Dynamic Response and Shear Demand of Reinforced Concrete Beams Subjected to Impact Loading

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams under the impact loading are typically prone to suffer shear failure in the local response phase. In order to enhance the understanding of the mechanical behavior of the RC beams, their dynamic response and shear demand are numerically investigated in this paper. A 3D finite-element model is developed and validated against the experimental data available in the literature. Taking advantage of the above calibrated numerical model, an intensive parametric study is performed to identify the effect of different factors including the impact velocity, impact mass and beam span-to-depth ratio on the impact response of the RC beams. It is found that, due to the inertial effect, a linear relationship exists between the maximum reverse support force and the peak impact force, while negative bending moments also appear in the shear span. In addition, the local response of the RC beams can be divided into a first impact stage and a separation stage. A shear plug is likely to be formed near the impact point at the first impact stage and a shear failure may be triggered near the support by large support forces. Based on the simulation results, simplified methods are proposed for predicting the shear demand for the two failure modes, whereas physical models are also established to illustrate the resistance mechanism of the RC beams at the peak impact force. By comparing with the results of the parametric study, it is concluded that the shear demand of the RC beams under the impact loading can be predicted by the proposed empirical formulas with reasonable accuracy.

In this paper, a novel and simple method for predicting the peak response of RC beams subjected to impact loading is proposed. The theoretical basis for calculating the peak impact force originates from the contact law, the principle of conservation of energy, the impulse-momentum theorem, and the wave theory. Additionally, the conventional beam theory, in conjunction with the well-known layered-section approach, is utilized to obtain the force-deflection relationship of the RC beam. Subsequently, by taking into account the strain rate effect, the maximum midspan deflection of RC beams under impact loading is determined based on the conservation of energy approach. A comparison with 143 impact tests has shown that the proposed method is able to estimate the maximum midspan deflection of RC beams under impact loading with high accuracy. The prediction of the peak impact force is shown to be slightly overestimated, which however can be used in the anti-impact design to preclude the shear failure near the impact point.

Cases of pipeline damage caused by landslide are common in coastal or mountainous regions, where the design of buried pipelines should be improved in order to reduce the risk of damage or failure. Dynamic responses of large diameter thin wall steel pipes under impact loading were analyzed using a nonlinear contact model of pipe-soil coupling in this paper. Several influence factors were studied, such as the impact velocity of rockfall, buried depth of pipeline, ratio of diameter to thickness and style of soil. The results show that an ellipsoid induces much more impact force than a sphere which has the same volume, and the larger one in volume have greater impact force for two spheres. Dangerous compressive areas of pipeline occupy 1/6 of the whole area, so the pipelines subject to landslide occur local failure. Based on results, some useful suggestions for the design of pipelines in landslide region are given

To investigate their in-plane dynamic response, a rigid plate with mass was given an initial velocity to impact (square) honeycombs in the X1 and X2 directions, respectively. Firstly, the impact model was built and validated. Then, impact resistance capacity research was conducted. Results showed that each honeycomb performed similarly in X1 and X2 directions, and the reentrant honeycomb usually used smaller displacement and time to absorb the same amount of kinetic energy. Thus, it is better for application if these factors were the main concerns. After that, the nominal stress at the proximal and distal ends were discussed under various impact velocities. It is shown that, under impact loading, the reentrant honeycomb generally showed higher initial peak stress as well as lower plateau stress at both proximal and distal ends. In addition, combining these with the deformation process of honeycombs, it was concluded that the formation of the plateau area of the nominal stress curve is related to the crushing displacement of the impact plate as well as the collapse of cells.

The dynamic response of different micro-beams after laser excitation experiments have been investigated in this paper. The impact force that induces the vibration of micro-beams is the interaction of focused pulse laser and tested beams. The impact response of micro-beams after being excited is measured by Laser Doppler Vibrometer. Different beams such as cantilever beam, L-shaped beam are employed in our experiments. Comparisons of the vibration velocity and its frequencies of different beams have also been performed. Experimental results show that the mechanical effects of laser shock do really exist and can be utilized.

