Staphylococcus aureus is the causative agent of multiple infections, including bacteremia, infective endocarditis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and prosthetic device infections. We report here the first whole-genome sequence for four S. aureus sequence type 398 isolates from clinical cases of osteomyelitis in four goats with a history of orthopedic surgery.

ABSTRACT Staphylococcus aureus sequence type 398 (ST398) is a rapidly emerging livestock-associated strain causing zoonotic disease in humans. The course of pathogen evolution remains unclear, prompting whole-genome comparative studies in attempts to elucidate this issue. We present the full, annotated genomes of five newly isolated representative ST398 strains from five major sequence heterogeneity groups of our diverse isolate collection.

ABSTRACT Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type 630 (ST630) and spa type t4549 is an emerging lineage in Nordic countries, and some representatives carry the CRISPR-Cas system. Here, the complete genome sequences of two isolates from this lineage are presented, comprising chromosomes of 2,918,239 and 2,877,083 nucleotides, respectively, and a 2,473-nucleotide plasmid carrying erm(C).

ABSTRACT A carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae isolate was recovered from human blood. Its whole-genome sequence was obtained using Illumina and long-read MinION sequencing. The strain belongs to sequence type 273 (ST273), which was found recently and caused an outbreak in Southeast Asia. It has two carbapenemase genes, bla NDM-1 (carried by an ST7 IncN self-transmissible plasmid) and bla IMP-4 (located on a self-transmissible IncHI5 plasmid). Non-KPC-producing ST237 may represent a lineage of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae , which warrants further monitoring.

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common etiological agents responsible for contagious bovine mastitis. Here, we report the draft whole-genome sequences, with annotations, of 27 S. aureus strains and 3 Staphylococcus species strains that were isolated from Holstein cows with intramammary infection in Canada.

ABSTRACT Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus sequence type 72 (ST72) is prevalent in South Korea and has shown resistance to multiple antimicrobials. ST72 isolates display different levels of resistance to the antistaphylococcal lysostaphin. Draft genome sequencing of ST72 human isolates exhibiting lysostaphin resistance or susceptibility was performed to better understand the mechanism of lysostaphin resistance using subtractive genomics.

Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are skin commensal bacteria. Besides their role in maintaining homeostasis, CoNS have emerged as major pathogens in nosocomial settings. Several studies have investigated the molecular basis for this emergence and identified multiple putative virulence factors with regards to Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity. In the last decade, numerous CoNS whole-genome sequences have been released, leading to the identification of numerous putative virulence factors. Koch’s postulates and the molecular rendition of these postulates, established by Stanley Falkow in 1988, do not explain the microbial pathogenicity of CoNS. However, whole-genome sequence data has shed new light on CoNS pathogenicity. In this review, we analyzed the contribution of genomics in defining CoNS virulence, focusing on the most frequent and pathogenic CoNS species: S. epidermidis, S. haemolyticus, S. saprophyticus, S. capitis, and S. lugdunensis.

ABSTRACT Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) is a bacterium carried by or obtained from swine and other livestock. The initial and predominant swine-associated LA-MRSA sequence type (ST) identified is ST398. Here, we present 14 draft genome sequences from LA-MRSA ST398 isolates found in the United States.

This is the announcement of draft genome sequences for Staphylococcus aureus strains belonging to sequence type 97 (ST97) and ST71. These sequence types are commonly associated with bovine mastitis, and the strains were isolated in Ireland in 2010 from the milk of cows with clinical mastitis.

ABSTRACT We report whole-genome sequences for 10 Listeria monocytogenes sequence type 6 isolates associated with a large listeriosis outbreak in South Africa, which occurred over the period of 2017 to 2018. The possibility of listeriosis spreading beyond South Africa’s borders as a result of exported contaminated food products prompted us to make the genome sequences publicly available.
