We investigated the anti-inflammatory activity ofSenecio salignus. This medicinal plant is often used in Mexico for the treatment of fever and rheumatism. Chloroform and methanol extracts of the plant were tested on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate- (TPA-) induced edema in mice ears. The methanol extract of the plant inhibited edema by36±4.4% compared with the control, while the chloroform extract exhibited an even greater level of inhibition (64.1%). The chloroform extract was then fractionated, and the composition of the active fraction was determined by GC-MS. The anti-inflammatory activity of this fraction was then tested on TPA-induced ear edema in mice, and we found that the active fraction could inhibit edema by 46.9%. The anti-inflammatory effect of the fraction was also tested on carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats at doses of 100 mg/kg; a58.9±2.8% reduction of the edema was observed 4 h after administration of carrageenan, and the effect was maintained for 5 h.

Nowadays, there is a growing interest in the development of medicinal plant-based therapies to diminish the ravages of the inflammatory process related to diseases and tissue damage. Most therapeutic effects of these traditional medicinal plants are owed to their phenolic and antioxidant properties. C. aconitifolius is a traditional medicinal plant in Mexico. Previous characterization reports have stated its high nutritional and antioxidant components. The present study aimed to better understand the biological activity of C. aconitifolius in inflammation response. We developed an ethyl acetate extract of this plant to evaluate its anti-inflammatory capacity and its flavonoid content. The topical anti-inflammatory effect of the ethyl acetate extract of C. aconitifolius was determined by the croton oil-induced mouse ear edema test, while flavonoid detection and concentration were determined by thin layer chromatography and the aluminum chloride colorimetric assay, respectively. Topical application of the extract showed significant inhibition of the induced-ear edema (23.52 and 49.41% for 25 and 50 mg/kg dose, respectively). The extract also exhibited the presence of flavonoids. The finding of the anti-inflammatory activity exerted by the C. aconitifolius and the identification of its active principles may suggest and support its use for inflammation treatment.

The present study was intended to evaluate Anti-inflammatory activity ofC. rottleriextracts (Hydroalcoholic, Methanol, Ethyl acetate and Hexane). The Anti-inflammatory activity ofC.rottleriextracts at doses of 125mg/kg, 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg using carrageenan induced rat paw edema model compared with standard drug (Indomethacin). The selected plant extracts significantly inhibited paw edema along with the standard drug Indomethacin. Of all extracts, methanol extract produced significant effect on reduction of increased paw thickness, hydro alcoholic and ethyl acetate extracts produced moderate percentage inhibition and hexane extract produced low level of percentage inhibition in reducing paw edema on carrageenan induced rats. In all extracts, methanol extract at a dose of 500mg/kg showed more percentage inhibition i.e . 53.47±2.19. From the results obtained during the study it is concluded thatC. rottlerihaving the bioactive molecule responsible for Anti-inflammatory activity by individually or by combination of different bio-active compounds present in it. Further is necessary for isolation and characterization of bioactive molecules which are responsible for the selected plant biological activities.

In order to find new topical anti-inflammatory agents, we had recourse to a medicinal plant. This work was designed to determine the topical anti-inflammatory effect ofPistacia lentiscusfruit oil (PLFO), using carrageenan-induced paw edema rat model, and to evaluate its effects on oxidative stress. The topical anti-inflammatory activity of PLFO was compared to Inflocine® and estimated by measuring the diameter of paw edema, for 5 hours at a 1-hour interval. After that the rats were scarified and the inflamed paw tissue was removed for the exploration of some parameters of oxidative stress and histopathology. PLFO showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity in comparison with the Inflocine. The percentages of edema inhibition were 70% and % 51.5% (p<0.01), respectively, after five hours. The treatment with PLFO and Inflocine led to significant increases (p≤0.05) in the activities of CAT, SOD, and GPX and significant decreases in the MDA level and AOPP activity in the paw tissue after Carr injection, in comparison with the Carr group. Therefore, our findings demonstrate that PLFO might accelerate the development of new drugs which could be used scientifically as a source for natural health products in the treatment of topical inflammation.

