The impact of cerebral erythropoietin (Epo) in the regulation of the hypercapnic ventilatory response (HcVR) is controversial. While we reported that cerebral Epo does not affect the central chemosensitivity in C57Bl6 mice receiving an intracisternal injection of sEpoR (the endogenous antagonist of Epo), a recent study in transgenic mice with constitutive high levels of human Epo in brain and circulation (Tg6) and in brain only (Tg21), showed that Epo blunts the HcVR, maybe by interacting with central and peripheral chemoreceptors. High Epo serum levels in Tg6 mice lead to excessive erythrocytosis (hematocrit ~80–90%), the main symptom of chronic mountain sickness (CMS). These latter results support the hypothesis that reduced central chemosensitivity accounts for the hypoventilation observed in CMS patients. To solve this intriguing divergence, we reevaluate HcVR in Tg6 and Tg21 mouse lines, by assessing the metabolic rate [O consumption (V̇) and CO production (V̇)], a key factor modulating ventilation, the effect of which was not considered in the previous study. Our results showed that the decreased HcVR observed in Tg6 mice (~70% reduction; < 0.01) was due to a significant decrease in the metabolism (~40%; < 0.0001) rather than Epo’s effect on CO chemosensitivity. Additional analysis in Tg21 mice did not reveal differences of HcVR or metabolism. We concluded that cerebral Epo does not modulate the central chemosensitivity system, and that a metabolic effect upon CO inhalation is responsible for decreased HcVR observed in Tg6 animals. As CMS patients also show decreased HcVR, our findings might help to better understand respiratory disorders at high altitude.

AbstractTo use isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) technology to study the pathogenesis of chronic mountain sickness (CMS), identify biomarkers for CMS, and investigate the effect of total flavones of Dracocephalum moldavica L. (TFDM) on a rat model of CMS. We simulated high altitude hypobaric hypoxia conditions and generated a rat model of CMS. Following the administration of TFDM, we measured the pulmonary artery pressure and serum levels of hemoglobin (Hb), the hematocrit (Hct), and observed the structure of the pulmonary artery in experimental rats. Furthermore, we applied iTRAQ-labeled quantitative proteomics technology to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the serum, performed bioinformatics analysis, and verified the DEPs by immunohistochemistry. Analysis showed that the pulmonary artery pressure, serum levels of Hb, and the Hct, were significantly increased in a rat model of CMS (P < 0.05). Pathological analysis of lung tissue and pulmonary artery tissue showed that the alveolar compartment had obvious hyperplasia and the pulmonary artery degree of muscularization was enhanced. Both pulmonary artery pressure and tissue morphology were improved following the administration of TFDM. We identified 532 DEPs by quantitative proteomics; gene ontology (GO)and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis further revealed that metabolic pathways associated with coagulation and complement play crucial roles in the occurrence of CMS. Immunohistochemistry verified that several DEPs (α-1-acid glycoprotein, collagen, fibulin, haptoglobin, PLTP, and TAGLN2) are important biological markers for CMS. Our analyses demonstrated that TFDM can improve CMS and exert action by influencing the metabolic pathways associated with coagulation and complement. This process relieves pulmonary artery pressure and improves lung function. We also identified that α-1-acid glycoprotein, collagen, fibulin, haptoglobin, PLTP, and TAGLN2 may represent potential biomarkers for CMS.

Adaptation or natural acclimatization results from the interaction between genetic variations and acclimatization resulting in individuals with ability to live and reproduce without problems at high altitudes. Testosterone is a hormone that increases erythropoiesis and inhibits ventilation. It could therefore, be associated to the adaptation to high altitudes. Excessive erythrocytosis, which in turn will develop chronic mountain sickness is caused by low arterial oxygen saturation and ventilatory inefficiency and blunted ventilatory response to hypoxia. Testosterone is elevated in natives at high altitude with excessive erythrocytosis (>21 g /dl hemoglobin in men and >19 g/dl in women). Natives from the Peruvian central Andes with chronic mountain sickness express gene SENP1 that enhances the activity of the androgen receptor. Results of the current investigations suggest that increase in serum testosterone and hemoglobin is not adequate for adaptation to high altitude.

Peripheral chemoreflex function was studied in high-altitude (HA) natives at HA, in patients with chronic mountain sickness (CMS) at HA, and in sea-level (SL) natives at SL. Results were as follows. 1) Acute ventilatory responses to hypoxia (AHVR) in the HA and CMS groups were approximately one-third of those of the SL group. 2) In CMS patients, some indexes of AHVR were modestly, but significantly, lower than in healthy HA natives. 3) Prior oxygenation increased AHVR in all subject groups. 4) Neither low-dose dopamine nor somatostatin suppressed any component of ventilation that could not be suppressed by acute hyperoxia. 5) In all subject groups, the ventilatory response to hyperoxia was biphasic. Initially, ventilation fell but subsequently rose so that, by 20 min, ventilation was higher in hyperoxia than hypoxia for both HA and CMS subjects. 6) Peripheral chemoreflex stimulation of ventilation was modestly greater in HA and CMS subjects at an end-tidal Po 2= 52.5 Torr than in SL natives at an end-tidal Po 2 = 100 Torr. 7) For the HA and CMS subjects combined, there was a strong correlation between end-tidal Pco 2 and hematocrit, which persisted after controlling for AHVR.

