Some Athecate Hydroids From the Shelf Waters of Northern Canada

Sixteen species of athecate hydroids were identified in collections from the shelf waters of northern Canada between the Strait of Belle Isle and the Alaska–Yukon border. This brings the number of athecate species reported from Canada's north coast to 21, and the total number of hydroid species known from the region to 92. One species, Eudendrium caricum Jäderholm 1908 is placed in synonymy with Eudendrium arbusculum Wright 1859. No high-arctic forms were represented, and only eight of the species are panarctic or low-arctic in distribution. Of the remaining species, six occur in boreal as well as subarctic waters, and two have a wide latitudinal range. Five species, Corymorpha groenlandica, Tubularia regalis, Monocoryne gigantea, Rhizogeton nudus, and Hydractinia monocarpa, are recorded in North American waters for the first time. These five, plus Myriothela phrygia, Eudendrium capillare, and the hydroid of Euphysa, are new records for northern Canada.

Based largely on collections from the Calanus–Salvelinus expeditions, 54 species of thecate hydroids were identified from the shelf waters of northern Canada between northeastern Newfoundland and the Alaska–Yukon border. Common species included Halecium muricatum, Calycella syringa, Campanularia integra, C. speciosa, C. volubilis, Gonothyraea loveni, Filellum serpens, Lafoea gracillima, Sertularella polyzonias, S. tricuspidata, Sertularia schmidti, and S. similis. Halecium groenlandicum, H. scutum, Cuspidella procumbens, Calycella gracilis, and Sertularia schmidti are new records for North America; Ptychogena lactea is previously known from this continent only as the medusa. Twenty-two species are reported in northern Canada for the first time, bringing to 71 the number of thecate species recorded from the region. Nearly half of the 71 species recorded are circumpolar in distribution, and over two-thirds transgress both arctic and subarctic zones.Most samples had a paucity of hydroids, particularly those from the high arctic. Collection records indicate that the most favourable regions for hydroids in northern Canada are the Strait of Belle Isle, eastern Ungava Bay, eastern Hudson Strait, northern and southeastern Hudson Bay, Foxe Channel, and northern Foxe Basin.

AbstractRinodinais a widespread, polyphyletic genus of crustosePhysciaceaewithc. 300 species worldwide. A major missing link in understanding its global biogeography has been eastern Asia where the genus has never been systematically revised. Here we review specimen and literature records forRinodinafor north-eastern Asia (Russian Far East, Japan and the Korean Peninsula) and recognize 43 species. We describe two species,R. hypobadiaandR. orientalis, as new to science.Rinodina hypobadiais distinguished by its pigmented hypothecium,Dirinaria-type ascospores and pannarin in both thallus and epihymenium.Rinodina orientalisis characterized by its erumpent apothecia that remain broadly attached, with discs sometimes becoming convex and excluding the thalline margins, ascospores belonging to thePhyscia-type and secondary metabolites absent. Nine other species are reported from the region for the first time. These includeR. dolichospora,R. freyi,R. metaboliza,R. sicula,R. subminutaandR. willeyi. Of particular biogeographical interest are three additional new records that have western North American–eastern Asian distributions: the corticolous speciesR. endospora,R. macrosporaandR. megistospora. Five halacarid species are reported from the Brazilian coast for the first time. Scaptognathides delicatulus, formerly known only from its type locality in Kuwait; Scaptognathus gibbosus, known from Galapagos and Somalia; and Scaptognathus insularis known from northeastern Australia, have their distributions extended. Along with these new records, Halacaroides antoniazziae sp. nov. and Acarochelopodia caissara sp. nov. are described. Halacaroides antoniazziae sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the presence of three subgenital setae in males and none in females, 41–44 perigenital setae and two posterior external genital acetabula in males. Acarochelopodia caissara sp. nov. has a rounded anterior epimeral plate margin, the posterior epimeral plates are partially divided into two halves but anteriorly joined by a narrow band, the dorsal setae on tarsus I are grouped 1:2, and the anterior and posterior dorsal plates have a length: width ratio of 1.61–1.77 and 1.60–1.70, respectively.

We review Dineutus helleri Ochs, 1925, a whirligig beetle species endemic to New Guinea’s north coast mountains. Its diagnostic characters are illustrated for easy species identification. We provide a summary and geographic interpretation of historical records, provide new records and, for the first time, habitat photographs for the subspecies D. h. stueberi Ochs, 1955, which is endemic to the Cyclops Mountains area. We also discuss the subspecies classification of this species.

Teliospore germination is described for 28 additional species of smut fungi, most of which were recently collected in Mexico.Germination for most species is reported here for the first time. Included are some rarely collected species, some recently described by the author, and some previously unknown to exist in the New World. Where new records of exotic species for North America are indicated, germination was used to verify diagnoses, even though reported by previous workers in some instances. In demonstrating germination, family and generic affinities for most species were corroborated, although one required generic transfer.

