A new series of novel triazolothiadiazepinylindole analogues were synthesized with an aim to examine possible antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The titled compounds (3a–z) were obtained in good yield by reacting 5-(5-substituted-3-phenyl-1H-indol-2-yl)-4-amino-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiols1a–cwith 3-(2,5-disubstituted-1H-indol-3-yl)-1(4-substituted phenyl)prop-2-en-1-ones2a–i. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by IR,1H NMR, mass spectroscopic and analytical data. The synthesized analogues were tested for antioxidant and antimicrobial potency. Among the tested compounds3a–cand3j–lhave shown very promising free radical scavenging activity and total antioxidant capacity. Compounds3d–f,3m–o, and3s–zhave shown excellent ferric reducing antioxidant activity. An outstanding antimicrobial activity is observed with compounds3a–cand3j–l.

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological and chemical activity on two species of fungi of the genus Penicillium isolated from wastewater. On the selected species of fungi the different antioxidant activity assays were carried out: DPPH free-radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity, Fe2+- chelating ability and Fe3+- reducing power. Total phenol content was also determinate for ethanolic extract of mycelia. Penicillium chrysogenum ethanolic extract contained higher total phenolic content and better total antioxidant capacity as well as ferrous ion chelating ability. Penicillium fumiculosum ethanolic extract showed higher DPPH free-radical scavenging activity, as well as reducing power. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that two types of fungi are potential new sources of natural antioxidants.

The phytochemical contents of Salvia virgata mericarps and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of its ethanol extract were studied for the first time. S. virgata mericarps were collected in the province of Trabzon, Turkey. Chemical analyses were performed using chromatographic methods. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant potential were measured using Folin-Ciocalteu, Al(NO3)3, and DPPH radical scavenging activity methods, respectively. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the microdilution method for all the tested bacterial and fungal strains, with the exception of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for which the resazurin microtiter plate method was applied. The mericarps were rich in glutamic acid (3934 mg/100 g), potassium (12578.8 ?g/g), calcium (12092.0 ?g/g), and dietary fibers (35.565 g/100 g). The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were 2.50 ?g GAE/mg extract and 0.34 ?g QE/mg extract, respectively. The most effective DPPH free radical scavenging activity determined for the highest applied concentration was 92.44%. The ethanol extract obtained from the mericarps was found to be as effective as the reference drug ampicillin (MIC value = 125 ?g/mL) against the nosocomial pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii. In conclusion, S. virgata mericarps provide good nutritional value with low amounts of carbohydrates and high dietary fibers, amino acids, minerals and total phenolic and flavonoid contents and medicinal properties.

In this study, total polyphenols content (TPC) and ascorbic acid content (AAC) in CAW were quantified. Total antioxidant activity, reducing capacity, and free radical scavenging activity of CAW were assayed. The TPC and AAC were 160 mg GAE /100ml and 132 mg/100 ml,respectivity. CAW exhibited effective antioxidant activities in the employed in vitro experiments, including total antioxidant activity, reducing capacity, and free radical scavenging activity, which indicates that phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid may play a key role in the antioxidant function of CAW.

