Evaluating the Effect of Nozzle Weld Stiffness When Using Shell Finite Element Models for ASME Code Evaluations

Typically the use of SHELL finite elements to model nozzle/vessel interfaces will not include details of the weld at the interface. The omission of the weld details from SHELL element models is due to the difficulty in implementing such details and the assumption that additional interface stiffness due to the weld will have a negligible effect on results at locations of interest for Code evaluation. This study will demonstrate a proposed method for modeling weld details with SHELL elements and then evaluate the magnitude of the weld stiffness effect on results and Code compliance. The method of modeling the weld details with SHELL elements used in this study will follow the guidance provided by ASME BPVC Section VIII, Division 2, Annex 5.A [2] for such interfaces. Models of nozzle/vessel interfaces will be shown comparing results of SOLID element models with and without the weld detail, and then SHELL element models both with and without the weld detail. The results from these models will be evaluated and recommendations for future modeling and evaluation of nozzle/shell interfaces with SHELL elements will be offered.

A specialized shell-intersection finite element, which is compatible with adjoining shell elements, has been developed and has the capability of physically representing the complex three-dimensional geometry and stress state at shell intersections (Koves, 1993). The element geometry is a contoured shape that matches a wide variety of practical nozzle configurations used in ASME Code pressure vessel construction, and allows computational rigor. A closed-form theory of elasticity solution was used to compute the stress state and strain energy in the element. The concept of an energy-equivalent nodal displacement and force vector set was then developed to allow complete compatibility with adjoining shell elements and retain the analytical rigor within the element. This methodology provides a powerful and robust computation scheme that maintains the computational efficiency of shell element solutions. The shell-intersection element was then applied to the cylinder-sphere and cylinder-cylinder intersection problems.

The ASME Code Section III and Section VIII (Division 2) provide stress classification guidelines to interpret the results of a linear elastic finite element analysis. These guidelines enable the splitting of the generated stresses into primary, secondary and peak. The code gives some examples to explain the suggested procedures. Although these examples may reflect a wide range of applications in the field of pressure vessel and piping, the guidelines are difficult to use with complex geometries. In this paper, the r-node method is used to investigate the primary stresses and their locations in both simple and complex geometries. The method is verified using the plane beam and axisymmetric torispherical head. Also, the method is applied to analyze 3D straight and oblique nozzle modeled using both solid and shell elements. The results of the analysis of the oblique nozzle are compared with recently published experimental data.

An improved 8-node shell finite element applicable for the geometrically linear and nonlinear analyses of plates and shells is presented. Based on previous first-order shear deformation theory, the finite element model is further improved by the combined use of assumed natural strains and different sets of collocation points for the interpolation of the different strain components. The influence of the shell element with various conditions such as locations, number of enhanced membranes, and shear interpolation is also identified. By using assumed natural strain method with proper interpolation functions, the present shell element generates neither membrane nor shear locking behavior even when full integration is used in the formulation. Furthermore, to characterize the efficiency of these modifications of the 8-node shell finite elements, numerical studies are carried out for the geometrically linear and non-linear analysis of plates and shells. In comparison to some other shell elements, numerical examples for the methodology indicate that the modified element described locking-free behavior and better performance. More specifically, the numerical examples of annular plate presented herein show good validity, efficiency, and accuracy to the developed nonlinear shell element.

There is a potential for major damage to the pipelines crossing faults, therefore the strain-based design method is essential for the design of buried pipelines. Finite element models based on soil springs which are able to accurately predict pipelines’ responses to such faulting are recommended by some international guidelines. In this paper, a comparative analysis was carried out among four widely used models (beam element model; shell element model with fixed boundary; shell element model with beam coupled; shell element model with equivalent boundary) in two aspects: differences of results and the efficiency of calculation. The results show that the maximum and minimum strains of models coincided with each other under allowable strain and the calculation efficiency of beam element model was the highest. Besides, the shell element model with beam coupled or equivalent boundary provided the reasonable results and the calculation efficiency of them were higher than the one with fixed boundary. In addition, shell element model with beam coupled had a broader applicability.

