In this paper, the scalar–tensor theory is applied to the study of perturbations in a multifluid universe, using the [Formula: see text] covariant approach. Both scalar and harmonic decompositions are instituted on the perturbation equations. In particular, as an application, we study perturbations on a background Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology consisting of both radiation and dust in the presence of a scalar field. We consider both radiation-dominated and dust-dominated epochs, respectively, and study the results. During the analysis, quasi-static approximation is instituted. It is observed that the fluctuations of the energy density decrease with increasing redshift, for different values of [Formula: see text] of a power-law [Formula: see text] model.

We consider generalized Brans–Dicke theory in which the coupling parameter is not constant but a function of the scalar field. Friedmann–Robertson–Walker models with bulk viscous fluid source described by full (i.e., nontruncated) causal nonequilibrium thermodynamics are analyzed. Exact solutions for the flat case have been obtained. Our results are compared with those in the usual Brans–Dicke theory with causal thermodynamics.

We consider the existence of a Noether symmetry in the scalar–tensor theory of gravity in flat Friedman–Robertson–Walker (FRW) cosmology. The forms of coupling function ω(ϕ) and generic potential V(ϕ) are obtained by requiring the existence of a Noether symmetry for such theory. We derive exact cosmological solutions of the field equations from a point-like Lagrangian.

We investigate the weak-field limit of scalar-tensor theory of gravity and show that results are directly depending on the coupling and self-interaction potential of the scalar field. In particular, corrections are derived for the Newtonian potential. We discuss astrophysical applications of the results, in particular the flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies.

The teleparallel alternative of general relativity which is based on torsion instead of curvature is considered as the gravitational sector to explore the dark universe. Inspired from the well-known Brans–Dicke gravity, here, we introduce a new proposal for the galactic dark energy effect. The new model includes a scalar field with self-interacting potential and a non-minimal coupling between the gravity and scalar field. Additionally, we analyze the idea via the Noether symmetry approach and thermodynamics.

The variational field equations of Brans–Dicke scalar-tensor theory of gravitation are given in a non-Riemannian setting in the language of exterior differential forms over four-dimensional spacetimes. A conformally rescaled Robinson–Trautman metric together with the Brans–Dicke scalar field are used to characterize algebraically special Robinson–Trautman spacetimes. All the relevant tensors are worked out in a complex null basis and given explicitly in an appendix for future reference. Some special families of solutions are also given and discussed.

We examine inflation in [Formula: see text] theory, where a scalar field is coupled to gravity. We have constructed [Formula: see text] models using exponential and power law potentials and study inflation for these models, which can support the early-time acceleration with a useful cosmological constant at high curvature. We have calculated the slow-roll parameters, scalar-to-tensor ratio, and spectral index for these models and analyzed them graphically to check the viability according to recent observational data. We have also presented the evolution of effective equation of state and energy density.

Six exact solutions are obtained in the general scalar-tensor theory of gravity related to spatially homogeneous wave-like models of the Universe. Wave-like spacetime models allow the existence of privileged coordinate systems where the eikonal equation and the Hamilton–Jacobi equation of test particles can be integrated by the method of complete separation of variables with the separation of isotropic (wave) variables on which the space metric depends (non-ignored variables). An explicit form of the scalar field and two functions of the scalar field that are part of the general scalar-tensor theory of gravity are found. The explicit form of the eikonal function and the action function for test particles in the considered models is given. The obtained solutions are of type III according to the Bianchi classification and type N according to the Petrov classification. Wave-like spatially homogeneous spacetime models can describe primordial gravitational waves of the Universe.
