This supplement is based on presentations made at the “First International Congress on Nutrition and Athletic Performance” held at the Shaw Conference Centre, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, August 8-11, 2001. This conference was stimulated by an increasing awareness of the potential benefits and risks of diet modification and supplementation for elite athletic performance. This supplement summarizes recentfindings and commentary on new research directions in nutrition and athletic performance by 22 invited plenary speakers from around the world.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is novel paradigm considered for the future Internet, as well as for emerging architectures, such as the Internet of Things. Despite the significant research efforts that take place all around the world there are still many challenges and open issues related to the applicability of ICN. The papers of this special issue, six in total, identify such challenges, and propose solutions, design guidelines, and new research directions.



Departments of transportation all across the world are concerned with ever increasing number of Animal-Vehicle Collisions as they cause thousands of human and animal causalities along with billions of economic losses every year. This is one of the few areas of transportation that safety is not improving. As more roads are being built, the areas that animal inhabit is shrinking and thus causing more crashes between vehicles and animals. The human fatalities and injuries, animal fatalities and injuries, and material costs of these crashes emphasize the need for a solution to this problem. Through this paper, new research directions and combination of technologies which are suitable for covering the research gaps are presented

Becoming multicultural through early immersive culture mixing (EICM)—i.e., growing up with a mix of cultures that coexist and interact to form an emergent hybrid culture within one’s home—is a rapidly rising phenomenon in many parts of the world. This phenomenon calls for new research that recognizes the possibility of identification with a hybrid culture as well as the distinct cultures from which the hybrid culture derives. This article extends previous research into psychological variation among multiculturals based on the process of EICM, by investigating how EICM influences hybrid cultural identification and distinct cultural identification. In addition, we examine how EICM relates to the components of identity integration—blendedness and harmony. Across two studies of Chinese-Australian multiculturals, we found that whereas EICM was positively associated with multicultural participants’ identification with a hybrid culture and Australian culture, it was not related to their identification with Chinese culture. Findings also indicated that EICM positively predicted identity blendedness, but EICM did not show a clear link with identity harmony. We discuss the implications of our research for advancing EICM theory and helping to forge new research directions in cultural identification.

The small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial part in county’s economic growth and a key contributor in country’s GDP. In Pakistan SMEs hold about 90 percent of the total businesses. The performance of SMEs depends upon many factors. The main aim for the research is to examine the relationship between Innovation Capability, Absorptive Capacity and Performance of SMEs in Pakistan. This conceptual paper also extends to the vague revelation on Business Strategy in which act as a moderator between Innovation Capability, Absorptive Capacity and SMEs Performance. Conclusively, this study proposes a new research directions and hypotheses development to examine the relationship among the variables in Pakistan’s SMEs context.

Nowadays, the Industry 4.0 concept affects every area of the industrial, economic, social and personal sectors. The most significant changings are the automation and the digitalization. This is also true for the material handling processes, where the handling systems use more and more automated machines; planning, operation and optimization of different logistic processes are based on many digital data collected from the material flow process. However, new methods and devices require new solutions which define new research directions. In this paper we describe the state of the art of the material handling researches and draw the role of the UMi-TWINN partner institutes in these fields. As a result of this H2020 EU project, scientific excellence of the University of Miskolc can be increased and new research activities will be started.

Building on impressive new research into the concept of a ‘global middle ages’, this chapter offers insights into how economic formations developed around the world. Drawing on new research on both Chinese and Mediterranean economies in the ‘medieval’ period, it compares structures of economy and exchange in very different parts of the world. The point of such comparisons is not simply to find instances of global economic flows but to understand the logic of medieval economic activity and its intersections with power and culture; and, in so doing, to remind historians that economic structures, transnational connections, and the imbrications of economy and politics do not arrive only with modernity, nor is the shape of the ‘modern’ global economy the only pattern known to humankind.

Controlling the aggregation of vital bacterial proteins could be one of the new research directions and form the basis for the search and development of antibacterial drugs with targeted action. Such approach may be considered as an alternative one to antibiotics. Amyloidogenic regions can, like antibacterial peptides, interact with the “parent” protein, for example, ribosomal S1 protein (specific only for bacteria), and interfere with its functioning. The aim of the work was to search for peptides based on the ribosomal S1 protein from T. thermophilus, exhibiting both aggregation and antibacterial properties. The biological system of the response of Gram-negative bacteria T. thermophilus to the action of peptides was characterized. Among the seven studied peptides, designed based on the S1 protein sequence, the R23I (modified by the addition of HIV transcription factor fragment for bacterial cell penetration), R23T (modified), and V10I (unmodified) peptides have biological activity that inhibits the growth of T. thermophilus cells, that is, they have antimicrobial activity. But, only the R23I peptide had the most pronounced activity comparable with the commercial antibiotics. We have compared the proteome of peptide-treated and intact T. thermophilus cells. These important data indicate a decrease in the level of energy metabolism and anabolic processes, including the processes of biosynthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. Under the action of 20 and 50 μg/mL R23I, a decrease in the number of proteins in T. thermophilus cells was observed and S1 ribosomal protein was absent. The obtained results are important for understanding the mechanism of amyloidogenic peptides with antimicrobial activity and can be used to develop new and improved analogues.

Abstract Investment in family planning (FP) provides returns through a lifetime. Global evidence shows that FP is the second-best buy in terms of return on investment after liberalizing trade. In this study, we estimate the cumulative benefits of FP investments for India from 1991 to 2016 and project them up to 2061 with four scenarios of fertility levels. The findings suggest that India will have greater elasticity of FP investments to lifetime economic returns compared to the world average (cost–revenue ratio of 1:120). We have taken four scenarios for the goalpost, viz., 2.1, 1.8, 1.6, and 1.4. Although different scenarios of total fertility rate (TFR) levels at the goalpost (i.e., the year 2061) offer varied lifetime returns from FP, scenario TFR < 1.8 will be counterproductive and will reduce the potential benefits. With a comprehensive approach, if the country focuses more on improving the quality of FP services and on reducing the unmet need for FP to enhance reproductive health care and expand maximum opportunities for education and employment for both women and men, it can improve its potential to reap more benefits.
