The ice lensing phenomenon in layered soils, a condition that simulates the process of ice growth in varved soils, has been studied experimentally. Under the limited conditions of layer thicknesses, soils used, freezing rates, and moisture conditions, ice lenses formed at the face of the fine-textured (clay) layer when it was encountered by the freezing plane. Only minor heaving occurred in the coarse-textured (silt) layer when its thickness was increased. Key words: frost action, ice lensing, frost heaving, varved soils, layered soils.

Background: Pigmented tumour of the skin is one of the common tumour in human including the benign pigmented tumours (more common) called Nevi tumours and the malignant one called melanoma which was less frequent but the most poor in prognosis. In addition, the others not belonging to these group had the same clinical appearance, so the application of histopathology and immunohistochemistry for the definitive diagnosis was indespensible. Objectives: 1. To describe the macroscopic features of the pigmented tumoral-like lesions; 2. To classify the histopathologic types of the pigmented cell tumours and the other pigmented tumours of the skin. Materials and Method: Cross-sectional research on 55 patients diagnosed as pigmented tumoral lesions by clinician, then all definitively diagnosed by histopathology combining the immunohistochemistry in difficult cases. Results: There was no difference in gender, the disease was discovered most common in adult, especially with the age over 51 years old (58.1%). the most region located was in the face accounting for 60%, following the trunk and limbs (14.6%, 12.8% respectively). All 3 malignant melanomas happened in foot. The most common color of the lesions was black (65.4%), the other ones were rose, grey and blue. Histopathology and immunohisthochemistry showed that the true pigmented cell tumours were 52.6% encompassing benign ones (Nevi tumour) (41.8%), melanoma (5.4%) and lentigo (5.4%). 47.4% was not the true pigmented cell tumour including pigmented basocellular carcinoma (36.4%) and the others less common as histiofibromas, acanthoma and papilloma. Conclusion: the pigmented tumoral-like lesions of the skin could be the true pigmented cell tumours and the others, so the application of the histopathology and the immunohistochemistry after the clinical discovery helps to determine and classify the disease definitely and for the best orientation of treatment as well. Key words: skin tumour, benign pigmented tumour (Nevi), malignant pigmented tumour (melanoma), pigmented basocellular carcinoma

Abstract Cone penetration test (CPT) is regularly used during offshore site investigations to interpret soil stratification and soil characteristics due to its continuous penetration resistance profile. However, its use could be improved if better numerical methods to simulate its penetration could be developed. Finite element (FE) analysis, for instance, has the potential to provide insightful information on soil response and soil flow mechanisms. However, it is challenging to simulate CPT in layered soils, as the soil experiences extremely large strains around the cone and the simulation costs are high. In this study, the efficiency of using a partial large deformation FE (LDFE) approach was explored to examine the pre-embedment depth allowed for saving LDFE analysis cost. The LDFE analysis was conducted using the remeshing and interpolation technical with small strain (RITSS) method to model the large strain problem. Both soft-stiff-soft clays and clay-sand-clay soil were considered to study the thin stiff layer effect when it was sandwiched in soft clay. The LDFE/RITSS analysis compared a CPT penetrating from the soil surface with penetrations from a pre-embedded depth above the stiff layer. Pre-embedded small strain analysis was also conducted for comparison. The results show that the small strain analysis underestimated the resistance in both clay and sand. For the partial LDFE analysis with pre-embedment in the top clay layer, the CPT response in the middle stiff clay layer could be well captured regardless of the initial pre-embedment depth. However, for the middle medium dense sand layer (ID = 60%), the pre-embedment depth needs to have sufficient distance above it (10D, D is cone diameter) to capture the soil response in the sand layer correctly.

Although researches on richness, composition and conservation of Atlantic rainforest’s herpetofauna have focused on large and protected areas, small fragments subject to human interference are important to maintain α-diversity, as they often constitute the only relictual areas with favorable habitats for those species within the cities. In this paper, we report the richness and composition of snakes from a small urbanized area in the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), in the city of Salvador, state of Bahia, focusing on its conservation. We also propose hypotheses to explain the mechanisms that would facilitate the coexistence of these species, even in the face of an intense fragmentation process. The list of species here presented was based on the registers from the Museu de Zoologia of UFBA and the register book of the “Núcleo Regional de Ofiologia e Animais Peçonhentos da Bahia” (1987–2012). Based on the literature, each taxon was characterized with respect to habitat use, substrate, activity patterns and food habits. Nine species, belonging to the families Boidae (Boa constrictor) and Colubridae (Helicops leopardinus, Liophis almadensis, L. miliaris, L. taeniogaster, Oxyrhopus trigeminus, Philodryas olfersii, Sibynomorphus neuwiedi and Tantilla melanocephala), were registered. A comparative analysis of data from habitat and activity patterns of the species studied suggests that the coexistence of nine taxa in such fragment may be related to different combinations of substrate use and diet. Liophis almadensis (jararaquinha-false) and B. constrictor (python) showed higher relative abundance and were the only species recorded from 2010–2012, suggesting that part of the herpetofauna reported over the last 14 years may be locally extinct. This observation is even more critical because this period coincides with the suppression of almost all remaining fragments of Atlantic forest in the study area for university modernization and expansion.Additional key words: Bahia, conservation, local extinction, snakes, UFBA.