We described the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ethanol, acetone, and water extracts of beet root pomace. Total contents of phenolics (316.30&ndash;564.50 mg GAE/g of dry extract), flavonoids (316.30&ndash;564.50&nbsp;mg RE/g of dry extract), betacyanins (18.78&ndash;24.18 mg/g of dry extract), and betaxanthins (11.19&ndash;22.90 mg/g of dry extract) after solid-phase extraction were determined spectrophotometrically. The antioxidant activity was determined by measuring the reducing power and DPPH scavenging activity by spectrometric metod, and hydroxyl and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity by ESR spectroscopy. In general, the reducing power of all the beet root pomace extracts increased with increasing concentrations. The DPPH-free radical scavenging activity of the extracts, expressed as EC<sub>50</sub>, ranged from 0.133 mg/ml to 0.275 mg/ml. Significant correlation was observed between all phytochemical components and scavenging activity. 0.5 mg/ml of ethanol extract completely eliminated hydroxyl radical, which had been generated in Fenton system, while the same concentration of this extract scavenged 75% of superoxide anion radicals. In antibacterial tests, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus showed higher susceptibility than Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Aims: The present study evaluates the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the crude dichloromethane (CDCME), ethyl acetate (CEAE), and methanol (CMeE) extracts from the plant Oldenlandia corymbosa L. Background:Oldenlandia species have been popular among the people of the Indian subcontinent to treat several types of internal and external inflammation for a long time. Plant decoctions have been used to battle inflammation in cases of tonsilitis, pneumonia and cholecystitis, among others. Objective: The present work designed to demonstrate the properties of the previously mentioned plant extracts to prevent inflammation both in vivo and in vitro. This work is the first investigation of such extracts from this species and their relationship with anti-inflammatory activity. Method: The anti-inflammatory properties of the Oldenlandia corymbosa L. extracts were evaluated in vitro with the Red Blood Cell (RBC) membrane stabilization method and the protein denaturation method and in vivo with the carrageenan-induced paw oedema method. Furthermore, the free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was carried out with the 1,1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical oxidation, total antioxidant capacity and iron reduction assay. Result: Both in vivo and in vitro studies showed that CDCME had the most predominant effects with the value of 80.5% for RBC membrane stabilization, 60% for inhibition of protein denaturation at the concentration of 1000 µg/mL and 63.28% (after 3 h, * p < 0.05) for inhibition of paw oedema (300 mg/kg bwt) compared to carrageenan-induced mice. The free radical scavenging activity was studied by DPPH, total antioxidant and reducing activity assay. CDCME showed scavenging activity in all the methods and an IC50 value of 473.86 µg/mL for DPPH method. Conclusions: The findings of the study remarked that CDCME of the plant has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that validate the traditional use of the plant to get remedy from pain. Other: The plants Oldenlandiacorymbosa Linn were provided by the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Laboratory campus, Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Experiments on animals were conducted by ethical permission of Institute of Biological Sciences, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh (license no: 225/320-IAMEBBC/IBSc).

A series of epicatechin derivatives, including 3-O-palmitoyl epicatechin, 3-O-myristoyl epicatechin, 3-O-lauroyl epicatechin, 3-O-decanoyl epicatechin and 3-O-octanoyl epicatechin, were prepared by the acylation method. Structures of these prepared products were characterized by LC/MS and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Their antioxidant activity were assessed by the methods of DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging. The results showed that aliphatic acyl epicatechin derivatives with varying aliphatic groups were synthesized by this method. The antioxidant activity of aliphatic acyl epicatechin derivatives were better than the oil-soluble tea polyphenol and BHT, equal to TBHQ.

Abstract Opuntia stricta Haw. is considered as one of the most common cactus plant growing in Tunisia. Extracting valuable compounds from its fruit peel, considered as by-product, is drawing more and more attention, making it on the verge of commercialization. Water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted from Opuntia stricta Haw. peels, and their chemical composition assessed using thin layer chromatography. The antioxidant activities of the extracted polysaccharides were assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant activity and reducing power capacity. The extraction yield of water-soluble polysaccharides was 7.53±0.86%. The chemical composition revealed the presence of rhamnose, arabinose, glucose, mannose, galactose and galacturonic acid. The infra-red spectroscopic analysis showed a similar structure to that of Opuntia ficus-indica polysaccharide peels. Additionally, the extracted polysaccharides exhibited high antioxidant activities. In fact, the free radical scavenging activity (half inhibition concentration = 6.5 mg ml−1 with 94.9% inhibition at 50 mg ml−1), the total antioxidant activity (100 μg ascorbic acid equivalent at 50 mg polysaccharides) and the reducing power capacity (absorbance 700 nm = 0.7 at 50 mg ml−1), appeared to be interesting compared to natural and synthetic antioxidants. Therefore, water-soluble polysaccharides from Opuntia stricta Haw. fruit peels could be a natural alternative to replace synthetic antioxidants.
