This work presents the dynamic response of a pavement plate resting on a soil whose inertia is taken into account in the design of pavements by rational methods. Thus, the pavement is modeled as a thin plate with finite dimensions, supported longitudinally by dowels and laterally by tie bars. The subgrade is modeled via Pasternak-Vlasov type (three-parameter type) foundation models and the moving traffic load is expressed as a concentrated dynamic load of harmonically varying magnitude, moving straight along the plate with a constant acceleration. The governing equation of the problem is solved using the modified Bolotin method for determining the natural frequencies and the wavenumbers of the system. The orthogonal properties of eigenfunctions are used to find the general solution of the problem. Considering the load over the center of the plate, the results showed that the deflections of the plate are maximum about the middle of the plate but are not null at its edges. It is therefore observed that the deflection decreased 18.33 percent when the inertia of the soil is taken into account. This result shows the possible economic gain when taking into account the inertia of soil in pavement dynamic design.

The characteristics of four-order elliptical gear is analyzed. The parameters of four-order elliptical gear are chosen and calculated. The three-dimensional solid modeling of four-order elliptical gear is achieved. The dynamic model of four-order elliptical gear is established by finite element method and modal analysis of four-order elliptical gear is investigated. The natural frequencies and major modes of the first six orders are clarified. The method and the result facilitate the dynamic design and dynamic response analysis of high-order elliptical gear.

Sloshing response of liquid in a rigid cylindrical tank with a rigid annual baffle under horizontal sinusoidal loads was studied. The effect of the damping was considered in the analysis. Natural frequencies and modes of the system have been calculated by using the Sub-domain method. The total potential function under horizontal loads is assumed to be the sum of the tank potential function and the liquid perturbed function. The expression of the liquid perturbed function is obtained by introducing the generalized coordinates. Substituting potential functions into the free surface wave conditions, the dynamic response equations including the damping effect are established. The damping ratio is calculated by Maleki method. The liquid potential are obtained by solving the dynamic response equations of the system.

The weak dynamic stiffness of thin plate is one of the important factors that limit the use of thin plate. Improving the dynamic stiffness of thin plate is one of the effective methods for the vibration control of thin plate. In this paper, the influence of pre-stress on the vibration characteristics of thin plate is studied. A vibration control method of thin plate based on pre-stress is proposed. The vibration differential equation of quadrate thin plate under pre-stressing is established. Using the Galerkin principle, the natural frequencies corresponding to the shape functions of the quadrate thin plates under pre-stressing in different distribution forms are obtained. By comparison, it is found that pre-stressing on the thin plate can change the dynamic stiffness of thin plate. In particular, tensile stress can increase the dynamic stiffness of thin plate while compressive stress can reduce the dynamic stiffness of the thin plate. The greater the pre-stress, the more obvious the effect. In the end, the requirements of the pre-stress distribution which can improve the dynamic stiffness of thin plate effectively are derived.

The present paper deals with free vibration of multiple cracked continuous beams with intermediate rigid supports. A simplified method is proposed to obtain general solution of free vibration in cracked beam with intermediate supports that is then used for natural frequency analysis of the beam in dependence upon cracks and support locations. Numerical results show that the support location or ratio of span lengths in combination with cracks makes a significant effect on eigenfrequency spectrum of beam. The discovered effects of support locations on eigenfrequency spectrum of cracked continuous beam are useful for detecting not only cracks but also positions of vanishing deflection on the beam.

Abstract A model to compute average properties for Mindlin plates of rapidly varying thickness was introduced in [SOT93]. The model was designed to be of use in computations of the optimum shape and layout of plates using the technique introduced by Bendsøe and Kikuchi [BEN88]. In this paper we discuss the utilization of the model to determine the optimum layout of plate structures that maximizes a function of the structure’s natural frequencies. A simply supported square plate is used to illustrate the problem of optimization in the presence of repeated natural frequencies. An automotive application is presented to illustrate the usefulness in design practice.

Underground pipeline seepage and traffic load are the important factors causing city road collapse. In this paper, eight groups of indoor scale model experiments are used to study the road collapse caused by pipeline seepage, taking into account the load type, pipeline buried depth, the distance between pipeline and loss channel, the relative position of pipeline and loss channel, and the formation time of loss channel. The results show that when the erosion channel was formed later, the underlying erosion cavity was ellipsoid, while the other erosion cavities were funnel shaped. When only the static load is applied, the time to reach the ultimate failure is longer than that when only dynamic load is applied. The smaller dynamic load can increase the stability of the soil above the seepage pipeline, while the larger dynamic load can accelerate the collapse process. With the formation time of the erosion channel increasing, the erosion void size is larger and the surface is easier to collapse. With the increase of the distance between the loss passage and the pipeline, the damage time of the road surface is also increased. The larger the thickness of the soil layer above the pipeline, the smaller the size of the underground cavity and the surface subsidence.
