Relationship Between Thickness of Daily Growth Increments in Sagittae and Change in Body Weight of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) Fry

Sixty-four laboratory-reared sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) fry were marked to enable identification as individuals. Each was weighed initially on June 6 or 8, 1979; and again on July 6; and surviving fish were weighed a third time on July 20. After the final weighing, sagittae were removed and a standard otolith radius, corresponding to each weight, was determined by counting back from the otolith edge the appropriate number of daily increments. The regression of ln otolith radius on ln fish weight was linear, with r2 = 0.92, demonstrating a relationship between mean thickness of a daily increment in sagittae, and mean daily change in weight of the fry. Using this regression line, previous weights were back calculated from corresponding otolith radii with errors in the order of 15%.Key words: otoliths, daily growth increments, back calculation, sockeye salmon

Otolith – body length relations and back-calculation procedures were used to test the hypothesis that mortality of juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in Babine Lake, British Columbia, is size selective. Samples of the 1978 brood of sockeye were collected as fry from spawning tributaries as juveniles in the main basin, and as smolts at the outlet. Total otolith length was chosen as the most useful otolith dimension for back-calculation of fork length at emergence. Sockeye from the various tributaries show different fork length – otolith length relationships necessitating a weighting procedure for comparisons involving samples of mixed stocks from the lake. Instantaneous daily growth rate and In fork length during the early lake-rearing period were significantly correlated. Smaller juveniles grew more slowly than larger individuals in mid-july, and a hierarchy of sizes was maintained. The distributions of total otolith length at emergence for fry, surviving juveniles, and smolts indicate selective mortality of fish with smaller otoliths, hence of small size at emergence. Survivals from the lower and upper halves of the initial total otolith length distribution were 8.9 and 63.6%, respectively. Comparable estimates for back-calculated fork lengths at emergence were 27.2 and 43.4%. Size-selective mortality is most intense in the late summer and early autumn, and may be associated with predation and parasitism.

Three aspects of feeding relations in sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) were studied, using Abernathy pellets. When food was presented in excess at 15 C, mean satiation time was found to be 43 ± 8 min, independent of fish size. Voluntary food intake (appetite) increased with time, approaching a plateau after 25–30 hr deprivation. The greatest increase in appetite occurred between 7 and 11 hr of fasting. The relation between the capacity of the stomach (% body weight) and fish weight (grams) was exponential (Y = 14.1 − 4.95 log10X). Five-gram fish consumed 11% dry body weight at one feeding, and 17% on a daily basis.

Tetracycline injected into juvenile starry flounders (Platichthys stellatus) was incorporated into the periphery of the sagittal otoliths within 24 h. The resulting band, visible under ultraviolet light, was used as a dated mark on the otolith growth increments. This technique was used to verify that increments were laid down on a daily basis, both in field and laboratory environments. Subdaily increments were visible in otoliths of fishes reared under most environmental conditions. The production of daily increments in juvenile starry flounders preconditioned to a natural environmental regime was unaffected by photoperiod or temperature fluctuation, suggesting the presence of an internal circadian rhythm.Key words: starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus; otoliths, daily rings, growth increments, circadian, tetracycline

Age determination in merobenthic octopuses using stylet increment analysis: assessing future challenges using Macroctopus maorum as a model. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 2059–2063. Stylet increment analysis (SIA) is a method recently developed to age octopuses; it involves the enumeration of daily growth increments within stylets (an internal shell). To examine the potential of SIA in a merobenthic octopus species, SIA was applied to Macroctopus maorum collected from southeast Australia and New Zealand (n = 147). The stylets had clear concentric growth increments and a core-like region. However, low increment counts (≤224 d) produced non-feasibly high (≤21.7% body weight per day) instantaneous growth rates, based on the assumption that increment number relates to age (d). In the light of these results, the issues surrounding the application of SIA to merobenthic octopuses is discussed, particularly in relation to the lack of understanding in regard to stylet development in the early life history stages and the importance of validating age at first increment formation.

