Effective-range parameters and vertex constants for Λ-nuclear systems

For a wide range of the core-nuclei ([Formula: see text]), the scattering lengths, effective radii, and the other effective-range parameters (up to the order [Formula: see text]) for the angular momentum [Formula: see text] are calculated within a two-body [Formula: see text]-model. For the same hypernuclear systems, the [Formula: see text]-matrix residues as well as the corresponding Nuclear-Vertex and Asymptotic-Normalization constants (NVC’s and ANC’s) for the bound states are also found.

As any quick survey of the syntactic literature will show, there are almost as many different views of ergativity as there are so-called ergative languages (languages whose basic clause structure instantiates an ergative case-marking or agreement pattern). While ergativity is sometimes referred to as a typological characteristic of languages, research on the phenomenon has made it more and more clear that (a) languages do not fall clearly into one or the other of the ergative/absolutive vs. nominative/accusative categories and (b) ergative characteristics are not consistent from language to language. This volume contributes to both the theoretical and descriptive literature on ergativity and adds results from experimental investigations of ergativity. The chapters cover overview approaches within generative, typological, and functional paradigms, as well as approaches to the core morpho-syntactic building blocks of an ergative construction (absolutive case and licensing, and ergative case and licensing); common related constructions (anti-passive); common related properties (split-ergativity, syntactic vs. morphological ergativity, word order, the interaction of agreement patterns and ergativity); and extensions and permutations of ergativity (nominalizations, voice systems). While the editors all work within the generative framework and investigate the syntactic properties of ergativity through fieldwork, and many of the chapters represent similar research, there are also chapters representing different frameworks (functional, typological) and different approaches (experimental, diachronic). The theoretical chapters touch on many different languages representing a wide range of language families, and there are sixteen case studies that are more descriptive in nature, attesting to both the pervasiveness and diversity of ergative patterns.

A new one-dimensional high-order theory for orthotropic elastic sandwich beams is formulated. This new theory is an extension of the high-order sandwich panel theory (HSAPT) and includes the in-plane rigidity of the core. In this theory, in which the compressibility of the soft core in the transverse direction is also considered, the displacement field of the core has the same functional structure as in the high-order sandwich panel theory. Hence, the transverse displacement in the core is of second order in the transverse coordinate and the in-plane displacements are of third order in the transverse coordinate. The novelty of this theory is that it allows for three generalized coordinates in the core (the axial and transverse displacements at the centroid of the core and the rotation at the centroid of the core) instead of just one (midpoint transverse displacement) commonly adopted in other available theories. It is proven, by comparison to the elasticity solution, that this approach results in superior accuracy, especially for the cases of stiffer cores, for which cases the other available sandwich computational models cannot predict correctly the stress fields involved. Thus, this theory, referred to as the “extended high-order sandwich panel theory” (EHSAPT), can be used with any combinations of core and face sheets and not only the very “soft” cores that the other theories demand. The theory is derived so that all core/face sheet displacement continuity conditions are fulfilled. The governing equations as well as the boundary conditions are derived via a variational principle. The solution procedure is outlined and numerical results for the simply supported case of transverse distributed loading are produced for several typical sandwich configurations. These results are compared with the corresponding ones from the elasticity solution. Furthermore, the results using the classical sandwich model without shear, the first-order shear, and the earlier HSAPT are also presented for completeness. The comparison among these numerical results shows that the solution from the current theory is very close to that of the elasticity in terms of both the displacements and stress or strains, especially the shear stress distributions in the core for a wide range of cores. Finally, it should be noted that the theory is formulated for sandwich panels with a generally asymmetric geometric layout.

The concept of katechon (“that which withholds”), essential to both the theological tradition and modern political philosophy, originates in Second Thessalonians by Paul the Apostle. This withholding force which resists the coming of the end times has often been identified with the Roman Empire (and later with the Christian imperial state), the latter seen as a protected space that enabled the spread of the Good Tidings. This mission of containment, on the one hand, endowed the state with a sacred character, but on the other, it marked the state's finitude and imperfection. By withholding time, the katechon does not remove but preserves contradictions and heterogeneity, accepting its incompleteness as the burden of its own mission. In its secularized form, the restraining state conceives of society as an antagonistic space of struggle and conflict, and the function of political power is linked to the establishment of a temporal equilibrium with historically contingent and relative forms. In conservative thought, the katechon state guards society from unifying equality and rationalization, and individuals from the illusion of perfection and moral harmony. The understanding of the state as a force that rises above the disparate elements of society and preserves it against its inherent chaos was also at the core of the Marxist concept of the state. This article, based on a wide range of authors (T. Hobbes, K. Marx, K. Schmitt, K. Leontiev, D. Agamben) will consider conservative and leftist interpretations of the state, which accept and develop the idea of katechon and its interpretations not directly connected with the concept of state power.