Abstract This article explores the surprising closeness and apparent warmth of the relations between biodiversity conservation organisations and corporations. It argues that in this paradoxical engagement, conservationists are exhibiting an extreme form of pragmatism - a willingness to 'sleep with the enemy.' The article considers the implications of these arrangements using the metaphor of a Faustian Bargain, a deal with the devil to acquire power in exchange for the soul. It considers the lure to conservationists of the logics underlying collaboration in the forms of market-based neoliberal conservation and the green economy in the light of the long-standing tradition of opposition in the face of the destructive engagement between capitalism and nature. It considers the benefits of conservation of its Faustian bargain, and explores its consequences. Key Words: biodiversity conservation, neoliberal conservation

In regions of seasonal frost the integrity of pavement structures is dependent on the resistance of base and subbase soils to frost action. This note describes the results of performing the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory CRREL II laboratory freezing test on a crushed limestone with a varying fines content. Frost heave increased linearly as fines content increased. Under the CRREL frost susceptibility criterion, the crushed gravel was satisfactory with up to 8% fines. A greater fines content resulted in an unsatisfactory classification. Key words: frost susceptibility, fines content, road base.

Abstract. Until now, the development process in most Third World countries including Indonesia still places women as second-class citizens; while leaving a latent environmental crisis problem. This paper examines the influence of development practices through the face of mining corporations, and examines the experiences of the struggles of the people who are in the circle of power relations. The global ecofeminism approach of Vandana Shiva and Maria Mies is used as a linguistic nomenclature that helps explain each of the key words in concepts that have previously been tendered by the patriarchal power system. In the end, the value of ecofeminism as the ethics of life becomes a solutive choice to restore traditional and relational awareness that transcends the binary barriers of the human genitals, and transcends the boundaries of human egoism towards non-humans.

Niqab, the practice of veiling the face, is adopted by a small percentage of Muslim women in Canada, yet it is the most controversial piece of clothing. Such a practice is stereotypically seen as ‘backwards’, unwarranted, and forced. Some will even go as far as declaring the religious practice as “un-Canadian”– demanding a public ban. But for Muslim women, the Niqab means so much more and it can be defined in many ways. This MRP is a narrative analysis of three Niqabi experiences of this Islamic practice. With Islam as the worldview or lens for this research, these three stories serve as ‘counter narratives’, showing Niqab as a symbol of resistance, power and choice. They also serve as education for those seeking to better support and understand Niqab. In the words of one scholar thinking about this moment during COVID-19, of veiling the face, it might be that “We are all Niqabis now.” Key Words: Niqab, face veil, face-veil, Burqa, Hijab, Muslim, Muslim women, Islam, resiliency, resilient, niqab ban, burqa ban, COVID-19, Coronavirus, pandemic, Islamophobia, 9/11

A metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi a hipotética dedutiva.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Ativismo Judicial; Democracia; Representação PolíticaABSTRACTThe objective of this work is to verify to what extent it is possible to conciliate judicial activism and democracy, considering mainly the challenges presented by contemporary social relations. The justification of this proposal is based on the fact that the Judiciary has been increasingly sought to deal with demands involving the inadequacies of governmental public policies in the face of fundamental rights. We point out as a problem of the approach to verify if it is possible to overcome possible tensions between the excess of judicial activism and democracy as a political representation also institutional of other powers, and as a hypothesis the premise that it should be adopted, for the solution of the problem, the oxygenated understanding of Democracy and its other legitimate protagonists, under penalty of emptying important instances of deliberation and daily political decision. The methodology used in this work was the hypothetical deductive. KEY-WORDS: Judicial Activism; Democracy; Political Representation

For anchors embedded in cohesive soil, the uplift capacity remains almost constant when the ratio of anchor embedment depth to anchor diameter (D/B) increases above about 4.5. The uplift capacity of anchors in cohesionless soil increases as D/B increases and the increase is greater with increased density of the cohesionless soil. Then, given that an anchor is embedded in cohesive soil, it may be possible to increase the uplift capacity of the anchor by placing a cohesionless overlay on the clay layer. The purpose of the model tests reported in this note was to investigate the effectiveness of placement of a cohesionless layer over a clay seabed in increasing the uplift capacity of a shallow anchor buried in the clay (D/B < 2.0). The sand overburden did increase the uplift capacity, but to obtain a substantial increase in capacity, a very large anchor displacement is required. In fact, the anchor had to displace through almost the entire clay layer before it mobilized the frictional resistance of the sand overlay. Key words: circular anchor, uplift, layered system.