Sockeye salmon fry were collected from the Fulton River spawning channel at Babine Lake, British Columbia, in May 1978. The fish were reared for 26 d in enclosures in the spawning channel and were sampled every 7 to 10 d. The sagittae were removed from 25 fish from each sample, and the growth rings in one otolith from each fish were counted. A regression of the number of rings on the number of days since capture showed that these rings are, on average, formed daily, beginning at the time of emergence. Two groups of juvenile sockeye salmon are feeding in Lake Azabachye. They belong to the 2nd order stock of the lake (stock A) and to other 2nd order stocks of middle and down stream tributaries of the Kamchatka River which underyearlings migrate into the lake for feeding and wintering (group E). The main part of the stock A leaves the lake to the sea at the age 2+ (mainly 2.3) and the youngsters of the group E migrate to the sea at the age 1+ (mainly 1.3). The body length and weight parameters of the stock A smolts at the age 2+ and the group E smolts at the age 1+ could be similar or dissimilar in particular years. The maximal difference between the smots of these stocks is observed in the years with higher body length and weight for the stock A. Mean for 1979–2016 length and weight of smolts at abovementioned ages are evaluated as 98.42/87.46 mm and 10.40/7.38 g for the A/E stocks. For the stock A, statistically signifcant positive correlation is noted between size-weight parameters of smolts in the years of emigration and their abundance in the years of mass return. However, the regression has a shift between the periods of emigration/return of 1979–2000/1982–2003 and 2003–2013/2006–2016. The correlation is higher for the frst period (r = 0.820; P < 0.001 for body weight and r = 0.797; P < 0.001 for body length, n = 16) than for the second one with higher abundance (r = 0.669; P < 0.05 for body weight and r = 0.711; P < 0.05 for body length, n = 11). On opposite, the returns of the group E depend weakly on size-weight parameters of its smolts for the period of emigration/return of 1979–1997/1982–2000 (no data for return in 1999) and the dependence is insignifcant for the period of 2000–2013/2003–2016.

Tidal cycles are reflected in daily growth-increment sequences in shells of many Recent and fossil mollusks. Living specimens of the bivalve Mercenaria mercenaria were notched at the growing edge of the shell and planted intertidally in Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts. Shells from two lots, killed at intervals of 368 and 723 days after planting, show the same number of small growth increments as there were days from notching to killing. Superimposed on daily growth record are effects of winter (thin daily increments) and tides (14-day cycles of thick and thin daily increments). Comparison of Barnstable tide record with the first year's growth shows that, for each 14-day cycle, thin daily increments form during neap tides and thicker daily increments form during spring tides. Although tidal patterns are present in subtidal Mercenaria shells, they are rarely as pronounced as in intertidal ones. Spawning patterns differ from winter patterns; they are expressed in the shell by an interruption of regular deposition followed by a series of thin daily increments. Continuous sequences of bidaily patterns, one thick daily increment followed by a relatively thin one, are common in M. mercenaria.The clearest 14-day cycles of deposition were seen in shells of the bivalve Tridacna squamosa. Each daily neap-tide increment is a simple layer consisting of a dark and light zone. Each daily spring-tide increment is a complex layer consisting of two light-dark alternations separated by a depositional break that is more pronounced than the breaks delimiting daily intervals. Preliminary results of growth-increment counts in fossils show a generally decreasing trend of the mean values of days per lunar month toward the Recent. The Pennsylvanian value is 30.07 ± 0.08, a figure that is in general agreement with those of Scrutton (1964), who counted 30.59 days per month on Devonian corals, and Barker (1966), who reported more than 30 days per month in Pennsylvanian bivalves.

The results of studies on the optimal level of zinc, which are additionally introduced into feed for rabbits grown for meat, are presented. Experimental researches were conducted in the conditions of the problematic research laboratory of feed additives of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. A scientific and economic experiment was carried out on young rabbits of HYLA hybrids of the French company EUROLAP. The study was conducted by group method. In the 42-day age, 60 rabbits were selected, out of which, according to the analogues principle, three groups were formed – one control and two experimental, with 20 rabbits (10 females and 10 males) in each. The research lasted for 42 days. It was used full-grain granulated feed for feeding the experimental young rabbits, which according to the chemical composition differed in content of zinc in them. Rabbits of the control group received feed containing zinc 50 mg/kg, the second – 100 mg/kg, the third – 150 mg/kg. It was established that feeding of rabbits in the 43–84-day-old age with feed containing zinc 100 mg/kg contributes to an increase in body weight by 2.9%, and an increase in average daily growth during the growing season, respectively, by 4.7%. Feed costs per 1 kg growth in young rabbits consuming feed containing Zinc were 1.0% lower than the control group's young. Rabbits which were fed with feed containing zinc 150 mg/kg were inferior to body weight and average daily increments, respectively, by 1.4% and 2.7% of animals fed with a feed with a zinc level of 50 mg/kg.