This article, a companion to the article by Philippe G. Ciarlet on the mathematical modelling of shells also in this issue of Acta Numerica, focuses on numerical issues raised by the analysis of shells.Finite element procedures are widely used in engineering practice to analyse the behaviour of shell structures. However, the concept of ‘shell finite element’ is still somewhat fuzzy, as it may correspond to very different ideas and techniques in various actual implementations. In particular, a significant distinction can be made between shell elements that are obtained via the discretization of shell models, and shell elements – such as the general shell elements – derived from 3D formulations using some kinematic assumptions, without the use of any shell theory. Our first objective in this paper is to give a unified perspective of these two families of shell elements. This is expected to be very useful as it paves the way for further thorough mathematical analyses of shell elements. A particularly important motivation for this is the understanding and treatment of the deficiencies associated with the analysis of thin shells (among which is the locking phenomenon). We then survey these deficiencies, in the framework of the asymptotic behaviour of shell models. We conclude the article by giving some detailed guidelines to numerically assess the performance of shell finite elements when faced with these pathological phenomena, which is essential for the design of improved procedures.

In this paper local elastic and geometric stiffness matrices of ashell finite element are presented and discussed. The shell finiteelement is a rectangular plane element, specifically designedfor the so-called constrained finite element method. One of themost notable features of the proposed shell finite element isthat two perpendicular (in-plane) directions are distinguished,which is resulted in an unusual combination of otherwise classicshape functions. An important speciality of the derived stiffnessmatrices is that various options are considered, whichallows the user to decide how to consider the through-thicknessstress-strain distributions, as well as which second-order strainterms to consider from the Green-Lagrange strain matrix. Thederivations of the stiffness matrices are briefly summarizedthen numerical examples are provided. The numerical examplesillustrate the effect of the various options, as well as theyare used to prove the correctness of the proposed shell elementand of the completed derivations.

Abstract In the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, nozzle reinforcement rules for nozzles attached to shells under external pressure differ from the rules for internal pressure. ASME BPVC Section I, Section VIII Division 1 and Section VIII Division 2 (Pre-2007 Edition) reinforcement rules for external pressure are less stringent than those for internal pressure. The reinforcement rules for external pressure published since the 2007 Edition of ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 2 are more stringent than those for internal pressure. The previous rule only required reinforcement for external pressure to be one-half of the reinforcement required for internal pressure. In the current BPVC Code the required reinforcement is inversely proportional to the allowable compressive stress for the shell under external pressure. Therefore as the allowable drops, the required reinforcement increases. Understandably, the rules for external pressure differ in these two Divisions, but the amount of required reinforcement can be significantly larger. This paper will examine the possible conservatism in the current Division 2 rules as compared to the other Divisions of the BPVC Code and the EN 13445-3. The paper will review the background of each method and provide finite element analyses of several selected nozzles and geometries.

Presented paper deals with modelling of a twisted blade with rhombic shroud as one-dimensional continuum by means of Rayleigh beam finite elements with varying cross-sectional parameters along the finite elements. The blade is clamped into a rotating rigid disk and the shroud is considered to be a rigid body. Since the finite element models based on the Rayleigh beam theory tend to slightly overestimate natural frequencies and underestimate deflections in comparison with finite element models including shear deformation effects, parameter tuning of the blade is performed.

Finite element simulations can be used to evaluate residual stresses and distortions induced by welding. Such simulations must account for complex interactions between thermal, metallurgical and mechanical phenomena. “Local” simulations are often sufficient for satisfactory predictions of residual stresses in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), but 3D “global” simulations are often necessary to calculate distortions, which can be important even far from the HAZ. In order to avoid such heavy calculations, a special shell element is proposed for the simulation of welding of thin structures. The thermal calculation involves only one nodal degree of freedom but fully accounts for boundary conditions on the faces of the shell. The metallurgical and mechanical calculations are based on a “multi-layer” approach. Due account is taken of transformation plasticity in the mechanical calculation. Numerical results obtained with this approach are compared to those of experiments and some 3D simulation.