This article addresses the complex issue of the collective identity of Christian communities in a time of individualisation and pluralisation. The emphasis in the 1980’ s was very much on organising, building and managing strategies; however, since then the religious ‘market’  has been offering a wide range of spiritual ‘products’  to serve every need. Yet the core question remains: what is it that unites members of a particular faith community and encourages commitment and involvement in church matters?  Two opposite examples illustrate recent practices. The Saddleback congregation, in Mission  Viejo California is an evangelistic orientated church that aims to involve members completely. The Church is a support-system, an answer to questions, a base for talents to flourish, a circle for friendship, sharing and caring. At the other extreme is the Remonstrante Broederskap in the Netherlands with a complete liberal approach, a very low degree of organisation, leaving members free to ‘shop’. The mediating mechanism that holds everything and everyone together is a common creed.  Within a highly secularised and individualised society a fear exisists that faith and religion might disintegrate.  Yet that does not seem to be the case. Communication of a particular identity, the ‘spiritual inside’  of a faith community raises the possibility of renewed crystallisation of many varied forms of belief and worship, thus saving communities of faith from complete evaporation.

Investigating dyon–dyon bound states in non-relativistic as well as in relativistic frameworks, it has been shown that in this system a dyon moves on a cone with its apex at the other dyon and axis along its angular momentum. Dyon–dyon bound states have been investigated in a non-relativistic framework to obtain energy eigenvalue and energy eigenfunction. It has also been shown that the exact solution of Dirac equation for this system is not possible due to the presence of a term vanishing more rapidly than r-1 in the potential of the system.

Ultrasonic thickness gauges are easy to operate and reliable, and can be used to measure a wide range of thicknesses and inspect all engineering materials. Supplementing the simple ultrasonic thickness gauges that present results in either a digital readout or as an A-scan with systems that enable correlating the measured values to their positions on the inspected surface to produce a two-dimensional (2D) thickness representation can extend their benefits and provide a cost-effective alternative to expensive advanced C-scan machines. In previous work, the authors introduced a system for the positioning and mapping of the values measured by the ultrasonic thickness gauges and flaw detectors (Tesfaye et al. 2019). The system is an alternative to the systems that use mechanical scanners, encoders, and sophisticated UT machines. It used a camera to record the probe’s movement and a projected laser grid obtained by a laser pattern generator to locate the probe on the inspected surface. In this paper, a novel system is proposed to be applied to flat surfaces, in addition to overcoming the other limitations posed due to the use of the laser projection. The proposed system uses two video cameras, one to monitor the probe’s movement on the inspected surface and the other to capture the corresponding digital readout of the thickness gauge. The acquired images of the probe’s position and thickness gauge readout are processed to plot the measured data in a 2D color-coded map. The system is meant to be simpler and more effective than the previous development.

On the other hand, the innovative character of his works is emphasized that allows to consider him a proponent of hetherodoxy. It is stressed that Schumpeter's revolutionary challenge can lead to radical changes in modern economics.

‘The Final “Thank You”’ uses the work of Jacques Derrida and Friedrich Nietzsche to think the occasion of the 1995 rugby World Cup, hosted by the newly democratic South Africa. This paper deploys Nietzsche's Zarathustra to critique how a figure such as Nelson Mandela is understood as a ‘Superman’ or an ‘Overhuman’ in the moment of political transition. The philosophical focus of the paper, however, turns on the ‘thank yous’ exchanged by the white South African rugby captain, François Pienaar, and the black president at the event of the Springbok victory. It is the value, and the proximity and negation, of the ‘thank yous’ – the relation of one to the other – that constitutes the core of the article. 1

This article examines how female conditioning and sexual repression affect the woman’s sense of self, womanhood, identity and her place in society. It argues that the woman’s body is at the core of the many sites of gender struggles/ politics. Accordingly, the woman’s body must be decolonised for her to attain true emancipation. On the one hand, this study identifies the grave consequences of sexual repression, how it robs women of their freedom to choose whom to love or marry, the freedom to seek legal redress against sexual abuse and terror, and how it hinders their quest for self-determination. On the other hand, it underscores the need to give women sexual freedom that must be respected and enforced by law for the overall good of society.
