,was performed using Operational Modal Analysis with Frequency Domain Decomposition method.Experimental test setups and obtained results, compared to the numerical values obtained by FEmodel updating, are shown. Modal Assurance Criterion was used for the confirmation of theuniqueness of experimentally obtained mode shapes, and also for the comparison of FE model modeshapes to the experimentally obtained ones, in the locations of measurement.

Abstract Experimental modal analysis of a violin with three different tensions of a bass bar has been performed. The bass bar tension is the only intentionally introduced modification of the instrument. The aim of the study was to find differences and similarities between top plate modal parameters determined by a bass bar perfectly fitting the shape of the top plate, the bass bar with a tension usually applied by luthiers (normal), and the tension higher than the normal value. In the modal analysis four signature modes are taken into account. Bass bar tension does not change the sequence of mode shapes. Changes in modal damping are insignificant. An increase in bass bar tension causes an increase in modal frequencies A0 and B(1+) and does not change the frequencies of modes CBR and B(1-).

Investigations of the dynamic behavior of structures have become increasingly important in the design process of mechanical systems. To have a better understanding of the dynamic behavior of a structure, the knowledge of the modal parameters is very important. The powerful method of experimental modal analysis has been used to measure modal parameters in many mechanical engineering problems. But the method was mainly applied to nonrotating structures. This presentation shows improvements of the classical modal analysis for a successful application in rotating machinery with nonconservative effects. An example is given, investigating the modal parameters of an elastic rotor with oil film bearings.

Vibrations are usually induced in aero engines under their normal operating conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the critical frequencies of the rotating components carefully. Blade deformation of a jet engine under its normal operating conditions due to fatigue or bird strike is a realistic possibility. This puts the deformed blade as one of the major safety concerns in commercially operating civil aviation. A bird strike introduces unbalanced forces and non-linearities into the engine rotor system. Such dynamic behavior is a primary cause of catastrophic failures. The introduction of unbalanced forces due to a deformed blade, as a result of a bird strike, can change the critical frequency behavior of engine rotor systems. Therefore, it is necessary to predict their critical frequencies and dynamic behavior carefully. The simplified approach of the one-dimensional and two-dimensional elements can be used to predict critical frequencies and critical mode shapes in many cases, but the use of three-dimensional elements is the best method to achieve the goals of a modal analysis. This research explores the effect of a bird strike on the critical frequencies of an engine rotor. The changes in critical mode shapes and critical frequencies as a result of a bird strike on an engine blade are studied in this research. Commercially available analysis software ANSYS version 18.2 is used in this study. In order to account for the material nonlinearities, a Johnson Cook material model is used for the fan blades and an isotropic–elastic–plastic–hydrodynamic material model is used for modeling the bird. The bird strike event is analyzed using Eularian and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) techniques. A difference of 0.1% is noted in the results of both techniques. In the modal analysis simulation of the engine rotor before and after the bird strike event, the critical failure modes remain same. However, a change in the critical frequencies of the modes is observed. An increase in the critical frequencies and excitation RPMs (revolution per minute) of each mode are observed. As the mode order is increased, the higher the rise in critical frequency and excitation RPMs. Also, a change in the whirl direction of the different modes is noted.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to highlight that the need for improved system identification methods within the domain of modal analysis increases under the impulse of the broadening field of applications, e.g., damage detection and vibro-acoustics, and the increased complexity of today’s structures. Although significant research efforts during the last two decades have resulted in an extensive number of parametric identification algorithms, most of them are certainly not directly applicable for modal parameter extraction. So, based on this, the aim of the present work is to develop a technique for modal parameter extraction from the measured signal. Design/methodology/approach A survey and classification of the different modal analysis methods are made; however, the focus of this thesis is placed on modal parameter extraction from measured time signal. Some of the methods are examined in detail, including both single-degree-of-freedom and multi-degree-of-freedom approaches using single and global frequency-response analysis concepts. The theory behind each of these various analysis methods is presented in depth, together with the development of computer programs, theoretical and experimental examples and discussion, in order to evaluate the capabilities of those methods. The problem of identifying properties of structures that possess close modes is treated in particular detail, as this is a difficult situation to handle and yet a very common one in many structures. It is essential to obtain a good model for the behavior of the structure in order to pursue various applications of experimental modal analysis (EMA), namely: updating of finite element models, structural modification, subsystem-coupling and calculation of real modes from complex modes, to name a few. This last topic is particularly important for the validation of finite element models, and for this reason, a number of different methods to calculate real modes from complex modes are presented and discussed in this paper. Findings In this paper, Modal parameters like mode shapes and natural frequencies are extracted using an FFT analyzer and with the help of ARTeMiS, and subsequently, an algorithm has been developed based on frequency domain decomposition (FDD) technique to check the accuracy of the results as obtained from ARTeMiS. It is observed that the frequency domain-based algorithm shows good agreement with the extracted results. Hence the following conclusion may be drawn: among several frequency domain-based algorithms for modal parameter extraction, the FDD technique is more reliable and it shows a very good agreement with the experimental results. Research limitations/implications In the case of extraction techniques using measured data in the frequency domain, it is reported that the model using derivatives of modal parameters performed better in many situations. Lack of accurate and repeatable dynamic response measurements on complex structures in a real-life situation is a challenging problem to analyze exact modal parameters. Practical implications During the last two decades, there has been a growing interest in the domain of modal analysis. Evolved from a simple technique for troubleshooting, modal analysis has become an established technique to analyze the dynamical behavior of complex mechanical structures. Important examples are found in the automotive (cars, trucks, motorcycles), railway, maritime, aerospace (aircrafts, satellites, space shuttle), civil (bridges, buildings, offshore platforms) and heavy equipment industry. Social implications Presently structural health monitoring has become a significantly important issue in the area of structural engineering particularly in the context of safety and future usefulness of a structure. A lot of research is being carried out in this area incorporating the modern sophisticated instrumentations and efficient numerical techniques. The dynamic approach is mostly employed to detect structural damage, due to its inherent advantage of having global and location-independent responses. EMA has been attempted by many researchers in a controlled laboratory environment. However, measuring input excitation force(s) seems to be very expensive and difficult for the health assessment of an existing real-life structure. So Ambient Vibration Analysis is a good alternative to overcome those difficulties associated with the measurement of input excitation force. Originality/value Three single bay two storey frame structure has been chosen for the experiment. The frame has been divided into six small elements. An algorithm has been developed to determine the natural frequency of those frame structures of which one is undamaged and the rest two damages in single element and double element, respectively. The experimental results from ARTeMIS and from developed algorithm have been compared to verify the effectiveness of the developed algorithm. Modal parameters like mode shapes and natural frequencies are extracted using an FFT analyzer and with the help of ARTeMiS, and subsequently, an algorithm has been programmed in MATLAB based on the FDD technique to check the accuracy of the results as obtained from ARTeMiS. Using singular value decomposition, the power Spectral density function matrix is decomposed using the MATLAB program. It is observed that the frequency domain-based algorithm shows good consistency with the extracted results.

