The history of complete denture impression procedures has been influenced largely by the development of impression materials from which new techniques and ideas arose. The purpose of this study was to compare the retention of complete dentures made by using different impression techniques like conventional, admixed, all green, and functional techniques. The results showed that there was significant difference in retention between the six techniques where functional technique showed the highest mean value of retention followed by elastomeric, all green, and admixed, while cocktail and green stick compound showed the lowest mean value. However, on clinical examination, the retention produced by the six techniques was satisfactory.

A case of steroid-induced osteoporosis-related multiple fractures and dislocations are described after a seizure is reported. Patient had two years history of steroid use with no supplement or antiresorptive therapy. There was a delay in the diagnosis which affected an otherwise good outcome in such situations. It is recommended that patients on steroid should be given calcium, vitamin D, and an antiresorptive. Furthermore, a meticulous clinical examination is required in patients who are on steroids and suffer epileptic seizures to rule out skeletal injury.

The aim of this study was to report the outcome of the use of an external fixator to treat a pelvic canal stenosis in a 5-month-old female cat. The cat was referred with a history of 3 weeks of intermittent signs of constipation refractory to the medical management, occurring after surgical treatment for a bilateral sacroiliac luxation and sacral fracture. The clinical examination revealed instability of the pelvis and a radiograph showed a pelvic canal stenosis and megacolon. External fixator was the method of choice to be used in this case. The manually applied tension on an external fixator resulted in a widening of the pelvic canal. At 45 days after surgery, there were no signs of constipation, and the radiological examination showed progressive bone healing. At 18 months post-op, the cat had no abnormalities both on the clinical examination and on the radiography. In conclusion, the use of an external fixator led to the widening of the pelvic canal using a minimally invasive procedure. To the authors’ knowledge, this case report represents the first surgical description and clinical outcome of the widening of the pelvic canal in cats using an external skeletal fixator.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate maximum bite forces (mBF) in dominant (DS) and non-dominant sides (NDS) at certain time periods after the insertion of new complete dentures based on prior experience and gender.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 88 patients, complete denture wearers (CDWs), were examined. The maximum bite force at the intercuspal position between the first molars in 3 seconds was registered and recorded with piezoelectric gnathodynamometer. The procedure was repeated 3 times in identical conditions, with relaxation intervals of 1 minute between repeats and the limiting factor was the subjective feeling of pain. Testing of parametric data was performed with One Way Repeated Measurement of ANOVA test.RESULTS: The average mBF values increased during the observational period, both on the DS and NDS, with significant difference in DS, which was greater. The analysis of one-factor variance showed that there were differences of average mBF values in DS and NDS during six consecutive measurements (mBF–DS = 11.3, p = 0.0001, and mBF-NDS = 2.26, p = 0.047). Significant changes in the masticatory force (mBF) on the DS and NDS is explained by different measurement times and with the prior experience with complete dentures, BF–DS = 11.76, p = 0.0000; mBF–NDS = 2.42, p = 0.0351; mBFe–DS = 40.48; P = 0.0000 mBFe–NDS = 39.93, p = 0.0000.CONCLUSION: mBF represents a significant discriminating variable of the level of functional adaptation of new complete denture wearers (nCDWs) about the initial measurements.

Concurrent lymphosarcoma and salmonellosis in a 12-year-old female neutered domestic shorthair cat in Grenada is described. Clinically, the cat was emaciated, and had a history of vomiting and diarrhea of two months duration. Clinical examination revealed a large palpable mass in the craniodorsal abdomen and fluid in the thoracic cavity. Gross lesions consisted of moderate pyothorax and pyoabdomen with variably-sized, single to multiple, soft, white masses in the mesentery adjacent to the pancreas, on the serosal surface of the stomach, and on the quadrate lobe of the liver. Histopathological findings associated with these masses were compatible with lymphosarcoma. Sheets of neoplastic round cells, some with intracytoplasmic eosinophilic granules, were found in the masses associated with the omentum, stomach, and liver. Salmonella enteritidis was isolated in pure culture from the thoracic fluid, collected during clinical examination, and mesenteric mass, collected during necropsy, and both isolates showed similar antimicrobial susceptibility patterns.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a progressing bloat condition in dogs characterized as dilatation followed by rotation of stomach. A sevenyear old 18 kg black colour female non-descriptive dog presented, with history of difficulty in respiration within half an hour after feeding of curd meals. With the history and general clinical examination the case tentatively diagnosed as gastric dilatation. After unsuccessful advancement of oro-gastric tube, needle gastric paracentesis was performed on left side of the abdomen caudal to the last rib for decompression. Mid-ventral celiotomy and gastrotomy were performed after stabilization of heart rate and respiratory rate. After evacuating the whitish frothy content from the stomach, derotation and incisional gastropexy was performed. On 14thpostoperative day telecommunication confirmed the milk based meal induced GDV canine patient recovered uneventfully. Electrocardiogram monitoring done for first 24 hours period and ventricular arrhythmia was managed by using lidocaine (loading@2mg/ kg bw followed by 25mcg/kg/min for 30 min). It is concluded that on 14th postoperative day telecommunication confirmed the milk based meal induced GDV canine patient recovered uneventfully.

