It is shown that if, from the starting point of a universal rank-one mass matrix long favored by phenomenologists, one adds the assumption that it rotates (changes its orientation in generation space) with changing scale, one can reproduce, in terms of only six real parameters, all the 16 mass ratios and mixing parameters of quarks and leptons. Of these 16 quantities so reproduced, 10 for which data exist for direct comparison (i.e. the CKM elements including the CP-violating phase, the angles θ12, θ13, θ23 in ν-oscillation, and the masses mc, mμ, me) agree well with experiment, mostly to within experimental errors; four others (ms, mu, md, mν2), the experimental values for which can only be inferred, agree reasonably well; while two others (mν1, δ CP for leptons), not yet measured experimentally, remain as predictions. In addition, one gets as bonuses, estimates for (i) the right-handed neutrino mass mνR and (ii) the strong CP angle θ inherent in QCD. One notes in particular that the output value for sin 2 2 θ13 from the fit agrees very well with recent experiments. By inputting the current experimental value with its error, one obtains further from the fit two new testable constraints: (i) that θ23 must depart from its "maximal" value: sin 2 2 θ23 ~ 0.935 ±0.021, (ii) that the CP-violating (Dirac) phase in the PMNS would be smaller than in the CKM matrix: of order only | sin δ CP | ≤ 0.31 if not vanishing altogether.

The framed standard model (FSM) suggested earlier, which incorporates the Higgs field and three fermion generations as part of the framed gauge theory (FGT) structure, is here developed further to show that it gives both quarks and leptons hierarchical masses and mixing matrices akin to what is experimentally observed. Among its many distinguishing features which lead to the above results are (i) the vacuum is degenerate under a global su(3) symmetry which plays the role of fermion generations, (ii) the fermion mass matrix is "universal," rank-one and rotates (changes its orientation in generation space) with changing scale μ, (iii) the metric in generation space is scale-dependent too, and in general nonflat, (iv) the theta-angle term in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) action of topological origin gets transformed into the CP-violating phase of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix for quarks, thus offering at the same time a solution to the strong CP problem.

In the light of several recent analyses pointing toward texture 4-zero Fritzsch-like quark mass matrices as the only viable structures for quark mass matrices, this work adopts a model independent approach to reconstruct an alternate and simplified structure of texture specific quark mass matrices in a generalized “[Formula: see text]-diagonal” basis within the Standard Model framework using the unitarity of CKM matrix and the observed hierarchies in quark mass spectra and mixing angles. It is observed that the measured [Formula: see text] values of the three physical parameters namely [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] naturally lead to the vanishing of (11) element in the down type quark mass matrix and that the single measurable CP violating phase [Formula: see text] in the CKM matrix is sufficient enough in [Formula: see text] to explain the observed mixing pattern in a suitable basis. The leading order as well as exact analytic phenomenological solutions are addressed for the modest pattern of quark mass matrices derived from CKM matrix and precision measurements of mixing parameters.

The idea of a rank-one rotating mass matrix (R2M2) is reviewed detailing how it leads to ready explanations both for the fermion mass hierarchy and for the distinctive mixing patterns between up and down fermion states, which can be and have been tested against experiment and shown to be fully consistent with existing data. Further, R2M2 is seen to offer, as by-products: (i) a new solution to the strong CP problem in QCD by linking the theta-angle there to the Kobayashi–Maskawa CP-violating phase in the CKM matrix, and (ii) some novel predictions of possible anomalies in Higgs decay observable in principle at the LHC. A special effort is made to answer some questions raised.

The experimental discovery of the Higgs particle in 2012 by the ATLAS Collaboration and the CMS Collaboration at CERN ushers in a new era of particle physics. On the basis of these data, scalar quarks and scalar leptons are added to each generation of quarks and leptons. The resulting augmented standard model has fermion–boson symmetry for each of three generations, but only one Higgs doublet giving masses to all the elementary particles. A specific special case, the simplest scenario, is studied in detail. In this case, there are twenty six quadratic divergences, and all these divergences are cancelled provided that one single relation between the masses is satisfied. This mass relation contains a great deal of information, and in particular determines the masses of all the right-handed scalar quarks and scalar leptons, while gives relations for the masses of the left-handed ones. An alternative procedure is also given with a different starting point and less reliance on the experimental data. The result is of course the same.

We present a detailed analysis and phenomenological consequences of neutrino mass matrix, [Formula: see text], with one-zero texture in the flavor basis where the active neutrino sector is extended by one sterile neutrino (3[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]1 case). In particular, our aim is to explore behavior of the sterile mixing parameters in detail when one of the elements of the neutrino mass matrix goes to zero. To study this, we consider two distinct mass spectrum of the active neutrinos: (i) completely hierarchical mass spectrum with a vanishing neutrino mass and (ii) completely quasidegenerate mass spectrum. In 3[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]1 scenario, the low energy neutrino mass matrix, [Formula: see text], is a [Formula: see text] matrix and has 10 independent elements. Thus it can have 10 possible one-zero textures. From the earlier studies it can be inferred that, if one assumes one vanishing neutrino mass, then only seven of these [Formula: see text] are phenomenologically allowed by the current neutrino oscillation data. On the other hand, if the neutrinos are quasidegenerate then there are eight phenomenologically viable one-zero textures. In this paper, we study the correlations between the sterile mixing parameters for each of these allowed textures for both mass spectrum and also their implications on the effective Majorana mass.