Objective: Sarcostemma brunonianum Wight and Arn is a potential medicinal plant belonging to Asclepiadaceae. Bioactive constituents of the plant support the application of treating various ailments in the traditional system of medicine. The study aims to determine the presence of various phytoconstituents in stem, root, and flowers. Methods: Hot percolation method was carried out to obtain crude extracts using different solvent systems from low polar-high polar solvents ranging from petroleum ether, chloroform, (mid-polar) ethyl acetate, methanol and water. Estimation of total phenols, tannins and In vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated for the determination of potential pharmaceutical drugs. Results: The results revealed the presence of some phytoconstituents such as phenols, tannins, glycosides, gums and mucilages. Ascorbic acid, BSA, Rutin and Gallic acid were used as the reference standard. The total phenolic content was found to be high in stem methanol extract 440.84±69.99 mg/g Gallic acid equivalent, whereas the tannin content was 291.78±4.68 mg/g GAE. The result proves that the S. brunonianum stem methanol extract possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities when compared to reference standards. In vitro, Nitric oxide scavenging activity of stem showed a maximum % of inhibition in methanol stem extract (24.39µg/ml) and anti-inflammatory activity maximum inhibition was found to be (55.56 %) in stem methanol and flower(53.62 %). The IC50 (concentration required for 50% inhibition) was also calculated for the DPPH radical model. Conclusion: This study results proclaims and justifies the role of folklore medicinal plant S. brunonianum in the treatment of inflammatory-related ailments and can be recommended for an effective drug.

In the last decade, high cariesprophylactic efficacy of ammonium hexafluorosilicates, including salts with substituted biologically active ammonium cations, has been demonstrated. Among the promising anti-caries agents are recently synthesized 2-, 3-, 4-carboxymethylpyridinium hexafluorosilicates, for whose cations anti-inflammatory activity is expected. The aim of the work is to assess the presence of anti-inflammatory activity in the series of 2-, 3-, 4-carboxymethylpyridinium hexafluorosilicates in the experiment. 2-, 3-, 4-Carboxymethylpyridinium hexafluorosilicates (I–III, respectively) were synthesized according to the previously proposed technique, carrageenan is a commercial preparation, reference drug is a indomethacin. Experiments on the anti-inflammatory activity of hexafluorosilicates were performed on 77 white Wistar male rats weighing 174–190 g using the carrageenan model of inflammation. The inflammatory reaction was reproduced by subplantary administration of 0.1 ml of a 0.2% solution of carrageenan, the studied compounds were administered orally in doses 1/10, 1/20, 1/50 from LD50 for the compound III. It was established that after administration of carrageenan, animals of the control group showed marked paw edema, which gradually increased and was maximal after 24 hours of observation. According to the data obtained, the indices for compounds I-III practically do not differ from those of the control group. This indicates that, despite the results of the PASS forecast and the presence of acetic acid residue, an anti-inflammatory pharmacofor, in compounds I-III, the compounds under study do not have an anti-inflammatory effect in the carrageenan model. 2-, 3-, 4-Carboxymethylpyridinium hexafluorosilicates do not show the expected anti-inflammatory activity in the carrageenan model of inflammation.

A series of Etodolac hydrazone derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity by using egg white induced paw edema method. All the synthesized target compounds were characterized by CHN- microanalysis, FT-IR spectroscopy and 1HNMR analysis. The synthesized target compounds (P1-P3) were found to be active in reducing paw edema thickness and their anti-inflammatory effect was comparable to that of the standard (Etodolac). Biofarmasi J Nat Prod Biochem 18: 42-56. Zehneria scarba (L.f.) Sond is one of the medicinal plants used in folkloric medicine of Ethiopia for years to treat various inflammatory disorders. The present study was aimed to validate the anti-inflammatory activity of crude 70% ethanol leaves extract (70EE) against a sub-acute model and further evaluate the solvent fractions (AF, BF, and CF) in an acute (carrageenan-induced paw edema), sub-acute (formaldehyde induced arthritis) and chronic (cotton pellet induced granuloma) inflammatory models. The 70EE was first prepared by maceration, and the fractions were obtained by sequential partitioning with chloroform and n-butanol from the aqueous suspension of crude 70EE. The test groups, then, received 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg of the crude 70EE or the fractions (AF, BF, and CF) at the same dose levels, whereas positive controls received aspirin (200mg/kg) or dexamethasone (0.5mg/kg) and negative controls received vehicle (2% tween 80 or distilled water, 10 mL/kg). All tested doses of the crude 70EE showed significant inhibition of formaldehyde induced arthritis at the 10th day of treatment, on which the 400mg/kg dose showed the maximum anti-arthritic effect (%A = 60.5; p < 0.001). In the carrageenan-induced paw edema, all the three fractions showed a statistically significant effect, in fact, with different onset and magnitude. In this model, the AF was found to be the most active fraction, and the 400mg/kg dose demonstrated the maximum effect (%A = 76.25; p < 0.001) at 5h post-induction, which is much better than the effect of aspirin at the dose employed. The overall order of efficacy in inhibiting the exudative component of carrageenan-induced paw edema was found to be AF> BF> CF. The AF was also found to be the most active fraction in inhibiting the exudative component of chronic inflammation in the cotton pellet induced granuloma model, where the maximum effect (%A = 43.10, p < 0.001) was exhibited by a dose of 400mg/kg. The AF was also the most active fraction in inhibiting formaldehyde induced arthritis, in which the BF and CF relatively showed a comparable effect throughout day 4-10. On the contrary, in the cotton pellet induced granuloma model, the CF was found to be the most active fraction in inhibiting the proliferative and granulomatous component of chronic inflammation, and the overall order of effectiveness was found to be CF> AF> BF. Besides, 400mg/kg of CF demonstrated the maximum inhibition of granuloma formation (%A = 55.52; P < 0.001). The phytochemical analysis revealed the differential distribution of secondary metabolites into the three fractions, which either singly or in concert appeared to be responsible for the observed effects. The data obtained from the present study collectively indicate that the extract and fractions of leaves of Z.scabra possessed a significant anti-inflammatory activity, upholding the folkloric use of the plant.

