This paper presents a low-cost and energy-saving urban mobility monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The primary components of the proposed sensor unit are a Bluetooth sensor and a Zigbee transceiver. Within the WSN, the Bluetooth sensor captures the MAC addresses of Bluetooth units equipped in mobile devices and car navigation systems. The Zigbee transceiver transmits the collected MAC addresses to a data center without any major communications infrastructures (e.g., fiber optics and 3G/4G network). A total of seven prototype sensor units have been deployed on roadway segments in Newark, New Jersey, for a proof of concept (POC) test. The results of the POC test show that the performance of the proposed sensor unit appears promising, resulting in 2% of data drop rates and an improved Bluetooth capturing rate.

The post-disaster road monitoring system provides an interesting application area for wireless sensor networks. After the earthquake, roads are subject to be blocked by landslides. The people require a scalable and low-cost technology for getting real-time dynamic data about road available because aftershocks occur continuously. Wireless sensor networks are a promising candidate to fulfill these requirements. Then the post-disaster road monitoring system solution is put forward. In this system, the ordered arrangement of node number greatly reduces the complexity of node location and provides the premise and guarantee for designing efficient route algorithm for the system. The algorithms of route established and route forwarding are designed for the arrangement and transmission characteristics of nodes, then are more efficient than general-purpose route protocol.

Temperature signal is one of the key parameters in industrial processes. Accurate and effective temperature monitoring may provide necessary device information to the operator and prevent unexpected catastrophic equipment faults due to device overheat. Compared with wired monitoring system, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) monitoring system has many advantages, such as low cost and convenient installation. This paper proposes and implements a multichannel temperature monitoring system based on WSNs module, Jennic JN5139. The hardware circuit design of the sensor node and the software design for WSNs nodes and the centralized computer using C language and LabVIEW respectively are given in detailed. An optimization subsection algorithm based on least square for thermocouple nonlinear calibration is also explored to increase the measurement accuracy. The prototype system is evaluated with an electric furnace temperature monitoring system. The experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system.

In traditional airplane monitoring system (AMS), data sensed from strain, vibration, ultrasound of structures or temperature, and humidity in cabin environment are transmitted to central data repository via wires. However, drawbacks still exist in wired AMS such as expensive installation and maintenance, and complicated wired connections. In recent years, accumulating interest has been drawn to performing AMS via airborne wireless sensor network (AWSN) system with the advantages of flexibility, low cost, and easy deployment. In this review, we present an overview of AMS and AWSN and demonstrate the requirements of AWSN for AMS particularly. Furthermore, existing wireless hardware prototypes and network communication schemes of AWSN are investigated according to these requirements. This paper will improve the understanding of how the AWSN design under AMS acquires sensor data accurately and carries out network communication efficiently, providing insights into prognostics and health management (PHM) for AMS in future.

Tower cranes are widely used in the course of construction machinery and equipment. In this system, tower cranes work more safely and stably, and the controlling system becomes more accurate, which is very vital to improve efficieney, aviod accidents and analyze fault. With the rapid growth and population of the wireless network technology, ZigBee wireless network technology by virtue of their low rate, low power consumption and low cost, has been widely applied in the fields of wireless sensor networks and automatic control. The real-time condition monitoring system of tower cranes based on wireless sensor network is studied in this paper.

Energy consumption is a main area in wireless sensor network researching. Interior monitoring system is designed by organized ZigBee wireless network. Address assignment mechanism is put forward and the result about sensor nodes is displayed. Aiming at the problems of LEACH algorithm that all nodes will be assigned cluster head, this paper proposes the algorithm that cluster head projected in first every round is effective until the next round so that reducing energy consumption in competition about cluster head. Through the simulation test, network address assignment is normal, data can be displayed through LED, and network telecommunication is stable.
