In cats under chloralose anesthesia, the mean diffusing capacity for O2 (Do2) was 0.91 (S.D. ± 0.29). The mean Do2/m2 body surface was 3.26 (S.D. ± 1.30). Under the experimental conditions described, the Do2 was linearly related to the O2 consumption/body weight or surface area of the animal. The Do2 was reduced by bronchial occlusion in approximate proportion to the blocked area. Cooling the animal also reduced the Do2. Epinephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine given by constant intravenous infusion had slight effects on the Do2. Dissociation curves for cats' blood are reported. Submitted on December 5, 1958

1. A method is described by means of which the surface area of puparia of Drosophila melanogaster may be measured. 2. Measurement of almost 200 puparia showed that the relationship between surface area, per mg., and body weight could best be expressed in the form of the equation S=7.7049-2.1099X, where S=surface area, sq. mm. per mg. wet weight, for prepupae of mean wet weight X mg. As the standard error of estimate, ±0.117, is equal to only 2.2% of the mean surface area per mg., the surface area can be accurately estimated from the wet weight. 3. The prepupal oxygen consumption, per mg. wet weight, is shown to decrease steadily with increasing body weight; with an increase in mean wet weight from 0.847 to 1.700 mg., the oxygen consumption, per mg., decreases by about 50%. 4. Utilizing the above regression equation, the surface area of prepupae of known oxygen consumption was estimated and thus the oxygen consumption per sq. mm. of body surface. These values show no significant variation with increasing body weight, so that it can be concluded that the oxygen consumption of prepupae of D. melanogaster is proportional to the surface area.

There is increase in the daily urinary excretion of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid (VMA) with age. The mean output in micrograms per 24 hours for various age groups is as follows: birth to 1 year-DA 60.9 (± 24.3), NE 10.6 (± 3.4), E 1.3 (± 1.2), VMA 569 (± 309); 1 through 5 years—DA 124.1 (± 40.7), NE (18.8 ± 7.0), E 3.2 (± 2.7), VMA 1348 (± 433); 6 through 15 years—DA 169.3 (± 72.6), NE 37.4 (± 16.6), E 4.8 (± 2.4), VMA 2373 (± 698); over 15 years—DA 249.1 (± 74.9), NE 50.7 (± 15.7), E 7.1 (± 3.3), VMA 3192 (± 699). The studies suggest that the daily output of these compounds in the various age groups is similar when related to body surface area after infancy.

Abstract BACKGROUNDThe liver volume and spleen volum are useful index for cirrhosis patients with esphageal varices. But the calculation of the volume is time-consuming and boring. To solve the problem, we successfully established the liver and spleen volume formula using the body surface area. We compared the liver volume formula with other four formulas, which be proved with highest accuracy and lowest error. Until now, except for the new spleen volume formula in the research, there are few reports about it.AIMTo obtain a reference range of morphological indices, and to establish a formula to accurately predict the standard liver and spleen volumes in Chinese adults.METHODSComputed tomography was used to calculate the estimated total liver volume and spleen volume of 305 Chinese adults without any diseases which could influence the volumes of these two organs. Gender, age, body height, body weight, body surface area and body mass index were determined. Correlation analysis and step-wise multiple linear regression analysis were performed to evaluate the impact of each parameter on the liver and spleen volumes, and then a formula to predict the liver and spleen volumes was established. Finally, the results obtained with the new liver volume formula with existing formulas in a validation group were compared.RESULTSThe average liver and spleen volume values were 1043.18 ± 244.60 cm3 and 175.07 ± 88.15 cm3, respectively. Age, body height, body weight, body surface area and body mass index were significantly correlated with liver and spleen volume. Body surface area showed the strongest correlation with liver volume and spleen volume( p<0.005 and p<0.001). Based on these results, new formulas to calculate the standard liver volume and standard spleen volume were established.CONCLUSIONSCompared the new liver volume formula with the existing formula, it is found that the new liver volume is more accurate. And the accuracy of the spleen volume formula is acceptable. Core tip: To solve the problem of time-consuming and boring in calculating the liver and spleen volume, we successfully established the liver and spleen volume formula can be used in Chinese adult. Though there are some reports about the liver volume, but it is different in spleen volume. The liver volume and spleen volume radio is an useful index to predict the esophageal varices and bleeding risk for cirrhosis patients. Only liver volume formula is not enough, the finding of the spleen volume is very meaningful.

