An alkaline bath was developed for electroless deposition of Co – W – P thin films on a copper substrate. Effects of pH values, various concentrations of reducing agent, and different powers of ultrasonic on composition, microstructure, and magnetic properties of the films were investigated. It was found out that higher pH could improve cobalt atomic percentage and reduce amounts of phosphorus and tungsten in the film while larger amounts of NaH 2 PO 2 would decrease the cobalt content but increase the tungsten and phosphors content. The ultrasonic was introduced during the electroless deposition. Few effects of ultrasonic on the cobalt content were observed. X-ray diffraction showed that almost all of the deposited films were crystalline and contained hexagonal cobalt with a preferred crystallographic orientation (002). However, a typical amorphous Co – W – P film, which has smooth surface, and no crystallite with definite grains could be obtained when the concentration of NaH 2 PO 2 in the bath was over 1.2 mol/L. The films with rougher and agglomerate nodular structures would be formed in the bath with a higher pH value. Certain power (60 W, 40 kHz) of ultrasonic could smash the grains and led to the formation of a denser and smoother surface. Cracks appeared at the surface of the film when the ultrasonic power was 150 W. Vibration sample magnetometer results showed that the film with maximum magnetization (600 emu/g) and coercivity (1000 Oe) could be achieved when introducing ultrasonic (60 W, 40 kHz) during the deposition.

It is hardly possible to obtain rare earth doped CaWO4thin films directly through electrochemical techniques. A two-step method has been proposed to synthesize Tb3+-doped CaWO4thin films. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, spectrophotometer were used to characterize their phase, composition and luminescent properties. Results reveal that Tb3+-doped CaWO4films have a tetragonal phase. The ratio of n(Tb)/[n(Ca)+n(Tb)+n(Na)] decreases with the increase of pH value of TbCl3solutions. When the pH value (adjusted by NaOH) is higher than 5, Na element has been detected in CaWO4:Tb3+thin films. Based on the analysis on the composition and luminescence, it can be concluded that the pH value of TbCl3solutions must be no higher than 9.1, otherwise, no Tb3+-doped CaWO4thin films can be obtained. Under the excitation of 237 nm, sharp emission peaks at 543 and 489 nm have been observed for Tb3+-doped CaWO4:Tb3+thin films.

Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) is an important semiconductor material, which has wide applications in thermoelectricity, electronics, photoelectricity and infrared spectroscopy. Bi2S3 thin films have been deposited on ITO substrates through a cathodic electrodeposition approach at room temperature. The as-deposited thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence spectrum (PL). The effects of solution pH values on the structures and optical properties of the thin films were particularly investigated. Results show that uniform Bi2S3 thin films with oriented growth along (240) direction can be obtained at the solution pH value range from 4.5 to 6.5. The as-prepared thin films exhibit stable blue-green photoluminescence properties under the ultraviolet light excitation at room temperature. With the increase of the solution pH values, the crystallization of the Bi2S3 thin films improves while the grain size of the obtained thin films decreases and the light emission intensity of the thin films decreases.

Cr thin films are often used as underlayers for Co alloy magnetic thin films, such as Co1, CoNi2, and CoNiCr3, for high density longitudinal magnetic recording. It is belived that the role of the Cr underlayer is to control the growth and texture of the Co alloy magnetic thin films, and, then, to increase the in plane coercivity of the films. Although many epitaxial relationship between the Cr underlayer and the magnetic films, such as ﹛1010﹜Co/ {110﹜Cr4, ﹛2110﹜Co/ ﹛001﹜Cr5, ﹛0002﹜Co/﹛110﹜Cr6, have been suggested and appear to be related to the Cr thickness, the texture of the Cr underlayer itself is still not understood very well. In this study, the texture of a 2000 Å thick Cr underlayer on Nip/Al substrate for thin films of (Co75Ni25)1-xTix dc-sputtered with - 200 V substrate bias is investigated by electron microscopy.

The need for deinking mills to reduce their fresh water consumption has resulted in higher loads of various contaminants in the process water. Lower recovered paper quality also leads to higher contamination levels in the mills. This higher load has an influence on achievable target brightness. The objective of the work was to determine and explain the main reasons for relatively poor deinked pulp quality or poor deinking potential based on the influence of recovered paper composition and process water quality. The process water parameters significantly affect the deinking potential of recovered paper. The test results showed the negative effects of increased water hardness. For standard recovered paper mixtures, flotation selectivity is higher with increasing flotation pH-value. Good results were realized for standard recovered paper with low hardness, low surface tension, and high pH-value. The results for recovered paper containing flexo newsprint could be slightly improved with low hardness, low surface tension, and low pH-value. The results of the test program using design of experiments showed interacting effects of pH-value and surface tension on luminosity and flotation selectivity.
