Particle induced x-ray emission has been used to determine the concentration of trace elements in ants (Formicidae). Scanning PIXE analysis was also used to determine the distribution of these elements. Samples of ants were collected from gardens, buildings or from the roadway in Japan, Finland and Sweden. The only pre-treatments were dusting and washing. In each run of experiments we used only one individual ant and have obtained the analytical results of a reasonable accuracy. We have detected chemical minor elements, i.e., Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, Br and Sr. The PIXE, and scanning PIXE method proved to be useful and sensitive enough to measure trace elements in such small insects as ants.

The use of particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis as a standard analytical tool in the study of trace elements is well known. In the present investigation, an attempt is made to correlate human diseases with the presence or absence of trace elements and/or the changes in their concentration in healthy and diseased tissues. If such correlations do actually exist, trace element analysis could certainly be used as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of diseases and there is considerable interest in such information.

Trace element concentrations in short necked clam Ruditapes philippinarum marked shells with iron rusting were determined by particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method. Element such as Ca, Mn, Fe, Zn, Sr, and Br were detected in the shells. The Fe/Ca X-ray intensity ratio decreased exponentially on the day after marking. It was concluded that the higher Fe concentration on marked clams was caused by attached iron rusting. The concentrations of Fe, Br, and Sr differed among the 3 stations (Kamaya, Shigaki, and Iwatani), suggesting that elemental concentrations may be related to the growth of clams.

Trace element investigation and its corresponding concentration level in selected tropical woods from western Nigeria was done using PIXE-particle induced X-ray emission methods. Fifteen selected tropical woods were analyzed and twenty-seventrace elements were identified and quantified. The identified trace elements are Na,Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Pb and Bi. Calcium concentration were2835, 3195, 4923, 5608, 7770, 5110, 2743, 5092 and 3451ppm in samples 2, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, respectively. Potassium recorded2838, 4811, 3184, and 2021ppm in samples 1, 3, 8 and 9, respectively. Silicon recorded5206ppm for sample 4 and 5253ppm for sample 7. Calcium and potassium were observed to have concentration level that is greater than 1000ppm in all the studied samples, hence it can be said that calcium and potassium are major trace element of wood. The concentrations of the elements identified have no immediate health concern on environment and human, therefore the studied tropical woodssafe for use as fuel and other purposes.

The present study was carried out with the aim to determine the level of 82Pb in the environment by analyzing the aerosol samples. In our experiment, the aerosol samples were collected from Chandigarh city which is also named as “The City Beautiful”. Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique developed at CCCM, Hyderabad has been used for the detection of trace elements in the aerosol samples

Trace element analysis via X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Proton-Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE) techniques were applied to several samples of fresh and processed foods. Thin samples of fresh fruits and vegetables, processed dry foods. and spices were included in these analyses. The results indicate that XRF and/or PIXE analysis is applicable to these types of samples but require special and simple modifications in sample preparation techniques, and the inclusion of new matrix type corrections for data analysis. However, the non-destructive nature, reproducibility, efficiency and high sensitivity that characterize these multi-element analytical procedures can provide new potential methods for detecting trace elements in foods and in many agricultural commodities. Toxic metals such as Hg, Pb. and As were detected in some foods. In addition, other essential or neutral trace elements such as Na, K, Mg, Ca, Cu, Cr, V, Zn, Mo, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se, Cl, S, and P were also detected. These and other elements can be analyzed rapidly and with high sensitivity for applications in process control and for certification of food quality. Developing these techniques and procedures specifically for food and for various agricultural products may provide new analytical options and help mitigate the expected impact of forthcoming regulations intended to establish limits and tolerance levels for micro toxicants and other essential nutrients in foods and agricultural products.

Abstract The trace element analysis system is presented using Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis at a new Ion Beam Centre in Trnava. Standard PIXE system dedicated to the measurement of thick solid samples was extended by a new application for trace element analysis in aerosol samples. The sample holder was modified with respect to the dimensions of the aerosol filters, and a new sample holder and a Faraday cup (FC) were made. The first results of the PIXE aerosol analysis are presented in this paper. Furthermore, the geometric efficiency of the detection system was verified using 55Fe radioactive source emitting monoenergetic Mn X-ray lines. The measured data were compared with the Monte Carlo simulations regarding/disregarding the X-ray attenuation.