Objective: In the current research, to determine the stem extract of Meliosma simplicifolia (L.) for total phenol, tannin, total flavonoid, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory and identify the phytoconstituents utilizing GC-MS and FT-IR. Methods: The ability of the plant extract to act as hydrogen/electrons donor or scavenger of radicals was determined by in vitro antioxidant assays using 2,2-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH) scavenging, reducing power assay, superoxide radical (O2•) scavenging activity. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using carrageenan and formalin-induced paw edema models using Wistar albino rats. The GC-MS and FT-IR analysis of the methanolic stem extract of M. simplicifolia was revealed the presence of phytochemicals. Results: Quantitative studies of estimated phenol, flavonoid and tannin, as for the methanol extract of stem showed the highest content of phenolic compounds (39.83±3.62GAE mg/100). Antioxidant activities were concluded the estimation M. simplicifolia stem for as followed the studies. In stem the methanol extract showed the highest DPPH scavenging activity (124.3µg/ml). The anti-inflammatory activity has shown in high doses of methanolic extract 250 mg/kg of significant value (p<0.05) inhibition of paw edema, on 6th hour, respectively. The FT-IR analysis has confirmed their characteristic peak values and functional groups. Conclusion: M. simplicifolia has an effective of anti-inflammatory activity and constitutes a potential source for the development of new treatments.

Five extracts (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water) of Scutellaria rivularis Benth. were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and compared with indomethacin. The result indicated that chloroform extract proved to be the most effective in all of the extracts. Consequently, three major components (baicalin, baicalein and wogonin) of the chloroform extract were further tested for their anti-inflammatory activity using the same model. It was found that baicalin exhibits the greatest inhibition activity against carrageenan-induced rat paw edema.

Background:<em> Anthocephalus cadamba </em>(Rebox)Miq. (Rubiaceae) is widely distributed throughout the greater part of India, especially at low levels in wet place. Traditionally the bark is used as tonic, febrifuge and to reduce the pain and inflammation. The anti-inflammatory effect of methanol extract obtained from <span style="font-style: italic;"> Anthocephalus cadamba </span> aerial parts, MEAC, were investigated in this study. Design and methods: The effects of MEAC on the acute and chronic phases of inflammation were studied in carrageenan, dextran and mediators (histamine and serotonin) induced paw edema and cotton pallet-induced granuloma, respectively. The anti-edema effect of MEAC was compared with 10 mg/kg of indomethacin orally. Results: The results suggested that MEAC possess potent anti-inflammatory activity. The acute inflammatory model showed that all the doses of MEAC effectively suppressed the edema produced by histamine, so it may be suggested that its anti-inflammatory activity is possibly backed by its antihistaminic activity. In chronic inflammatory model the effect may be due to the cellular migration to injured sites and accumulation of collagen and mucopolysaccharide. Conclusions: On the basis of these findings, it may be inferred that <span style="font-style: italic;"> Anthocephalus cadamba </span> is an anti-inflammatory agent and the results are in agreement with its traditional use.
