The joints have great influence on the strength of jointed rock mass and lead to the multiscale, nonhomogeneous, and anisotropic characteristics. In order to consider these effects, a new model based on a genetic algorithm is proposed for locating the critical slip surface (CSS) in jointed rock mass slope (JRMS) from its stress field. A finite element method (FEM) was employed to analyze the stress field. A method of calculating the mechanical persistence ratio (MPR) was used. The calculated multiscale and anisotropic characteristics of the MPR were used in the fitness function of genetic algorithm (GA) to calculate the factor of safety. The GA was used to solve optimization problems of JRMS stability. Some numerical examples were given. The results show that the multiscale and anisotropic characteristics of the MPR played an important role in locating the CSS in JRMS. The proposed model calculated the CSS and the factor of safety of the slope with satisfactory precision.

Joints often have important effects on seepage and elastic properties of jointed rock mass and therefore on the rock slope stability. In the present paper, a model for discrete jointed network is established using contact-free measurement technique and geometrical statistic method. A coupled mathematical model for characterizing anisotropic permeability tensor and stress tensor was presented and finally introduced to a finite element model. A case study of roadway stability at the Heishan Metal Mine in Hebei Province, China, was performed to investigate the influence of joints orientation on the anisotropic properties of seepage and elasticity of the surrounding rock mass around roadways in underground mining. In this work, the influence of the principal direction of the mechanical properties of the rock mass on associated stress field, seepage field, and damage zone of the surrounding rock mass was numerically studied. The numerical simulations indicate that flow velocity, water pressure, and stress field are greatly dependent on the principal direction of joint planes. It is found that the principal direction of joints is the most important factor controlling the failure mode of the surrounding rock mass around roadways.

Most procedures for determining the critical slip surface in slope-stability analysis rely on traditional nonlinear optimization techniques. The main shortcoming of these techniques is the uncertainty as to robustness of the algorithms to locate the global minimum factor of safety rather than the local minimum factor of safety for complicated and nonhomogeneous geological subsoil conditions. This paper describes the incorporation of a genetic algorithm methodology for determining the critical slip surface in multiple-wedge stability analysis. This search strategy is becoming increasingly popular in engineering optimization problems because it has been shown in a wide variety of problems to be suitably robust for the search not to become trapped in local optima. Three examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the genetic algorithm approach. The search strategy was found to be sufficiently robust to handle layered soils with weak, thin layers, and as efficient and accurate as the conventional pattern search method.Key words: critical slip surface, factor of safety, genetic algorithms, optimization, slope stability, wedge analysis.

Currently, the safety evaluation of gravity dam concentrates on stress and anti-sliding stability of the dam. A lot of research shows that the upper area of the dam is one of the whole dams weakest areas during an earthquake and should be studied in details. In this study, the genetic algorithm and non-linear FEM analysis are combined, then a search program is written to search the critical slip surface in the dams upper area. Finally, the surface which has the least anti-sliding stability coefficient is obtained, the most dangerous slip surface and its anti-sliding coefficient as well as the corresponding time are acquired to evaluate the safety of the dam.

The factors affecting the TBM tunnel behavior in jointed rock mass is investigated. In the numerical models the concrete segment lining of TBM tunnel is concerned, which is simulated as a tube neglecting the segment joint. And the TBM tunnel construction process is simulate considering the excavation and installing of the segment linings. Some cases are analyzed with different joint orientation, joint spacing, joint strength and tunnel depth. The results show that the shape and areas of loosing zones of the tunnel are influenced by the parameters of joint sets and in-situ stress significantly, such as dip angle, spacing, strength, and the in-situ stress statement. And the stress and deformation of the tunnel lining are influenced by the parameters of joint sets and in-situ stress, too.
