Motivated by recent developments in bio-inspired medical engineering micro-scale pumps, in this paper, a three-dimensional sequential simulation of a peristaltic micro-pump is described to provide deeper insight into the hydromechanics of laminar, viscous flow in peristaltic propulsion. The Carreau and power-law models are employed for non-Newtonian behavior. The commercial software package ANSYS Fluent is utilized to conduct a numerical simulation of laminar peristaltic pump fluid dynamics, based on the finite volume method and steady space laminar solver. Details are provided for the geometric pump design (conducted with AUTOCAD), pre-processing (meshing) and necessary boundary conditions to simulate the peristaltic flow within the pump. Extensive visualization of velocity, pressure and vorticity contours is included. The present simulations provide a benchmark for future comparison with experimental studies and indeed more advanced numerical simulations with alternative non-Newtonian models. Applications of the study include biomimetic blood flow pumps, blood dialysis machines, micro-scale infusion pumps, etc.

Thermal accumulation in a car cabin under direct exposure to sunlight can be extremely critical due to the risk of heatstroke especially to children who are left unattended in the car. There are very limited studies in the literature to understand the thermal behaviour of a car that is parked in an open car park space and the findings are mostly inconsistent among researchers. In this paper, the studies of thermal accumulation in an enclosed vehicle by experimental and computational fluid dynamics simulation approaches were carried out. An effective and economical method to reduce the heat accumulation was proposed. Different test conditions such as fully enclosed, fully enclosed with sunshade on front windshield and different combinations of window gap sizes were experimented and presented. Eight points of measurement were recorded at different locations in the car cabin and the results were used as the boundary conditions for the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulation. The computational fluid dynamics software used was ANSYS FLUENT 16.0. The results showed that the application of sunshade helped to reduce thermal accumulation at car cabin by 11.5%. The optimum combination of windows gap size was found to be with 4-cm gap on all four windows which contributed to a 21.1% reduction in car cabin temperature. The results obtained from the simulations were comparable and in agreement with the experimental tests.

Thunderstorm microbursts, which are sources of extreme wind loadings in nature, have caused numerous structural failures, especially collapses of transmission tower around the world. Numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has recently made significant progress in simulating downbursts. In this paper, transient simulation of a three-dimensional moving downburst was studied using computational fluid dynamics simulation method. Transient simulation of a three-dimensional moving downburst was conducted using time-filtered Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) numerical simulation method. The three-dimensional transient wind field characteristics in a moving downburst were studied in detail. The results indicate that transient wind field characteristics in a moving downburst present quite different characteristics compared with stationary downburst at different heights and radial positions.

The recent developments in imaging techniques have created new opportunities to give an accurate description of the three-dimensional morphology of vessels. Such three-dimensional reconstruction of anatomical structures from medical images has achieved importance in several applications, such as the reconstruction of human bones, spine portions, and vascular districts.

Modelling of the hydrodynamics behaviour of the liquid on the corrugated sheets of packing is studied using three-dimensional, volume-of-fluid (VOF) model that is incorporated in Ansys Fluent 12.0. The flow of three different liquids with different physical properties is modelled. A domain of corrugated sheets of packing resembling the real structured packing with little modifications in the elementary geometry is constructed using ICEM CFD 12.0. The quantitative comparisons of the wetting behavior from the simulations are in good agreement with experiments. Further, the study has been extended to understand the influence of the second corrugated sheet on the flow behavior. The contours from the simulations indicate the liquid hold-up in the crimp of two corrugated sheets, and these results are in good agreement with the earlier experimental studies performed using X-ray tomography in the literature. The result from the simulation shows that even for the high flow rate of around 811 mL/min for silicon-oil (DC5), only 60% of the corrugated sheet has been wetted. Hence, the efficiency of the existing packing can be further increased by increasing the wetted area in the corrugated sheet of packing.

The paper presents some of the works related to the project of modern gyrocopter construction with the possibility of a short start, known as "jump-start". It also presents a methodology related to numerical calculations using Computational Fluid Dynamics based on ANSYS Fluent three-dimensional solver. The purpose of the work was to calculate the forces and aerodynamic moments acting on the gyrocopter stabilizers. The calculations were carried out for a range of angle of attack α from –20° to +25° and for a sideslip angle β from 0° to 20°. Based on the calculations carried out, analysis of the impact of the slip angle on the load on the stabilizers has been made.

The growing demand for energy efficiency gains in vehicles has led to several advances in more technological and efficient driving units, projects using lighter and more resistant materials and, in particular, a deeper study of aerodynamic studies in order to understand the fluid flow around the object of study. This work presents an aerodynamic study for a vehicle of high-energy efficiency, through computational fluid dynamics simulation in Ansys Fluent software. The main objective is to obtain the traction and drag force vectors acting on the vehicle at different speeds and to better understand the airflow before, during and after contact with the vehicle. With the possession of results, it was facilitated the implementation of improvements that enabled the vehicle to operate even more efficiently.

AimCardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure where interpersonal distance cannot be maintained. There are and will always be outbreaks of infection from airborne diseases. Our objective was to assess the potential risk of airborne virus transmission during CPR in open-air conditions.MethodsWe performed advanced high-fidelity three-dimensional modelling and simulations to predict airborne transmission during out-of-hospital hands-only CPR. The computational model considers complex fluid dynamics and heat transfer phenomena such as aerosol evaporation, breakup, coalescence, turbulence, and local interactions between the aerosol and the surrounding fluid. Furthermore, we incorporated the effects of the wind speed/direction, the air temperature and relative humidity on the transport of contaminated saliva particles emitted from a victim during a resuscitation process based on an Airborne Infection Risk (AIR) Index.ResultsThe results reveal low-risk conditions that include wind direction and high relative humidity and temperature. High-risk situations include wind directed to the rescuer, low humidity and temperature. Combinations of other conditions have an intermediate AIR Index and risk for the rescue team.ConclusionsThe fluid dynamics, simulation-based AIR Index provides a classification of the risk of contagion by victim’s aerosol in the case of hands-only CPR considering environmental factors such as wind speed and direction, relative humidity and temperature. Therefore, we recommend that rescuers perform a quick assessment of their airborne infectious risk before starting CPR in the open air and positioning themselves to avoid wind directed to their faces.

In Taiwan, arched groundsill is frequently used as soil-and-water conservation structures for stabilizing creek bed, guiding flow direction, decreasing the slope of creek bed and reducing the scour effect. Even though much more arched grounsill was built in wild creek recently, its mechanical mechanism is still unclear.

In order to explore the characteristics of arched groundsill, this study intends to find out the scale of stress, moment and displacement distribution on the various curvature arched groundsills by means of the structural analysis software, ABAQUS. Simultaneously, the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS-FLUENT, is applied to show the flow condition of different setups. Preliminary result shows that the maximum stress and displacement of arched groundsill increase with curvature. The maximum moment decreases slightly firstly and increases sharply later with curvature.