Objective The aim of this study was to detect the arginase Ι (ARG I) enzyme in asthma patients, clarify its role, in addition to examining the relationship of this enzyme with bronchial asthma. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 100 patients from the Department of Medicine in Rizgary Hospital in Erbil City, in addition to intact 100 volunteers; the introduced questionnaire was filled out on the basis of type-induced asthma, duration of the disease, age of the patients, gender, family history, and allergy condition, Serum was separated to perform Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in Medical Research Center to examine the association of ARGΙ with bronchial asthma. By ARG activity we can measure the conversion of arginine to ornithine and urea. By using a quantitative colorimetric assay at 490 nm, employing a QuantiChrom arginase assay kit (Bioassay Systems). Results: Our results depicted the association between ARGΙ and bronchial asthma: based on their age, significant elevation of serum arginase level was observed in the patients with ≥81 years old, which mean value (100.16±19.77c), p-value (0.000); also the duration of asthma ≥20 years (82.48±38.81c) , p-value (0.01) were remarkably affected; this sign was found in those with types of induced asthma and with allergy condition. But the non- significant difference in the frequency of abnormal serum arginase level was observed in those patients that have a family history of asthma disease and gender of the patients. This finding demonstrated a remarkable association of ARG Ι in the development of asthma at p ˂ 0.05.

ABSTRACT Objectives A combination of the neutral zone and the polished surface impression techniques is a useful method to reserve the functional and physiological forms of the underlying mandibular residual ridge by enhancing both retention and stability in Malaysian geriatric patients (2-year clinical study). Materials and methods A total of 25 Malaysian geriatric patients have participated in the current study. Two sets of dentures were served to the patients. The first set was constructed according the conventional method of complete denture construction whereas the second set was constructed by using neutral zone and polished surface impression techniques. Results The patients were followed up for 2 years and the obtained results showed that all patients have stopped using the conventional dentures and continued with the test dentures. The comparative analysis exhibited significant difference (p < 0.05) in favor of test dentures. Conclusion Combination of the neutral zone and the polished surface techniques can impart a physiological reservation to the underlying residual ridge without changes. Statement of problem It is common for completely edentulous geriatric patients to have resorbed mandibular residual ridge because of the process of aging. Some surgical interactions are contraindicated for this age group of patients, so, neutral zone technique and/or polished surface impression verified effective in improving stability for lower complete dentures. In spite of the fact that the above mentioned methods often used to enhance stability of complete denture, most of the studies were relying on only one of those methods to improve stability rather than retention. Researcher hypothesis stated that a combination of the neutral zone and the polished surface impression techniques should be performed together to enhance both stability and retention and henceforth reservation of the residual ridge under mandibular complete dentures issued to the patients with a constant follow-up for two consecutive years. Pesticide is used in agriculture, but their non-competent usage can cause adverse effect on people and animals. There are numerous clinical states and symptoms which can give clinical image similiar to pesticide poisoning, with vagal symptoms as a vertigo, weariness, nausea, vomiting, headache, pain in abdomen and musles. That is why diagnosis of accidental pesticide poisoning is difficult. The base for establishing of diagnosis is information that the person was in contact with pesticide, confirmed by laboratory and toxicological analysis. In some cases pesticide poisoning can not be proved by laboratory methods. In these cases history of disease and clinical examination can help in establishing of diagnosis.