Methods and Patients We evaluated gastric emptying time (GET) with a technetium (Tc) 99m-sulfur colloid gastric emptying scan in 11 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPO) (6 males, 5 females) and in 14 controls. We investigated the effect of dialysate dwell on GET by studying the subjects twice: once without dialysate in the abdomen (drained) and once with 2 L of dialysate in the abdomen (full). We also investigated the relationship between body surface area (BSA) and delayed gastric emptying. Results (1) The mean gastric emptying rate in 120 minutes in patients on CAPO when drained (67.8% ± 13.4%) was not different from that in controls (65.4% ± 8.6%). (2) The mean gastric emptying rate in 120 minutes in patients on CAPO when full was significantly slower than that when drained (55.6% ± 14.6% versus 67.8% ± 13.4%, p < 0.05). In four of the 11 patients (36.4%), gastric emptying was extremely delayed from normal to abnormal range when full. (3) The BSA of patients who had extremely delayed GET from normal to abnormal range was smaller than that of patients who had minimal delayed or unchanged GET when full (1.5 ± 0.11 m2 versus 1.74 ± 0.22 m2). Conclusion This study showed that patients on CAPO had normal gastric emptying when drained, and that gastric emptying was delayed by dialysate dwell, especially in patients who has less than 1.5 m2 of body surface area. Therefore, we suggest that, based on adequacy, intermittent nocturnal peritoneal dialysis or a small volume of dialysate be considered for patients with small body surface area.

Minute amounts of uniformly labeled C14 glucose were administered intravenously to unanesthetized normal and hypophysectomized dogs, in the postabsorptive state, as an initial priming injection, followed by a constant infusion. From the observed specific activity of the plasma glucose during the 60–180-minute period of the constant infusion, the following parameters of carbohydrate metabolism were determined: a) the size of the glucose pool, b) the glucose space and c) the rate of turnover of the glucose pool. The rate of total CO2 production was also determined. The rate of total CO2 production, per square meter of body surface area, was found to be less in the hypophysectomized dog than in the normal one. The glucose pool, per kilogram body weight, was found to be smaller in the hypophysectomized dog than in the normal one. The glucose space, expressed as percentage of body weight, was found to be similar in the two types of animals. The rate of turnover of the glucose pool in the hypophysectomized dog, presented as grams glucose per square meter of body surface area per hour, was found to be less in the hypophysectomized dog than in the normal one. The low rate of glucose uptake by the tissues which was observed to prevail in the hypophysectomized dog is believed to reflect an adjustment in the secretion of insulin to conform to the limited availability of endogenous glucose which results from the removal of the pituitary gland.

9621 Background: Bone pain is the most commonly reported treatment-related adverse event (AE) associated with colony-stimulating growth factors. Some authors have suggested that pegfilgrastim-induced bone pain is unpredictable and refractory to analgesics (Kirshner 2007), though that impression may not be uniformly accepted. To better characterize this adverse event we evaluated bone pain across pegfilgrastim clinical trials. Methods: Completed Amgen-sponsored trials that both incorporated pegfilgrastim 6mg administered 24 hours after chemotherapy and utilized MedDRA library coding of AEs were examined. Included were 2 studies comparing pegfilgrastim with placebo (Vogel 2005, Hecht 2007) and 2 studies comparing pegfilgrastim with filgrastim (Sierra 2008, Lopez 2004). The incidence of bone pain was determined by treatment (pegfilgrastim, filgrastim, or placebo), chemotherapy (taxane-containing or not), cycle, severity, age, and body surface area (BSA). Analysis and recoding of studies with preferred AEs coded to nonMedDRA dictionaries is ongoing. Results: 1310 pts (filgrastim=67, pegfilgrastim=665, placebo=578) were analyzed. In studies comparing pegfilgrastim (n=74) and filgrastim (n==7) in pts with AML and NHL, 52% were female, and the mean (SD) age was 50 (15.1) years. Similar proportions (CI) of pts reported bone pain (24.3% [16.1, 35.7] vs 25.4% [15.5, 37.5], respectively), and grade 3/4 bone pain was reported in 3% [0.3, 9] versus 0% [-, -] of pts, respectively. Studies comparing pegfilgrastim (n=591) and placebo (n=578) pts in breast and colorectal cancer are below ( Table ). Conclusions: Bone pain of any grade was commonly reported in all 3 groups (pegfilgrastim, filgrastim, and placebo) and was marginally higher in pts receiving pegfilgrastim compared with placebo. Bone pain was most common in cycle 1. Severe bone pain was infrequently reported. Bone pain was similar in pts receiving pegfilgrastim and filgrastim. Chemotherapy (eg, taxanes) may also contribute to bone pain. [Table: see text] [Table: see text]

Strategies for obtaining reliable results are increasingly implemented in order to reduce errors in the analysis of human and veterinary samples; however, further data are required for murine samples. Here, we determined an average factor from the murine body surface area for the calculation of biochemical renal parameters, assessed the effects of storage and freeze-thawing of C57BL/6 mouse samples on plasmatic and urinary urea, and evaluated the effects of using two different urea-measurement techniques. After obtaining 24 h urine samples, blood was collected, and body weight and length were established. The samples were evaluated after collection or stored at −20°C and −70°C. At different time points (0, 4, and 90 days), these samples were thawed, the creatinine and/or urea concentrations were analyzed, and samples were restored at these temperatures for further measurements. We show that creatinine clearance measurements should be adjusted according to the body surface area, which was calculated based on the weight and length of the animal. Repeated freeze-thawing cycles negatively affected the urea concentration; the urea concentration was more reproducible when using the modified Berthelot reaction rather than the ultraviolet method. Our findings will facilitate standardization and optimization of methodology as well as understanding of renal and other biochemical data obtained from mice.