It has been found that the impact performance of water jets can be changed by its properties, which include pressure, additive, and mode of jet. Thus, an abrasive water jet (AWJ) has been developed as a new method. However, there is little research on the effect of abrasive concentration on the impact performance of abrasive jets. Thus, the SPH method is used to establish an abrasive water jet crushing concrete model to study the effect of abrasive concentration on the impact force, concrete internal energy, abrasive particle distribution, crushing depth, and damage and crushing efficiencies under different concrete compressive strengths and abrasive densities. The results indicate that there is little effect of the abrasive concentration on the peak impact force under different compressive strengths and abrasive densities, while the mean impact force tends to increase linearly with the abrasive concentration. The internal energy of the concrete increases stepwise with the abrasive concentration under different compressive strengths and abrasive densities. The concentration of 10%∼20% is the rapid increasing stage. The crushing depth and damage efficiencies are all maximum at a concentration of 20% under different compressive strengths and abrasive densities. After the concrete was impacted by the water from the water jet, it is divided into rebounding particles and intrusive particles. The more the intrusive particles, the easier the concrete to be crushed and damaged.

Finite element model of both the single-layer Schwedler reticulated dome with the span of 50m and a Cuboid impactor were developed, incorporating ANSYS/LS-DYNA. PLASTIC_KINEMATIC (MAT_003) material model which takes stain rate into account was used to simulate steel under impact load. The automatic point to surface contact (NODES TO SURFACE) was applied between the dome and impact block. Three stages of time history curve of the impact force on the apex of the single-layer Scheduler reticulated dome including the impact stage, stable stalemate stage, the decaying stage were generalized according to its dynamic response. It must be pointed out that the peak of the impact force of the single-layer reticulated dome increase with the increase of the weight and the velocity of the impact block, but the change of the velocity of the impact block is more sensitive than the change of weight of the impact block for the effect of the peak of the impact force, and a platform value of the impact force of the single-layer reticulated dome change near a certain value, and the duration time of the impact gradually increase. Then four stages of time history curve of the impact displacement were proposed according to the dynamic response of impact on the apex of the single-layer reticulated dome based on numerical analysis. Four stages include in elastic deformation stage, plastic deformation stage, elastic rebound stage, free vibration stage in the position of the residual deformation.

The control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) is an important safety-related component in the nuclear power plant (NPP). When CRDM steps upward or downward, the pressure-containing housing of CRDM is shocked axially by an impact force from the engagement of the magnetic pole and the armature. To ensure the structural integrity of the primary coolant loop and the functionality of CRDM, dynamic response of CRDM under the impact force should be studied. In this manuscript, the commercial finite element software ANSYS is chosen to analyze the nonlinear impact problem. A nonlinear model is setup in ANSYS, including main CRDM parts such as the control rod, poles and armatures, as well as nonlinear gaps. The transient analysis method is adopted to calculate CRDM dynamic response when it steps upward. The impact loads and displacements at typical CRDM locations are successfully obtained, which are essential for design and stress analysis of CRDM.

The uniqueness of soccer is that the players are allowed to use their head to pass the ball to a teammate of even try to score goal. Studies have shown that heading in soccer might be dangerous to the brain and could lead to brain trauma. There are headgears available for soccer players to protect their head, but studies have proven that currently available headgears are ineffective in reducing the impact caused by a soccer ball. The objective of this study is to test the efficacy of six different types of impact-absorbing materials in reducing the linear impact force from a soccer ball. The soccer ball was dropped from the height of 2.3 m onto a force platform to measure the impact force. A high-speed camera is used to record the motion and the impact duration, and then the coefficient of restitution for each impact was determined. Polyurethane (PU) comb-gel was found to be the most effective material in reducing the peak impact force and impulse compared with other materials. The reduction in peak force was associated with longer impact duration between the soccer ball and the PU comb-gel. However, the coefficient of restitution was reduced by 21.7%, implying that using the gel alone will reduce the speed of the ball after heading, thus reducing the performance of a player wearing it. A combination of PU gel and another stiffer material is suggested and the effectiveness of the composite will be the subject of future investigation.

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams with light transverse reinforcement are vulnerable to shear failure during seismic response. In order to prevent brittle shear failures at beam plastic hinge regions of earthquake-resistant structures, the Turkish Earthquake Code and ACI318 require the use of sufficient transverse reinforcement to resist the total expected shear demand. These codes tend to be excessively conservative and, in some cases, the contribution of the concrete to the shear strength is neglected. The aim of this study is to investigate the contribution of concrete to shear strength of RC beams failing in shear experimentally. The beams were tested under monotonically increasing reversed cyclic loading to determine the concrete contribution to shear strength. It is observed that the concrete contribution to the shear strength at ultimate state ranges from 18% to 69% of the ultimate strength.