UNSTRUCTURED Over half of Americans report looking up health-related questions on the internet, including questions regarding their own ailments. The internet, in its vastness of information, provides a platform for patients to understand how to seek help and understand their condition. In most cases, this search for knowledge serves as a starting point to gather evidence that leads to a doctor’s appointment. However, in some cases, the person looking for information ends up tangled in an information web that perpetuates anxiety and further searches, without leading to a doctor’s appointment. The Internet can provide helpful and useful information; however, it can also be a tool for self-misdiagnosis. Said person craves the instant gratification the Internet provides when ‘googling’ – something one does not receive when having to wait for a doctor’s appointment or test results. Nevertheless, the Internet gives that instant response we demand in those moments of desperation. Cyberchondria, a term that has entered the medical lexicon in the 21st century after the advent of the internet, refers to the unfounded escalation of people’s concerns about their symptomatology based on search results and literature online. ‘Cyberchondriacs’ experience mistrust of medical experts, compulsion, reassurance seeking, and excessiveness. Their excessive online research about health can also be associated with unnecessary medical expenses, which primarily arise from anxiety, increased psychological distress, and worry. This vicious cycle of searching information and trying to explain current ailments derives into a quest for associating symptoms to diseases and further experiencing the other symptoms of said disease. This psychiatric disorder, known as somatization, was first introduced to the DSM-III in the 1980s. Somatization is a psycho-biological disorder where physical symptoms occur without any palpable organic cause. It is a disorder that has been renamed, discounted, and misdiagnosed from the beginning of the DSMs. Somatization triggers span many mental, emotional, and cultural aspects of human life. Our environment and social experiences can lay the blueprint for disorders to develop over time; an idea that is widely accepted for underlying psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. The research is going in the right direction by exploring brain regions but needs to be expanded on from a sociocultural perspective. In this work, we explore the relationship between somatization disorder and the condition known as cyberchondria. First, we provide a background on each of the disorders, including their history and psychological perspective. Second, we proceed to explain the relationship between the two disorders, followed by a discussion on how this relationship has been studied in the scientific literature. Thirdly, we explain the problem that the relationship between these two disorders creates in society. Lastly, we propose a set of intervention aids and helpful resource prototypes that aim at resolving the problem. The proposed solutions ranged from a site-specific clinic teaching about cyberchondria to a digital design-coded chrome extension available to the public.

According to David Miller, immigration is not a human right. Conversely, Kieran Oberman makes a case for immigration as a human right. We agree with the latter view, but we show that its starting point is mistaken. Indeed, both Miller and Oberman discuss the right to immigration within the liberal paradigm: it is a right or not depending on the correct balance between the interests of the citizens of a given national state and the interests of the immigrants. Instead, we claim that public justification can underpin immigration as a human right. That said, the public justification of the right to immigration has several counterarguments to rebut. Before we deal with that issue, relying on Jürgen Habermas’s social theory, we examine the legal structures that could support the right to immigration in practice. To be sure, this does not provide the normative justification needed, instead it shows the framework that allows the institutional realization of this right. Then, through a combination of civic and cosmopolitan forms of solidarity, the article discusses the formation of a public sphere, which could provide the justification of the right to immigration.

We examine the possibility that the masses of the W and Z gauge bosons are induced radiatively from the masses of heavy fermions. From experiment we know that [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]. We point out that this relation can be naturally obtained if the W and Z boson masses are radiatively generated from heavy fermions which arise from a mass matrix which has large electroweak violating masses as well as very large electroweak invariant masses. Two examples of this are considered: The usual see-saw neutrino model and the SU(5)c/quark-lepton symmetric models.

It is shown that in the scheme with a rotating fermion mass matrix (i.e. one with a scale-dependent orientation in generation space) suggested earlier for explaining fermion mixing and mass hierarchy, the theta angle term in the QCD action of topological origin can be eliminated by chiral transformations, while giving still nonzero masses to all quarks. Instead, the effects of such transformations get transmitted by the rotation to the CKM matrix as the KM phase giving, for θ of order unity, a Jarlskog invariant typically of order 10-5, as experimentally observed. Strong and weak CP violations appear then as just two facets of the same phenomenon.

AbstractIndustry-sponsored medical education is a much disputed issue. So far, there has been no regulatory framework which provides clear and definite rules as to whether and under what circumstances the sponsorship of medical education is acceptable. State regulation does not exist, or confines itself to a very general principle. Professional regulation, even though applied frequently, is rather vague and indefinite, raising the general question as to whether self-regulation is the right approach at all. Certainly, self-regulation by industry cannot and should not replace other regulatory approaches. Ultimately, advertising law in general and the European Directive 2001/83/EC specifically, might be a good starting point in providing legal certainty and ensuring the independence of medical education. Swiss advertising law illustrates how the principles of the European Directive could be implemented clearly and unambiguously.
