Selective separation and recovery of silver and copper from mixtures by photocatalysis

Separation and recovery of valuable metals including silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) from electronic waste mixtures are of great economic and environmental importance. Recent years, semiconductor photocatalysts have been investigated intensively for the removal of Ag from wastewater. Few studies have been carried out on the effect of pH and co-exist metal ions such as Cu on Ag. In this study, ZnO and TiO2 were applied as photocatalysts to target on the selective recovery Ag and Cu from its mixtures under UV light. The effects of pH, catalyst, ethylene-diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) on the Ag and Cu photo-reduction were studied. Modeling of Ag[Formula: see text] and Cu[Formula: see text] with and without EDTA distribution together with metal precipitations was plotted against pH to understand the chemistry involved in photocatalysis. Experimental results showed that Ag[Formula: see text] photo-reduction was nearly completed by ZnO and TiO2 to Ag metal, while Cu[Formula: see text] photo-reduction to Cu2O only occurs by ZnO in the presence of EDTA. This work illustrates that semiconductor photocatalysts are suitable for selective recovery of Ag and Cu from wastewaters.

Sorption and preconcentration of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+ on a salen-type Schiff base, 2,2'- [ethane-1,2-diylbis(nitrilomethylidyne)]bis(2-methylphenol), chemically immobilized on a highly crosslinked agarose support, were studied. Kinetic studies showed higher sorption rates of Cu2+ and Fe3+ in comparison with Zn2+. Half-times (t1/2) of 31, 106 and 58 s were obtained for sorption of Cu2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+ by the sorbent, respectively. Effects of pH, eluent concentration and volume, ionic strength, buffer concentration, sample volume and interferences on the recovery of the metal ions were investigated. A 5-ml portion of 0.4 M HCl solution was sufficient for quantitative elution of the metal ions from 0.5 ml of the sorbent packed in a 6.5 mm i.d. glass column. Quantitative recoveries were obtained in a pH range 5.5-6.5 for all the analytes. The volumes to be concentrated exceeding 500 ml, ionic strengths as high as 0.5 mol l-1, and acetate buffer concentrations up to 0.3 mol l-1 for Zn2+ and 0.4 mol l-1 for Cu2+ and Fe3+ did not have any significant effect on the recoveries. The system tolerated relatively high concentrations of diverse ions. Preconcentration factors up to 100 and detection limits of 0.31, 0.16 and 1.73 μg l-1 were obtained for Cu2+, Zn2+ and Fe3+, respectively, for their determination by a flame AAS instrument. The method was successfully applied to the metal ion determinations in several river water samples with good accuracy.

Effect of organic matter and organic acid on the heavy metals, especially, chromium (Cr) release in the sediment was researched. Glucose and soluble organic starch was used as organic matter, as well, citric acid and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) were simulated as organic acid. The results showed that best adsorption time of glucose on Cr was 5h, the optimal dosage was 0.1g g-1; best adsorption time of organic soluble starch was 4h, and the optimum adding amount of 0.08g/g; best adsorption time of citric acid was 5h, the best concentration 0.005mol g-1; optimal adsorption time of organic acid EDTA was 3h, the optimum adding amount of 0.12g g-1. Glucose, soluble starch and citric acid significantly effected on the release of Cr in the sediment, however, influence of EDTA on the release of Cr was not so evident.

TiO2 is a semiconductor material with high chemical stability and low toxicity. It is widely used in the fields of catalysis, sensing, hydrogen production, optics and optoelectronics. However, TiO2 photocatalyst is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light; this is why its photocatalytic activity and quantum efficiency are reduced. To enhance the photocatalytic efficiency in the visible light range as well as to increase the number of the active sites on the crystal surface or inhibit the recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs electrons, various metal ions were used to modify TiO2. This review paper comprehensively summarizes the latest progress on the modification of TiO2 photocatalyst by a variety of metal ions. Lastly, the future prospects of the modification of TiO2 as a photocatalyst are proposed.

Pemberian pakan yang berbeda dapat menyebabkan perbedaan kondisi fisiologis. Apabila tubuh ternak mengalami perubahan fisiologi, maka dapat berpengaruh pada gambaran darah. Pemeriksaan darah lengkap dilakukan untuk mengetahui status kesehatan hewan, terutama pemeriksaan leukosit yang digunakan untuk penunjang diagnosis terhadap suatu penyakit dan mengetahui adanya respons tubuh terhadap suatu penyakit infeksi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui profil leukosit kambing boerka yang diberi pakan hijauan lokal dan Indigofera serta probiotik Sampel yang digunakan adalah sampel darah dari 24 ekor kambing boerka betina. Perlakuan yang diberikan adalah pemberian pakan hijauan sebagai kontrol (P0), pakan hijauan yang diimbuhi Indigofera (P1) dan pakan hijauan yang diimbuhi Indigofera dan Bio-CAS (P2). Pengambilan darah dilakukan pada vena jugularis setelah diberi perlakuan pakan selama enam bulan. Darah dimasukkan ke dalam tabung yang berisi antikoagulan Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA). Pemeriksaan gambaran total dan diferensial sel darah putih secara otomatis menggunakan Hematology Analyzer. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pemberian pakan hijauan lokal yang disuplementasi Indigofera dan probiotik tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap nilai total leukosit dan diferensial leukosit kambing boerka. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian pakan hijauan lokal yang disuplementasi indigofera dan probiotik aman diberikan pada kambing boerka.
