Most of the studies in corporate governance in banks and other types of firms investigate board diversity and quality separately, without considering the possible relationship between these two. To fill this gap, this study investigates through a new methodological approach the level of quality and diversity of the boards of a sample of Italian banks using a proprietary hand-collected database; in addition, it examines the relationship between diversity and quality of boards to verify whether more diversity consistently relates to higher quality, in accordance with the regulatory approach. Evidence shows that especially small and mutual banks need to improve quality and diversity, as they probably suffer from their limited attractiveness to top profile directors. Moreover, on analyzing interrelations we find evidence of a positive association between board diversity and quality. In particular, financial skills and experience of directors improve the qualitative level of banking boards.

The relationship between Shari’ah supervision and Islamic banks’ (IBs) performance is still ambiguous particularly for banks across countries that have different regulatory environments. Pakistan adopts an interventionist regulatory approach which is exclusive to Shari’ah governance (SG) system in Pakistan. This approach differs from the other adopted approaches in countries that have either high or low degree of regulatory interference. Thus, this study examines how Shari’ah supervision mechanism, as represented by the Shari’ah supervisory board, and its characteristics, can influence the performance of IBs in Pakistan. The sample comprises 67 Islamic bank-year observations for the period from 2007 to 2015. The performance-governance relationship is estimated using a range of econometric techniques including the dynamic system-GMM estimator. The results reveal modest support for a positive association between Shari’ah supervision and performance. The study concludes that SG practices in the Pakistani IBs still suffer from some drawbacks which require more improvements by the respective regulators. Most of these drawbacks are related to the SG regulatory frameworks which are related to the SSBs’ roles and characteristics.

The relationship between class attendance and academic performance has been an important area of research, with a positive association being posited between the two. The setting for our study is an International Branch Campus (IBC) of a British university that needs to demonstrate the quality of its service delivery both to the parent institution and to the fee-paying students. We employ a dataset of over 900 students in an undergraduate degree programme and subject it to statistical techniques, namely quantile regression and two-stage quantile regression. Our results show that attendance has a beneficial influence on academic performance and this benefit persists at higher percentile of grades. We propose that IBCs could consider an attendance policy that encourages students to attend classes.

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects 240 million people globally. Few studies have examined the links between osteoarthritis and the Mediterranean diet (MD). The aim of this paper was to systematically review and analyze the epidemiological evidence in humans on the MD and its association with OA. A systematic search of EMBASE identified three studies that explored the association between MD and OA. Two of them were cross-sectional and the third one was a 16-week randomized clinical trial. Prisma declaration was followed to carry out this review. These studies described a positive association between a higher adherence to a MD and the quality of life of participants suffering OA. The prevalence of OA was lower in participants with a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet. Biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation related to OA were also analyzed and significant differences were detected only for IL1-α, which decreased in the MD group. Exploring the relationship between MD and OA is complex, moreover, the limited evidence and methodological differences in such studies makes it difficult to compare results. In conclusion, the three studies included in this systematic review demonstrated some relation between osteoarthritis and a Mediterranean diet. However, prospective and longer interventions are required to evaluate the long-term efficacy of the Mediterranean diet to improve symptomatology and preventing osteoarthritis.

In recent years, after the rapid and chaotic suburbanization in the 1990s, public spaces were gradually appearing in the new suburbs of postsocialist Poland. It is worth verifying to what extent these spaces are used on a daily basis. This paper aims to present a method of measuring the utility value of recreational public spaces and to determine the relationship between the utility value of space and its publicness. It suggests models of publicness of the most community-friendly recreational public spaces in Warsaw suburbs. As the research shows, intended diversity has the greatest influence on the prosocial character of space. Proximity, on the other hand, does not influence utility value so much. Location at some distance from the main nodes of activity and the highest concentration of houses, but with safe pedestrian access, is of more importance and should be promoted as a condition of successful suburban recreational space. The main conclusion from the research is that the most community-friendly recreational spaces do not have to be fully public. The measurement tools used in analyzing socio-spatial relations contributes to the development of the academic methods of studying the quality of public space.

This empirical research is aimed to explore the effect of Human Capital (HC) as a mediator in the association of the size of an audit firm and independent auditor’s opinion (IAO). The respondents of this research were senior practicing auditors of audit firms with verse experience. The research has applied ANCOVA and path analysis method in SEM by utilizing LISREL to examine research questions. The results of this study revealed that HC was significantly associated to independent auditor’s opinion and it can significantly create a relationship between audit firm size and IAO and their qualities. Indeed, the link of audit firm size on IAO without HC was found to be insignificant. Furthermore, it contributed to understand that the HC of large audit firm is greater than other audit firms and the audit reports of these kinds of firms possess good quality because of positive association amid firm size and quality of auditors.