The analysis of competition policy under economic crisis is motivated by the fact that competition is a key factor for the level of productivity. The latter, in its turn, influences the scope and length of economic recession. In many Russian markets buyers' gains decline because of the weakness of competition, since suppliers are reluctant to cut prices in spite of the decreasing demand. Data on prices in Russia and abroad in the second half of 2008 show asymmetric price rigidity. At least two questions are important under economic crisis: the 'division of labor' between pro-active and protective tools of competition policy and the impact of anti-crisis policy on competition. Protective competition policy is insufficient in transition economy, especially in the days of crisis it should be supplemented with the well-designed industrial policy measures which do not contradict the goals of competition. The preferable tools of anti-crisis policy are also those that do not restrain competition.

The results of our studies and the data of modern literature regarding the biological role of Cr(III) compounds in conditions of their application in the nutrition for pigs and cattle are discussed. The metabolic impact of Cr(III), coming from different sources – mineral and organic compounds, obtained by chemical synthesis or a nanotechnological method (chromium citrate), as well as in the form of biocomplexes from the cultural medium of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts was analyzed. The metabolic connection between the impact of Cr(III) and the biosynthesis of some hormones – insulin, cortisol – as well as the sensitivity of some tissues and organs to the effect of chromium compounds was studied. A considerable part of the review material was dedicated to the metabolic effect of Cr(III) compounds on the reproductive function of pigs and cattle and their impact on the viability of the offspring and gametes of animals. The data about the stimulating effect of Cr(III) on the growth and development of the organism of piglets and calves, meat and milk performance of these species of animals are discussed. The relevance of dosing Cr(III) in the nutrition of pigs and cattle is highlighted.

The use of Customer Relationship Managers to foster customers loyalty has become one of the most common business strategies in the past years.  However, CRM solutions do not fill the abundance of happily ever-after relationships that business needs, and each client’s perception is different in the buying process.  Therefore, the experience must be precise, in order to extend the loyalty period of a customer as much as possible. One of the economic sectors in which CRM’s have improved this experience is retailing, where the personalized attention to the customer is a key factor.  However, brick and mortar experiences are not enough to be aware in how environmental changes could affect the industry trends in the long term.  A base unified theoretical framework must be taken into consideration, in order to develop an adaptable model for constructing or implementing CRMs into companies. Thanks to this approximation, the information is complemented, and the outcome will increment the quality in any Marketing/Sales initiative. The goal of this article is to explore the different factors grouped by three main domains within the impact of service quality, from a consumer’s perspective, in both on-line and off-line retailing sector.  Secondly, we plan to go a step further and extract base guidelines about previous analysis for designing CRM’s solutions focused on the loyalty of the customers for a specific retailing sector and its product: Sports Running Shoes.

BACKGROUND The impact and quality of a faculty members publications is a key factor in promotion and tenure decisions and career advancement. Traditional measures, including citation counts and journal impact factor, have notable limitations. Since 2010, alternative metrics have been proposed as another means of assessing the impact and quality of scholarly work. The Altmetric Attention Score is an objective score frequently used to determine the immediate reach of a published work across the web, including news outlets, blogs, social media, and more. Several studies evaluating the correlation between the Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations have found mixed results and may be discipline-specific. OBJECTIVE To determine the correlation between higher Altmetric Attention Scores and citation count for journal articles published in major pharmacy journals. METHODS This cross-sectional study evaluated articles from major pharmacy journals ranked in the top 10% according to the Altmetric Attention Score. Sources of attention that determined the Altmetric Attention Score were obtained, as well each articles open access status, article type, study design, and topic. Correlation between journal characteristics, including the Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations, was assessed using the Spearman’s correlation test. A Kruskal-Wallis 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the Altmetric Attention Scores between journals. RESULTS Six major pharmacy journals were identified. A total of 1,376 articles were published in 2017 and 137 of these represented the top 10% with the highest Altmetric Attention Scores. The median Altmetric Attention Score was 19 (IQR 15-28). Twitter and Mendeley were the most common sources of attention. Over half (56.2%) of the articles were original investigations and 49.8% were either cross-sectional, qualitative, or cohort studies. No significant correlation was found between the Altmetric Attention Score and citation count (rs=0.07, P = 0.485). Mendeley was the only attention source that correlated with the number of citations (rs=0.486, P<0.001). The median Altmetric Attention Score varied widely between each journal (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The overall median Altmetric Attention score of 19 suggests articles published in major pharmacy journals are near the top 5% of all scientific output. However, we found no correlation between the Altmetric Attention Score and number of citations for articles published in major pharmacy journals in the year 2017.

AbstractTrying to manage the dramatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection spread, many countries imposed national lockdown, radically changing the routinely life of humans worldwide. We hypothesized that both the pandemic per se and the consequent socio-psychological sequelae could constitute stressors for Italian population, potentially affecting the endocrine system. This study was designed to describe the effect of lockdown-related stress on the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in a cohort of young men. A prospective, observational clinical trial was carried out, including patients attending the male infertility outpatient clinic before and after the national lockdown for COVID-19 pandemic. The study provided a baseline visit performed before and a follow-up visit after the lockdown in 2020. During the follow-up visit, hormonal measurements, lifestyle habits and work management were recorded. Thirty-one male subjects were enrolled (mean age: 31.6 ± 6.0 years). TSH significantly decreased after lockdown (p = 0.015), whereas no significant changes were observed in the testosterone, luteinising hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, estradiol and prolactin serum levels. No patient showed TSH serum levels above or below reference ranges, neither before nor after lockdown. Interestingly, TSH variation after lockdown was dependent on the working habit change during lockdown (p = 0.042). We described for the first time a TSH reduction after a stressful event in a prospective way, evaluating the HPT axis in the same population, before and after the national lockdown. This result reinforces the possible interconnection between psychological consequences of a stressful event and the endocrine regulation.