AbstractIn this paper, the dynamic properties of a point-supported cross-laminated timber slab are studied in order to determine the elastic material parameters on this basis. A detailed experimental modal analysis of the slab with dimensions 16.0 m x 11.0 m is performed, and seven modes including the natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shape components at 651 sensor positions are identified. The found mode shapes are complex due to environmental influences that occurred during the two-day measurement campaign. This error is corrected by eliminating these influences. A finite element model of the slab is presented, whose parameters in terms of material properties and boundary conditions are determined by a model updating procedure. Based on the modal properties of the seven experimentally identified modes, an accurate and robust parameter set is obtained, which can be used in further numerical studies of the considered CLT to check serviceability limit criteria.

In this study, we introduce the concept of dynamicsbased visual inspection with High-Frame-Rate (HFR) video analysis as a novel non-destructive active sensing method for verifying dynamic properties of a vibrating object. The HFR video is used for determining the structural dynamic properties of an object, such as its resonant frequencies and mode shapes, which can be estimated as modal parameters by modal analysis only when the object is excited. By improving and implementing a fast output-only modal parameter estimation algorithm on a real-time 2000-fps vision platform, the modal parameters of an excited object are simultaneously estimated as its input-invariant dynamic properties for dynamics-based visual inspection evenwhen the objects undergo different excitation conditions. Our simultaneous 2000-fps visual inspection system can facilitate non-destructive and longterm monitoring of the structures of beam-shaped objects vibrating at dozens or hundreds of hertz, and it can detect small changes in the dynamic properties of these objects caused by internal defects such as fatigue cracks in real time, even when their static appearances are similar. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed 2000-fps simultaneous dynamics-based visual inspection approach, the resonant frequencies and mode shapes for beam-shaped cantilevers with different artificial cracks and weights, excited by human finger tapping, were estimated in real time.
