Aims: This study was carried out to assess the effect of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) leachate on groundwater quality in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Cross-sectional study was conducted around two dumpsites in Port Harcourt, Nigeria on leachates and borehole water. Study Design: Cross-sectional study of selected refuse dumpsite was conducted in Port Harcourt, Nigeria to assess the effect of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) leachate on groundwater quality in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The physicochemical parameters such as pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Nitrite ion, Phosphate ion, Sulphate ion, Chloride ion and heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Cu) were determined by standard protocol of APHA (2012). The samples were analysed by three quality tools/indices such as the Water Quality Index (WQI), Contamination Factor (CF) and Contamination Degree (CD). Results and Discussion: The result shows that some parameters in the borehole water did not meet the standards of World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ), and most leachates and borehole water qualities near the un-engineered dumpsites are of poor quality. There was a decreasing trend in concentrations of hazardous contaminants from the leachate to nearby borehole water and eventually the distant borehole water. This shows that the leachates exert great effect on the concentrations of contaminants in the surrounding borehole waters and distant ones. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is an increase in risk to the borehole and public health that is reported near the unengineered dumpsites; which can spread to other region on bioaccumulation. The result indicated that the dumpsite leachate is producing many potent contaminants to the environment and to the people nearby.

Abstract This cross-sectional study evaluated the dental caries and its associated factors among domestic waste collectors. A total of 301 adult men who worked for a waste collection corporation were included; 171 men worked in direct contact with domestic solid waste and 130 did not. Sociodemographic data, working and medical history were assessed. The decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index was examined. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with dental status with a significance level of 5%. The overall mean DMFT score was 8.36 ± 5.64. The mean DMFT, missing teeth (MT), and filled teeth (FT) were significantly higher in workers who did not have any direct contact with waste (p ≤ 0.04). In the logistic analysis, DMFT ≥ 8 was only associated with older age (OR = 8.41 [95% confidence interval (95%CI), 5.01–14.12], p < 0.001). Decayed teeth (DT) ≥ 2 was associated with no previous oral hygiene instruction (OR = 2.70 [1.50–4.81], p = 0.001) and no daily dental flossing (OR = 4.26 [1.92–9.43], p < 0.001). MT ≥ 9 was associated with lower education level (OR = 3.33 [1.57–7.10], p = 0.002). FT ≥ 3 had a negative association with low income (OR = 0.42 [0.25–0.70], p < 0.001) and no daily flossing (OR = 0.42 [0.23–0.76], p = 0.004). Occupational exposure to domestic solid waste was not associated with poor dental status. Instead, age, education, income level, and oral hygiene were associated with dental health status. Missing teeth constituted the major component of the DMFT index. Therefore, prevention and oral rehabilitation programs are necessary to improve dental health.

The aim was to describe the profile of workers with occupational multi-site musculoskeletal disorders (MSMSD) and study the relationship between these lesions and socio-professional factors. This is a cross-sectional study involving 254 subjects with occupational musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), identified in the Department of Occupational Medicine at the University Hospital of Mahdia, in Tunisia, over a period of 10 years from 2005 to 2014. The study population was subdivided into two groups; mono-site MSD and multi-site (≥2 sites) groups. Data collection was based on a questionnaire prepared beforehand and covered the description of sociodemographic and professional characteristics. To study psychosocial constraints at work, we have used the Karasek questionnaire. MS-MSD was correlated to the number of dependent children (p=0.02), job/place of work (p=0.00), qualification (p=0.02), taking a rest period (p=0.03), decision latitude (p=0.00), mental demands (p=0.002), social support (p=0.00) and job stress (p=0.04). After binary logistic regression, MS-MSD depended significantly on the number of dependent children (p=0.013; OR=0,33; IC=0,17-0,83), working spouse (p=0.05; OR=0.35; IC=0.12-0.99), job/place of work (p=0.00; OR=4.16; IC=1.95-8.88), qualification (p=0.008; OR=0.28; IC=0.11-0.72), taking a break during work (p=0.04; OR=3.10; IC=1.04-9.22) and social support (p=0.00; OR=7,1; IC=1,9-25,3). When individual risk factors are fixed, the prevention of MS-MSD must target modifiable levers, related to the professional environment of the employees.
