Fluid mixing in lab-on-a-chip devices at laminar flow conditions result in a low mixing index. The reason is dominant diffusion over the convection process. The mixing index can be improved by certain changes in the micromixer structural design like introducing obstacles in the path of fluid flow. These obstacles will make dominant the advection process over the diffusion process. The main contribution of this work is based on proposing the novel hybrid type micromixer design for enhancing the mixing quality. Three non-aligned M-type and non-aligned M-type with obstacles passive type micromixers are analyzed by COMSOL5.5. These designs are hybrid types because different structural changes are combined in a single design for mixing improvement. First of all the straight non-aligned inlets, M-type passive micromixer (SMTM) is analyzed. It is observed that mixing performance is improved because of M-shaped mixing units and non-aligned inlets. This improvement is deemed to be not enough so different shaped obstacles are introduced in the micromixer design. These designs based on obstacles are named horizontal rectangular M-type micromixer, square M-type micromixer, and vertical rectangular M-type micromixer. The mixing index for SMTM, square M-type micromixer, horizontal rectangular M-type micromixer, and vertical rectangular M-type micromixer at Reynolds number Re = 60 is respectively given by 71.1%, 83.21%, 84.45%, and 89.99%. The mixing index of vertical rectangular M-type micromixer was 59.34% − 87.65% for Re = 0.5–100. Vertical rectangular M-type micromixer is concluded with the better-mixing capability design among the proposed ones. Based on these simulation results, the vertical rectangular M-type micromixer design can be utilized for mixing purposes in biomedical applications like nanoparticle synthesis and biomedical sample preparation for drug delivery.

Abstract Detailed understanding the particle mixing and segregation dynamic is essential in successfully designing and reasonably operating multicomponent fluidized bed. In this work, a novel fluorescent tracer technique combining image processing method has been used to investigate the mixing and segregation behavior in a binary fluidized bed with wide size distributions. The particle number percentage in each layer for different gas velocities is obtained by an image processing method. Fluidization, mixing and segregation behavior has been discussed in terms of bed pressure drop, gas velocity and mixing index. Different types of binary particle systems, including the jetsam and the flotsam-rich system, are analyzed and compared. The mixing indexes at different minimum fluidization velocities are also analyzed and compared with other work. The results show that the theoretical minimum fluidization velocity calculated from the bed pressure drop cannot represent the whole fluidization for a wide size distribution binary particle system. The effect of a wide size distribution is an inflection point in the mixing index curve. There is also a dead region in the bottom of the bed that consists of particles with large size and a low degree of sphericity. The particles in the dead region are extraordinarily difficult to fluidize and should be considered in the design of fluidized beds in industrial applications.

Numerical simulations and an optimization method are used to study the design of a planar T-micromixer with curved-shaped baffles in the mixing channel. The mixing efficiency and the pressure loss in the mixing channel have been evaluated for Reynolds number (Re) in the mixing channel in the range 1 to 250. A Mixing index (Mi) has been defined to quantify the mixing efficiency. Three geometric dimensions: radius of baffle, baffles pitch and height of the channel, are taken as design parameters, whereas the mixing index at the outlet section and the pressure loss in the mixing channel are the performance parameters used to optimize the micromixer geometry. To investigate the effect of design and operation parameters on the device performance, a systematic design and optimization methodology is applied, which combines Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with an optimization strategy that integrates Design of Experiments (DOE), Surrogate modeling (SM) and Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) techniques. The Pareto front of designs with the optimum trade-offs of mixing index and pressure loss is obtained for different values of Re. The micromixer can enhance mixing using the mechanisms of diffusion (lower Re) and convection (higher Re) to achieve values over 90%, in particular for Re in the order of 100 that has been found the cost-effective level for volume flow. This study applies a systematic procedure for evaluation and optimization of a planar T-mixer with baffles in the channel that promote transversal 3-D flow as well as recirculation secondary flows that enhance mixing.

The present work proposes a planar micromixer design comprising hybrid mixing modules of split-and-recombine units and curved channels with radial baffles. The mixing performance was evaluated numerically by solving the continuity and momentum equations along with the advection-diffusion equation in a Reynolds number range of 0.1–80. The variance of the concentration of the mixed species was considered to quantify the mixing index. The micromixer showed far better mixing performance over whole Reynolds number range than an earlier split-and-recombine micromixer. The mixer achieved mixing indices greater than 90% at Re ≥ 20 and a mixing index of 99.8% at Re = 80. The response of the mixing quality to the change of three geometrical parameters was also studied. A mixing index over 80% was achieved within 63% of the full length at Re = 20.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to provide a micromixer for achieving effective mixing of two liquids. The mixing of two liquids is difficult to achieve in microfluidic chips because they cannot form turbulence at small dimensions and velocities.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, four kinds of passive micromixers based on splitting–recombination and chaotic convection are compared. First, a better E-shape mixing unit based on the previous F-shape mixing unit has been designed. Then, the E-shape mixing units are further combined to form three micromixers (i.e. E-mixer, SESM and FESM).FindingsFinally, the mixing experimental results show that the mixing indexes of E-mixer, SESM and FESM are more than those of F-mixer when the Reynolds number range is from 0.5 to 100. And at Re = 15, the lowest mixing index of E-mixer is 71%, which is the highest of the four micromixers.Originality/valueAt Re = 80, the highest mixing index of F-mixer and E-mixer is 92 and 94 per cent, respectively, and then it begins to decrease. But the mixing index of SESM and FESM remains close to 100 per cent.

This paper studied a concept of micromixer with a synthetic jet placed at the bottom of a rectangular channel. Due to periodic ejections from and suctions into the channel, the fluids are mixed effectively. To study the effects of the inlet velocity, the jet intensity and frequency, and the jet location on the mixing efficiency, 3-D numerical simulations of the micromixer have been carried out. It has been found that when the jet intensity and the frequency are fixed, the mixing efficiency increases when Re<50, and decreases when Re>50 with the best mixing efficiency achieved at Re=50. When the ratio of the jet velocity magnitude to the inlet velocity is taken as 10 and the jet frequency is 100Hz, the mixing index reaches the highest value. It has also been found that to get better mixing efficiency, the orifice of the synthetic jet should be asymmetrically located away from the channel’s centerline.