During a 2019 survey of the Auchenorrhyncha fauna in Serbia, three alien species were recorded for the first time: a leafhopper species of Asian origin Orientus ishidae (Cicadellidae, Deltocephalinae) and two North American species, Acanalonia conica (Acanaloniidae) and Erasmoneura vulnerata (Cicadellidae, Typhlocybinae). Besides these first findings, the presence of the leafhopper Phlogotettix cyclops (Cicadellidae, Deltocephalinae) was confirmed in Serbia after its initial record more than a century ago. Other allochthonous species already known to be present in local entomofauna were also found: Japananus hyalinus (Cicadellidae, Deltocephalinae), Scaphoideus titanus (Cicadellidae, Typhlocybinae), Stictocephala bisonia (Membracidae) and Metcalfa pruinosa (Flatidae). The newly detected Auchenorrhyncha species in Serbia, O. ishidae, A. conica and E. vulnerata, as well as Ph. cyclops, are recognized as either tentative or true grapevine pests in Europe that cause physical damage or induce phytoplasma-borne diseases. Our findings reveal a potential phytosanitary risk that can emerge in Serbian vineyards in upcoming years and support refocused research of Auchenorrhyncha diversity in natural habitats, rather than in agroecosystems and their immediate surroundings.

The adaptation of the genus Chrysomyxa to a short growing season is discussed. Keys are given to the aecial and to the uredinial or telial stages of species that occur in North America. Range extensions are given, particularly for northern Canada. C. Rhododendri, newly reported in North America, and C. Cassandrae are shown to be barely distinguishable from C. Ledi and are made varieties of it. C. Woronini is reported for the first time in North America.

Scholars interested in the Christian Apocrypha (CA) typically appeal to CA collections when in need of primary sources. But many of these collections limit themselves to material believed to have been written within the first to fourth centuries CE. As a result a large amount of non-canonical Christian texts important for the study of ancient and medieval Christianity have been neglected. The More Christian Apocrypha Project will address this neglect by providing a collection of new editions (some for the first time) of these texts for English readers. The project is inspired by the More Old Testament Pseudepigrapha Project headed by Richard Bauckham and Jim Davila from the University of Edinburgh. Like the MOTP, the MCAP is envisioned as a supplement to an earlier collection of texts—in this case J. K. Elliott’s The Apocryphal New Testament (Oxford 1991), the most recent English-language CA collection (but now almost two decades old). The texts to be included are either absent in Elliott or require significant revision. Many of the texts have scarcely been examined in over a century and are in dire need of new examination. One of the goals of the project is to spotlight the abilities and achievements of English (i.e., British and North American) scholars of the CA, so that English readers have access to material that has achieved some exposure in French, German, and Italian collections.

There is extensive research of the Ephemeroptera communities taxonomy and ecology in the Andean region of Colombia. However, other regions such as the Orinoquia have been insufficiently studied. From this region, in the Meta department, four species have been registered: Varipes lasiobrachius Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Coryphorus aquilus Peters, Miroculis (Atroari) colombiensis Savage & Peters and Tricorythopsis rondoniensis (Dias, Cruz & Ferreira). The main objective of this study is to report for the first time for this region the species: Mayobaetis ellenae (Mayo), Hydrosmylodon primanus (Eaton), Haplohyphes baritu Domínguez, Camelobaetidus edmundsi Dominique, Mathuriau & Thomas and Nanomis galera Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty.

This paper discusses the preliminary results of the first comprehensive survey of the spiders of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR) in Singapore. Two plots were established in each of the three zones of vegetation, viz., primary forest, old secondary forest, and maturing secondary forest. They were repeatedly sampled over an 18-month period. Sorting of the collection so far suggests that the three vegetation zones harbour rather different spider assemblages. Only ~9% of the total spider fauna recovered was shared by all three zones. The results have also yielded a preliminary picture of dominance, abundance and rarity. Although first intended to obtain a baseline for future quantitative analyses, the survey became a testing ground to modify and refine methodology so as to conduct future quantitative surveys with greater scientific rigour. Taxonomic work on the samples so far shows that the spiders in the BTNR span over 43 families, of which six families are listed for the first time in Singapore. The tally is summarised in an interim checklist of BTNR spiders. The checklist, with a total of 317 entries, shows that there are 158 described species of spiders in BTNR, of which 25 species are new records for Singapore. Another 159 morphospecies are provisionally recognised as distinct species, some of which may be new to science. Our observations during the survey have allowed us to provide a narrative of BTNR spider diversity against a backdrop of their microhabitat specialisation.
